Okocha should not have joined Bolton — Ronaldinho

Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho has faulted the decision of former Nigerian captain, Jay-Jay Okocha to have joined Bolton Wanderers in the English Premier League.

Ronaldinho, who was Okocha’s teammate at Paris Saint-Germain, thinks the move to England restrained the full potential of Okocha.

Ronaldinho, who was full of praised for Jay-Jay, said, “Jay Jay Okocha, wow!! That man made football listen to him. At training, we would watch him doing a freestyle; whatever he wanted to do, the ball would do it. But his problem is that he was too keen to move to England.”

Ronaldinho was close to moving to Manchester United but opted out of the deal to join Spanish giants, Barcelona.

According to Ronaldinho, Okocha would have been better off moving to Spain or Italy, where skilled players like him are highly valued.

Ronaldinho said: “In La Liga or Serie A, he would definitely get a chance to play for a big team because they love skilled players over there. In England, you stand no chance of playing for a big team if you’re that skilled. They think it’s not necessary.”

Okocha spent four years at PSG before moving to Bolton in 2002.

The midfield maestrro made 84 appearances for the French side, scoring 12 goals. At Bolton, he made 124 appearances and helped the team qualify for European football for the first time.

Okocha had in an interview with talkSPORT in 2021 admitted himself that his move to Bolton was poorly thought out.

He said, “I will say that it’s obvious that I didn’t really do my research before signing for Bolton. As a football person, football comes first, not the city, not the lifestyle, but one thing that’s clear is that the training ground was different, the attitude towards the games was different.”

Despite knocks for his move to England, Okocha is still widely regarded as the most talented football player to come out of Africa.

My father needs prayers, support from Nigerians – Tinubu’s daughter

Mrs Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, daughter of the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, has urged Nigerians to support and pray for her father in order to govern the country successfully.

Tinubu-Ojo said this at the Ansar-ud-Deen Society of Nigeria (ADSN) 28th annual Ramadan Lecture and Special Prayer for the Nation, held in Abuja, on Saturday.

At the event themed: ‘Ramadan: Islam and Good Governance: the Role of Muslims’, which took place at the ADSN Central Mosque, Maitama, she said her father must succeed for the good of Nigerians.

“I called on Nigerians to pray and support our president-elect to make him succeed in making Nigeria the best for all. He cannot do it alone and Nigerians must support him, even after the elections,” Tinubu-Ojo said.

Speaking on the theme of the lecture, the Chairman, ADSN, Northern States Council of Missioners, Sheikh Muhydeen Ajani Bello, cautioned against frivolity and wastefulness and sought help for the needy to engender societal and national development and wellbeing.

“Those at the helm of affairs must help the needy and those also not at the leadership positions must also help the needy to engender societal and national development,” Bello said.

The renowned Islamic cleric noted that Prophet Muhammad had said that “We should help the needy even if the person asking for help was riding on a horse and you are walking.”

Speaking earlier, Abuja branch chairman of the society, Alhaji Mohammed Kabir Olayiwola, said that helping the needy should not only be in the month of Ramadan.

Super Eagles will redeem image in next game, Iwobi assures

Midfielder Alex Iwobi says the Super Eagles are eager to redeem their image in their reverse fixture against the Wild Dogs of Guinea Bissau on Monday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Super Eagles on Friday lost 0-1 to Guinea Bissau in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.

Iwobi admitted that he and his teammates failed to capitalise on the numerous goalscoring chances they created in the match played at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

He however added that he was confident that they would beat their opponents convincingly in the next game.

“We tried to play as a team and created so many chances in the game. I think Guinea Bissau probably had only about three opportunities if you check the stats.

“So, it is one of those games we want to term as ‘bad luck’. We created so many chances, it just wasn’t for us today (Friday).

“I am sure if we play them again, luck will definitely be on our side and we will beat them convincingly,” Iwobi said.

The Everton Football Club midfielder however pleaded with Nigerians not to relent in their support for the team.

He assured them that they would give their all in the next game to redeem their image and make the country proud.

“First and foremost, as players and the technical crew, we have to react, look at the game and analyse where we need to improve.

“So, the only thing I want to say to our teeming fans is that they should stick by us and support the team as we are ready give a 100 per cent and fight for not just ourselves but the nation.

“Every time we come here to represent the country we fight for so many people and count ourselves privileged and honoured to wear the national colours.

“We assure you all that in our next game, we are going to do our best to make sure we get it right and make our nation proud,” Iwobi said.

NAN reports that the Wild Dogs will play hosts to the Super Eagles in the reverse fixture of the qualifiers in Marrakech, Morocco on Monday.

Guinea Bissau has Morocco as the home venue for now as they do not have a Confederation of African Football (CAF)-approved playing turf.

Guinea Bissau currently top Group A of the 2023 AFCON qualifiers, with seven points from three matches, while Nigeria with six points are in the second position.

The Leone Stars of Sierra Leone are in third position with two points, while Sao Tome and Principe are with one point and sit at the bottom of the log

Messi reaches 800 career goals with Panama free-kick

Lionel Messi has reached a new milestone, scoring his 800th career goal off a free kick against Panama.

The World Champions, Argentina, were in action for the first time since their triumph in Qatar 2022 in the early hours of Friday against Panama.

Coach Lionel Scaloni put out the same line-up that started against France in the FIFA World Cup final, and captain Lionel Messi was on target again to reach a new career landmark.

After a drab first half, the Argentine broke the deadlock in the 78th minute when Leandro Paredes found Thiago Almeida who tucked in the ball neatly.

The PSG star’s strike against Panama was his 800th career goal in his legendary career after scoring his 799th against Nantes in the Ligue 1.

Be hopeful, stolen mandate ‘ll be reclaimed — Dafinone charges Deltans, APC

…Say party leaders are behind Omo-Agege’s quest to recover the APC mandate

The All Progressive Congress, APC Delta Central Senator-Elect, Chief Ede Dafinone, has called on Deltans, APC faithful, supporters and lovers of the Deputy President of the Senate and APC Governorship Candidate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege to be calm as the party and its candidate are making frantic efforts to reclaim the mandate freely given to the APC and Omo-Agege on March 18 polls.

He also debunked insinuations in some sections of the press that there is a crack amongst the leaders of APC in Delta State, noting that the genuine leaders and members of the APC in Delta are solidly behind DSP Omo-Agege in his quests to recover the party’s stolen mandate.

The newly elected Senator speaking on the outcome of the election, noted that against Deltans expectation, the just concluded gubernatorial election in Delta State was marred by irregularities, nevertheless, INEC went ahead to declare the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Sheriff Oborevwori as the winner.

According to him, “the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and our party’s legal team are currently reviewing the overwhelming evidence of massive electoral infractions in at least 20 local government areas allegedly won by the PDP with the aim of sitting outside the fraudulent results and reclaim the mandate given to Omo-Agage by Deltans.

“It’s an open secret that majority of the electorates in Delta are tired of the PDP’s 24 years of bad governance, and they prefer our candidate, DSP Ovie Omo-Agege, to that of the PDP and other candidates and they validated this fact by casting their ballot in Omo-Agege’s favour.

“However, those who were afraid that they would fail due to their irresponsible style of governance in the last eight years orchestrated all manner of illegality in a bid to sway the outcome of the election in their favour by hijacking the electoral process through the help of some compromised INEC staff and stole our mandate.”

Speaking further, the Senator-Elect emphasized that in many places, there were obvious cases of over-voting, results were manually fabricated, entered into the result sheets, and collated as against the content of BVAS accreditation.

Dafinone, however, urged supporters to remain calm stating that the result would be challenged using all legal means, stressing that he is hopeful that the stolen mandate would be reclaimed.

“I want you all to be calm. We are going to reclaim the stolen mandate. The leadership of the party in Delta are united in support of our governorship candidate in the quest to recover our mandate.

“I want to implore you all, especially my teeming supporters and APC faithful, who are pained by what has happened to keep hope alive. This is a temporary setback, victory is certain. We are going to bring back the stolen mandate,” Dafinone said.

Arsenal 4-1 Crystal Palace: 'Fearless Gunners have a beautiful attitude' - Martin Keown analysis

by: Martin Koewn

I loved hearing Bukayo Saka say Arsenal don't fear anyone when we asked him what he thinks about the Gunners' title run-in on MOTD2.

It's a beautiful attitude for any side to have, and it's especially important in the situation that Saka and his team-mates are in now, eight points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table with 10 games to go.

I know from my own experiences as an Arsenal player that when you reach this stage of the season with a chance of winning the Premier League, then your eyes are drawn straight to the fixture list. The finish line is in sight and you kind of go into countdown mode, working through your remaining games.

When we spoke to him after the Gunners beat Crystal Palace on Sunday, we asked Saka about their remaining fixtures - but he threw it back at me and asked me what I thought.

I said there were a lot of tough games coming up, especially away from home. They are probably going to have to win at Anfield and St James' Park, and their trip to the Etihad is obviously massive, so there is no time to relax, even with the points cushion they have got. They have to keep going until it is done.

He was like, 'Yeah I'll take that answer', and I am not surprised that he is thinking the same way we did when we won the title under Arsene Wenger in 1998 and 2002, after fierce battles with Manchester United each time.

Winning run reminds me of past glories

Snapshot of the top of the Premier League: 1st Arsenal, 2nd Man City, 3rd Man Utd, 4th Tottenham, 5th Newcastle & 6th Liverpool

Arsenal will have to hold off City's challenge to take their crown, and everyone can see that Pep Guardiola's side are beginning to click and move up a gear. Erling Haaland is a goal machine, and he isn't missing at the moment.

I have heard some absurd things about Haaland and how he is somehow making City weaker, even as recently as their draw with RB Leipzig at the end of last month. But I've not heard anyone suggest that this week. We've all seen how deadly he is.

It is obvious why he is doing so well - because City have so many intelligent players that they were always going to find a way to feed him. But so far, whatever City have done, Arsenal have found an answer, firstly to maintain their advantage and now extend it.

City went top when they beat the Gunners at Emirates Stadium five weeks ago but Arsenal have hit back with six successive league wins, which is just an incredible response.

It reminds me of when we won 12 successive games under Wenger from the start of February to clinch the title in 2002, and also the 10 wins in a row from March onwards that took us to glory in 1998.

We came from behind then, but this situation is really no different despite Arsenal having the advantage this time. It still feels like they are going to have to win all of their games, apart from their trip to City.

Again, that reminds me of 2002, when we beat our nearest rivals United at Old Trafford in the penultimate game to clinch the title. Our thinking beforehand was that we just needed to not lose, and we could wrap it up at the weekend. But Sylvain Wiltord's goal meant we went one better and actually won it there.

You wouldn't dare to dream that Arsenal could do that at the Etihad. But, as Saka told us, they believe they can beat anyone. And on their day I think they can, which is what has helped to get them into this amazing position in the first place.

It is going to be fascinating to see how the title race unfolds from here, but I would say Arsenal have done all they can do until now.

There is still so much work left, but they have got the points in bag to build up this lead and City will have to deal with some fixture congestion in order to catch them while they try to win the Champions League and FA Cup too. Basically, this lead might still not be enough, but Arsenal have put the defending champions under the maximum possible amount of pressure.

Saka keeps delivering goals and assists

Graphic showing Arsenal's starting XI v Crystal Palace: Ramsdale, White, Holding, Gabriel, Zinchenko, Odegaard, Partey, Xhaka, Saka, Martinelli, Trossard

Compared with some of Arsenal's forthcoming games, beating Palace at home was probably seen as being relatively simple. But that has not been the case against the Eagles in recent years - they hadn't lost on any of their previous four visits to the Emirates.

This time was different, and as well as the result, Arsenal's performance was the perfect way for them to sign off for the international break.

I made a point of praising Gabriel Martinelli when I spoke about the game on MOTD2 because he missed a penalty in the shootout against Sporting Lisbon in midweek but did not show any kind of hangover from that Europa League defeat.

Martinelli started the game so well, and was a real driving force with his determination down the left-hand side. In front of goal, he just gets better and better, and I think of him as a natural finisher when he gets into those central areas like he did to score the opener against Palace.

Another Arsenal player who had some disappointment this week was Ben White, who wasn't named in the England squad, and he played like he had a point to prove.

White's link-up play with Saka down the right is sensational and there always seems to be a chance at the end of it too.

Saka gives so much to this team that I was joking with him afterwards that Gareth Southgate should give him a rest in these next two England games. We don't want him injured now.

He has started every league game this season and, whether it is a goal or an assist, he keeps on delivering. Every Arsenal fan is hoping for more of the same in the final two months of the campaign.

How Arsenal are kings of the capital

It has gone under the radar a bit, but there is another reason why beating Palace is something for Arsenal to shout about.

They became the first side in 135 years of English Football League history to win nine London derbies in a single league season. So far they have only dropped points in one, in last month's draw against Brentford, which is some record.

Yes, there are more derbies than usual this year, but you cannot underestimate how difficult those games are. That makes things harder for Arsenal, not easier.

I know from playing in them that it is not just the north London derby with Tottenham that is fiercely contested. You have local rivals from the east, west and south of the city too.

It means a hell of a lot for them to beat you, and they are always waiting for their opportunity, especially in a season like this where Arsenal are getting lots of plaudits.

This season, almost a third of Arsenal's league games - 12 out of the 38 - are derbies, which is a huge chunk. It makes it relentless, because there is always one on the horizon - in fact, there are two still to go.

So it's not just, say, the Liverpool and City fixtures that stand out for me as being tough in Arsenal's run-in. The games against Chelsea and West Ham will be horrible too.

Neither of those teams are having great seasons, but they know they could stop Arsenal from winning the title. Whatever else they are playing for, that is all the incentive they need.

Cloete Murray: South African corruption investigator shot dead

By Samuel Horti

BBC News

A South African accountant who was investigating high-level corruption cases has been shot dead along with his son.

Cloete Murray, 50, was the liquidator for Bosasa, a company implicated in numerous government contract scandals.

He also worked as a liquidator for firms linked to the wealthy Gupta brothers, who deny bribery accusations.

Police will see if there is a link between Mr Murray's murder and these corruption investigations.

Mr Murray was shot by unknown gunmen while driving in Johannesburg with his 28-year-old son Thomas, a legal adviser, on Saturday.

His son died at the scene while Mr Murray was taken to hospital and later died of his injuries, local media reported, citing a police spokesperson.

The pair were driving their white Toyota Prado towards their home in Pretoria, South African media reported.

Mr Murray's job as a court-appointed company liquidator was to look into the accounts of firms that had folded, recover assets, and report any criminality.

One of those companies was Bosasa, a government contractor specialising in prison services.

The landmark Zondo commission into corruption concluded the company extensively bribed politicians and government officials to get government contracts during the nine-year presidency of Jacob Zuma, from 2009 to 2018.

Mr Zuma refused to co-operate with the inquiry but has denied accusations of corruption.

In 2018, current South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said he would repay a $35,000 (£27,300) donation from Bosasa.

An anti-corruption investigator found he had misled parliament over the donation, but that finding was dismissed by the country's High Court.

Mr Murray was also working as a liquidator for firms linked to the Gupta brothers. The Zondo commission found that the brothers - Ajay, Rajesh and Atul - tried to influence political and economic decisions during Mr Zuma's presidency in a process known as "state capture".

The Guptas moved from India to South Africa in 1993 and owned a wide-ranging portfolio of companies that enjoyed lucrative contracts with South African government departments and state-owned companies.

The South African authorities are currently working on having the Gupta brothers extradited from the UAE, where they have been arrested, to stand trial.

They have denied accusations of paying financial bribes to win contracts.

Manchester United came from a goal down to beat nine-man Fulham and reach the FA Cup semi-finals with a controversial victory at Old Trafford.

By Simon Stone at Old Trafford

Marco Silva's side looked on course for only their second last-four appearance since they lost to West Ham in the 1975 final when their world collapsed around a handball incident 15 minutes from time.

Jadon Sancho seemed to be shooting an equaliser into an empty net, only for Willian to charge across and clear.

Referee Chris Kavanagh initially gave a corner, but VAR advised the official to check the pitchside monitor, with Willian protesting and manager Silva furious.

Silva was red carded before Kavanagh could even reach a decision. Once he did, Willian was dismissed as well. Then Aleksander Mitrovic, who had put Fulham in front, pushed the referee's arm as he angrily remonstrated and became the third visitor to be sent off.

Once order was restored, Bruno Fernandes tucked home the penalty.

In the space of two minutes, Fulham had lost two men, their manager and the lead.

Two minutes later, Marcel Sabitzer turned home Luke Shaw's cross to make it 2-1 to United before Fernandes added an injury-time third to knock Fulham out of the FA Cup.

United will now play Brighton in the semi-final at Wembley.

The sight of Silva pacing up and down the tunnel in a state of fury did not suggest it is a defeat he will take well.

Not since the days of Alan Mullery and Bobby Moore have they enjoyed the experience of an FA Cup final, and they appeared so close.

Had it not been for David de Gea, they would have been out of sight.

After Mitrovic had pounced at the far post to convert Issa Diop's flick on, the United keeper performed heroics to keep the score down.

At full stretch, De Gea turned away a curling Willian shot that was heading for the far corner, then denied Mitrovic with another superb stop before the Serbian headed a half-decent opportunity over.

With former United midfielder Andreas Pereira excelling on his Old Trafford return and Tim Ream leading a robust defence, the hosts appeared to be running out of ideas.

That was until Antony led a counter-attack and squared to Sancho, who skipped past Bernd Leno, turned inside Harrison Read and steadied himself before shooting - with Willian getting in the way on the goalline.

After that, it was mayhem.

United making it hard for themselves

We can never know what would have happened if Fulham had not suffered such a disastrous couple of minutes.

It is beyond question, however, that up to that point, United were poor.

Maybe their increasing number of below-par performances is a duel consequence of an arduous post-World Cup fixture schedule in which they have played 13 successive midweek matches (with a minimum of four more to come after the international break) plus a growing number of injuries and suspensions.

The continued injury-enforced absences of Christian Eriksen and Anthony Martial has put increased pressure on others to perform.

One who has risen to the challenge is Casemiro, but on Sunday the Brazilian was serving the first game of a four-match ban for his second dismissal in a matter of weeks.

It is to their credit, therefore, that they keep managing to find a way to win quite so often.

Fernandes, in particular, drives United on from central positions and Shaw has returned to form after a difficult few games.

However, without De Gea, they may have been out.

Edwards defeats Kamaru again to retain UFC welterweight title

By Adegboyega Adeleye

Leon Edwards retained his welterweight UFC title after defeating Kamaru Usman by majority decision at UFC 286 in London.

Edwards, who is on a 12-fight unbeaten streak in the UFC retained his title in front of his own fans after a brilliant striking display as he prevented the majority of Usman’s takedown attempts.

The 31-year-old Briton edged out former champion Kamaru Usman in their trilogy encounter with points. It was close match but Edwards landed the cleaner shots.

Judges scored the bout 48-46, 48-46, 47-47 to give Edwards a majority decision.

There was incredible noise around the electric O2 Arena in the early hours of Sunday as the raptorous crowd watched on as Leon Edwards was declared the winner.

The bout at the O2 Arena was billed as the biggest British MMA fight in history.

Edwards earned a shocking win against Usman in August where he avenged a 2015 loss to the 35-year old Nigerian. The win made him just the second British UFC champion and first since Michael Bisping in 2016.

The win therefore promoted the UFC to host a trilogy bout and its first numbered show in Britain since 2016, when Bisping defended his middleweight title against Dan Henderson in Manchester.

In what was an enthralling bout that saw both fighters produce a stellar display and end to end stuff in London, Edwards showed more determination as he edged Usman to earn his first title defence since defeating the Nigerian in August.

You’ve got a great champion’ – Usman hails Edwards

After the loss, Kamaru Usman congratulated Edwards on his accomplishments by calling him “a great champion.”

He also noted that he did enough to win but admitted it was close.

Usman told BT Sport: “I think I did enough to win the fight but I knew it was close.

“He had a great gameplan. I always said from the start we’d meet again and I’m not done. We will see each other again.

“I always gave him props for what he’s accomplished. He’s a brother like myself and great respect. London you’ve got yourself a great champion.

When asked about his plans to get back in the octagon, ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’, Usman who has now lost two successive fights said: “Not too long. I’ll get back with my coaches. I’m one of those guys, I can’t sit for too long.

“I’ll spend some time with my daughter. You guys get to watch us but you don’t know what we have to sacrifice to be here. We put it on the lines every time,” he added.

‘I might take a trip to Miami’– Edwards hints at a bout with Covington

After clinching victory in superb fashion, Jamaican-born Edwards called Kamaru a “great competitor” and also hinted at a bout with former interim welterweight champion Colby Covington, who was sat at cage-side.

He said: “That man [Colby Covington] has sat out for two years. I might take a little trip to Miami and see what’s going on there.”

On his win against Usman, Edwards said: “He didn’t get any takedowns I was landing cleaner shots. I took out his legs.

“Thanks to Kamaru for being a great competitior.

“I couldn’t get the kick around his head. He had the perfect defence. I was trying to set it up with kicks to the body and legs.

“I know it was a close fight so I knew I had to land the cleaner shots. He didn’t land many clean on me. He just had lots of pressure.

“Listen to the crowd !”

This is the time since 2016 a British UFC champion has defended a world title on home soil.

Sanwo-Olu, Rhodes-Vivour bicker violence threat

Meanwhile, the APC cautioned the Labour Party, LP, governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, over his statement that INEC and security agents should be blamed if Lagos boiled over the polls.

Publicity Secretary of APC, Lagos, Seye Oladejo, who cautioned Rhodes-Vivour, in a statement, called on the police to arrest the LP candidate.

Oladejo said: “The attention of the All Progressives Congress has been drawn to a statement made by Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate, Gbadebo Chinedu Rhodes-Vivour, on today’s elections.

“He accuses the Independent National Electoral Commission and the police of ‘provoking Lagosians’ and warning that ‘if tonight Lagos catches fire, it is not our fault.’

“He says ‘a lot of places are still under attack by thugs and hooligans of the APC.’ This scaremongering is typical of bad losers who lack the spirit of sportsmanship.

“The security agencies should note Mr. Rhodes-Vivour’s threat to set Lagos on fire as his predilection for violence and warmongering is well known to Nigerians.

“Should there be any breakdown of law and order in any part of our state, law enforcement agencies should know who to grab – Mr Rhodes-Vivour.”

Barcelona vs Real Madrid: Ancelotti backs Vinicius to escape Araujo shackles

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti backed winger Vinicius Junior to escape Ronald Araujo’s shackles when Los Blancos face Barcelona on Sunday in the Clasico in La Liga.

The Brazilian winger, key for Madrid this season, has been shut down by Barca defender Araujo in recent clashes with the Catalans, with coach Xavi Hernandez deploying the centre-back on the right to directly confront him.

Vinicius has scored twice in 12 games against Barcelona, both times before Araujo started at right-back.

No player has scored from open play against leaders Barca at Camp Nou in La Liga this season, giving champions Madrid a formidable task as they try to eat into their nine-point deficit.

“He’s had more difficulties than in other games, but Vini is always Vini, his mobility can help him get the best (from himself) in tomorrow’s game,” Ancelotti told a news conference Saturday.

“I’m thinking of putting him on the right, let’s see. He can play on the right, Vinicius.”

Ancelotti later said he was joking about using Vinicius on the right flank, but reiterated that the forward could be given more liberty to drift from the left.

“Obviously that wasn’t serious, but mobility could be important, not having a fixed reference point. Speaking generally, against a forward that’s another problem for a defence.

“Vini will play on the left, with more mobility.”

Xavi also looked forward to the battle between Araujo and Vinicius.

“Araujo is very physically strong, he’s quick, fast, and understands the movements of his opponents,” Xavi told reporters Saturday.

“He’s responsible, and a leader. He’s a world class defender, one of the best in the world. Having Ronald in the team, is a guarantee, an advantage.

“Usually when he takes on Vinicius, he comes out as the winner of the battle, but Vinicius can make a big difference.

“It’s not just Ronald, it’s (everyone) looking out, and collectively, we’ve been very good against Madrid.”

Xavi said he was looking forward to coaching in the Clasico at Camp Nou for the first time, with his prior clashes with Madrid all taking place away from home.

“I am very motivated, you know I’m a big Barca fan, these games get me going,” added Xavi. “It’s my first Clasico at Camp Nou (as coach), I’m excited, I’m motivated.”

– Defensive Barca –

Barcelona beat Real Madrid 1-0 earlier in March in the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The visitors put on a defensive masterclass while Madrid had more of the ball, earning Xavi some criticism for betraying the club’s preferred style of possession football.

Barcelona were without several key players for that game, including Robert Lewandowski, Pedri and Ousmane Dembele — the latter two of whom are still out for Sunday’s derby.

The league leaders have also won 1-0 in the top flight nine times this season, keeping 19 clean sheets in 25 games.

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone even had a dig at Xavi, noting how some “lovers of the beautiful game” can now be heard saying 1-0 is an attractive scoreline.

The Barcelona coach responded saying that while he respected his Atletico counter-part, winning by a goal in the Clasico would be a “marvellous” result.

“What problem is there with 1-0? Barcelona won their first European Cup (in 1992) with (Ronald) Koeman’s goal, 1-0, and nobody said anything,” added Xavi.

“I’d prefer a 4-0, a 5-4, but it’s hard to score goals, people defend well, people who haven’t played the game can’t understand it. Winning 1-0 is a marvellous result.”

Man City’s Walker won’t face criminal charges over indecent exposure

Manchester City defender Kyle Walker will face no further police action over allegations that he indecently exposed himself in a bar earlier this month.

Cheshire police had opened an investigation after The Sun newspaper published security camera footage online of Walker in a bar in Wilmslow, 14 miles south of Manchester, on March 8.

A spokesperson for Cheshire Constabulary said: “Officers have now concluded their inquiries, which included speaking to those directly involved.

“A 32-year-old man from Prestbury voluntarily attended a police station for questioning on 16 March.

“He has been dealt with by an out-of-court disposal and the matter is now closed.”

City boss Pep Guardiola described the incident as a “private issue” that had been dealt with internally.

England manager Gareth Southgate said he had “spoken at length” with Walker before including him in his squad on Thursday for Euro 2024 qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine.

Walker has won four Premier League titles among nine major trophies since joining City from Tottenham in 2017 and has been capped 73 times by England.

Tinubu asks security agencies to caution Obi over inciting comments

.Wants NBC to sanction TV stations granting LP candidate access

By Omeiza Ajayi, Abuja

President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has asked security agencies in the country to caution the presidential candidate of the Labour Party LP, Mr Peter Obi against making incendiary comments capable of throwing the nation into a tailspin.

This came as he asked the national Broadcasting Commission NBC to caution television stations against granting access to Obi to delegitimize the presidential election.

‘We also advise the NBC to caution TV houses giving Obi the platform to de-legitimise a free and fair election, when he has taken his case to court”, he stated.

Tinubu made the demands in a statement issued Friday night in Abuja and signed by the Director, Media and Publicity at his campaign council, Mr Bayo Onanuga.

He said; “The defeated Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi still goes around inflaming passions, spreading lies as if he is still campaigning for the highest office in the land, weeks after the exercise was concluded and a winner announced.

“We are worried about his recent media rounds on Arise TV and Channels TV, in which he made profoundly misleading, criminally false and inciting statements about the election that he lost woefully.

“We call on the security agencies to caution him from further making incendiary remarks, especially after he claimed he is challenging the results of the election in the tribunal.

“Asked on Arise TV about his loss, he derided the election, considered by many to be the best in our recent history. He described it recklessly as ‘probably the worst’, ‘wrong election’, ‘not God’s will’. In one moment, he likened the election to ‘robbery’.

“He also fleetingly wore the toga of a political scientist redefining democracy, which the world knows as government of the people, by the people, and for the people.

“According to Obi, “to win in democracy is to win the people. The declared winner, Bola Tinubu did not win- that is what we are challenging…’ Later, he clarified in his moments of sobriety, after leaving the studio, that what he wanted to challenge was the process of declaring the winner.

“On Channels TV few days later, Obi made the ridiculous claim about ‘his stolen mandate’, echoing the position of his unthinking mob of supporters, who believe that he won the election, because some sponsored polls made the claim before the election.

“We consider the claim by the former governor of Anambra as very fraudulent as he fell short of winning any mandate. He came third, not even second, losing by 2.6 million votes to President-elect Bola Tinubu, despite getting outrageously padded votes from his ethnic South East states.

“From the false narrative Obi has been pushing, he is the one trying to steal Bola Tinubu’s mandate, by appealing unashamedly to tribal and religious sentiments and by resorting to his sickening penchant for lying boldfacedly to snatch what does not belong to him.

“We consider Obi’s TV statements as prejudicial to the case he has filed and contemptuous of the court. Only a desperate politician like Obi will embark on his course of action: seeking justice in court and simultaneously embarking on a mission of blackmailing and intimidating the judiciary.

“He is trying to present himself before his case takes off in court as a helpless, cheated victim of the ‘system’, robbed of a mandate by INEC. He is trying to position himself as the candidate ‘who won the people’, who is loved by the people, going by his self-serving definition of democracy.

“His antics, if he is able to sway the judges is to make them cancel the entire election, even without sufficient, substantial proof of malpractice. This will pave way for his dream alliance with the PDP, the second losing party, in a fresh election.

“The PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar spoke about his readiness to enter into such alliance in his post-poll press conference, as he accused Obi of taking his votes in the South South and South East.

“We hope the men and women of the judiciary will not fall for Obi’s cheap tactics and really examine the cases before them on merit and on the basis of substantial evidence presented.

“Let us remind Obi once again, he is welcome in the court,, where he is bound to lose woefully.

“Finally we advise Mr. Obi to stop attacking the integrity of the election just because he did not win the majority votes and the constitutional spread in 24 states. He should stop deceiving his gullible followers and raising unrealistic hopes about reclaiming the presidency from Asiwaju Tinubu.

“We also advise the NBC to caution TV houses giving Obi the platform to de-legitimise a free and fair election, when he has taken his case to court”.
