Gabon Coup: Contagious Autocracy Spreading In Africa – Tinubu

Following Wednesday’s coup in Gabon, Nigerian President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed concern that a contagion of autocracy was spreading across Africa.

He said he was working very closely with other Heads of State in the African Union towards a comprehensive consensus response after the coup in Gabon.

The coup came amid the ongoing efforts to resolve the crisis in Niger Republic following the overthrow of President Mohamed Bazoum by the country’s military.

The Gabonese coupists annulled Saturday’s election, which Bongo was declared to have won.

The soldiers announced the dissolution of all the institutions in Gabon and shut the country’s borders, saying their actions were on behalf of the central African nation’s security and defence forces.

Noureddin Bongo Valentin, one of the sons of Gabonese President, Ali Bongo Ondimba, was also arrested for “treason”.

The ousted president was placed under house arrest alongside some of his family members.

“President Ali Bongo is under house arrest, surrounded by his family and doctors,” they said in a statement read out on state TV.

A military leader said those arrested were accused of treason, embezzlement, corruption and falsifying the president’s signature, among other allegations.

Bongo, in a video, begged his international friends to make noise about his ouster.

“My name is Ali Bongo Ondimba, President of Gabon. I am sending a message to all friends that we have all over the world to tell them to make noise, to make noise,” Bongo said.

Tinubu’s spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, told reporters in Abuja yesterday that the president was watching closely with deep concern for Gabon’s socio-political stability and the autocratic contagion spreading across different regions of Africa.

He said Tinubu said the rule of law and a faithful recourse to the constitutional resolutions and instruments of electoral dispute resolution must not be allowed to perish from the continent.

Ngelale said: “President Bola Tinubu is watching developments in Gabon very closely with deep concern for the country’s socio-political stability and at the seeming autocratic contagion apparently spreading across different regions of our beloved continent.

“The president, as a man who has made significant personal sacrifices in his own life in the course of advancing and defending democracy, is of the unwavering belief that power belongs in the hands of Africa’s great people and not in the barrel of a loaded gun.

“The president affirms that the rule of law and a faithful recourse to the constitutional resolutions and instruments of electoral dispute resolution must not at any time be allowed to perish from our great continent.

“To this end, the president is working very closely and continuing to communicate with other Heads of State in the African Union towards a comprehensive consensus on the next steps forward with respect to how the crisis in Gabon will play out and how the continent will respond to the contagion of autocracy we are seeing spread across our continent.”

Don’t emulate Gabonese army, MURIC warns Nigerian military

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) yesterday advised the Nigerian military not to emulate the Gabonese Army that sacked President Bongo.

MURIC’s Executive Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, in a statement, noted that the Nigerian Army’s hands were already full with engagements with Boko Haram, insurgents and other security threats and thus could not afford to add political intervention to its challenges.

He said while the army should not bite more than it could swallow, Nigerian rulers should borrow a leaf from what had happened in Gabon, Niger, Mali and others as good governance had become mandatory on leaders who, he said, must alleviate poverty, hunger and disease from the land.

He said: “While we frown upon the sit-tight syndrome adopted by the Bongo family in Gabon and some African countries, we strongly condemn this military coup. MURIC advises the Nigerian Army to remain apolitical and to resist the temptation to emulate the Gabonese army by staging any coup in Nigeria.

“Any Nigerian soldier who contemplates coup in the present dispensation is doing so for selfish reasons. It is noteworthy that the Nigerian political firmament is absolutely different from that of Gabon where the Bongo dynasty has been in power for more than 50 years.

“A military coup against the current Muslim-Muslim ticket will be interpreted as a direct attack on Muslims in the country in view of the deep religious sentiments, which pervaded the controversy surrounding the Muslim-Muslim ticket.

“Any military coup in Nigeria now will carry a religious taint. Nigeria has not recovered from the one-sided anti-North coup of 15th January, 1966 staged by Igbo soldiers and the vengeful counter-coup of July 1966 staged mainly by soldiers of Northern extraction,” Akintola said.

Gabon coup deeply concerning – Commonwealth

The Commonwealth has expressed concern over the coup in Gabon.

Its Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland, said: “The Commonwealth Charter is clear that member states must uphold the rule of law and the principles of democracy at all times.”

Bongo, who came to power after his father’s death in 2009, won a third term in Saturday’s election, which the opposition argued was heavily disputed.

Gabonese celebrate fall of Bongo’s 53-year dynasty

Hundreds of Gabon’s citizens yesterday flooded the capital, Libreville, to celebrate the coup and the end of Bongo’s 53-year dynasty in the country.

According to Al Jazeera, immediately after the end of Bongo’s rule was announced, crowds took to the streets in jubilation including a shopkeeper, Viviane Mbou, who offered the soldiers juice, which they declined.

“Long live our army,” said Jordy Dikaba, a young man walking with his friends on a street lined with police.

“I am marching today because I am joyful. After almost 60 years, the Bongos are out of power,” says Jules Lebigui, an unemployed 27-year-old who joined the celebrations on Libreville’s streets.”

The soldiers, who appeared on Gabonese national television to declare they had taken power and annulled the election, explained that they struck because of irresponsible and unpredictable governance in the country.

AFP quoted the coupists’ leader thus: “Our beautiful country, Gabon, has always been a haven of peace. Today, the country is going through a serious institutional, political, economic and social crisis. We are therefore forced to admit that the organisation of the general elections of 26 August 2023 did not meet the conditions for a transparent, credible and inclusive ballot so much hoped for by the people of Gabon.

“Added to this is irresponsible and unpredictable governance, resulting in a continuing deterioration in social cohesion, with the risk of leading the country into chaos. Today, 30 August 2023, we — the defence and security forces, gathered as the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI) on behalf of the people of Gabon and as guarantors of the institutions’ protection — have decided to defend peace by putting an end to the current regime. The borders are closed until further notice.

“All the institutions of the Republic are dissolved: the government, the Senate, the National Assembly, the Constitutional Court, the Economic, Social and Environmental Council and the Gabonese Elections Centre.

“We call for calm and serenity from the public, the communities of sister countries settled in Gabon, and the Gabonese diaspora. “We reaffirm our commitment to respecting Gabon’s commitments to the national and international community. People of Gabon, we are finally on the road to happiness. May God and the spirits of our ancestors bless Gabon. Honour and loyalty to our homeland.”

Zinchenko names Arsenal star as the best player in the league in his position

Zinchenko names Thomas Partey as the best defensive midfielder in the Premier League.

Arsenal left-back, Oleksandr Zinchenko recently spoke with Joel Beya and Rio Ferdinand on FiveUK where he was asked who the best holding midfielder he’s ever played with is. Arsenal fans will absolutely love his answer.

Zinchenko has played with Thomas Partey and more recently, Declan Rice at Arsenal. However he’s also played with some of the best defensive midfielders in the world during his time at Manchester City, including Fernandinho and Rodri. The later most recently won Manchester City the Champions League and is in with a shout of winning the Ballon d’Or next year – that’s how good the Spaniard has been in the middle of the park for Pep Guardiola’s side.

However that didn’t stop Zinchenko from picking Thomas Partey as the best defensive midfielder he has ever played with. The Ukrainian thinks Partey is better than both Casemiro and Rodri with the Arsenal midfielder a world class player according to Zinchenko.

Oleksandr Zinchenko on Thomas Partey: “Thomas Partey is the most underrated player in the Premier League I think. Casemiro is an absolutely world class with five Champions Leagues but for me, if I had to choose one, it’d choose Thomas Partey. He’s better than Casemiro.

“I had a debate in my head who is actually the best holding midfielder I ever played with. The debate was between Fernandinho, Thomas Partey and Rodri but Thomas Partey, he’s so good. He has everything.

“Rodri fits perfectly in Manchester City’s system, if you take him out it’s a different City. Rodri is the main detail there because for me that is hardest position to play and Rodri suits them so well, but Thomas Partey is the best for me.”

Thomas Partey is currently playing in an inverted right-back role under Mikel Arteta in the first three games of the season, where he’s had a mixed time getting used to his new position so far. Surely if Partey is world class and as good as Zinchenko thinks he is then he should be starting in his natural position and where we’ve seen his best performances at Arsenal – in front of the defence, starting attacks.

Garcia agrees with Osimhen’s demands for Napoli

By Peter Akinbo

New Napoli coach Rudi Garcia agrees with Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen that the Partenopei should always focus on what they can improve, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 2-0 win over Sassuolo was the home debut for the coach, who took over from Scudetto winner Luciano Spalletti, and he had already overseen a 3-1 comeback triumph in the season opener away to Frosinone.

It was on paper a fairly comfortable victory, Osimhen converting a penalty and Raspadori missing another spot-kick before Kvicha Kvaratskhelia came off the bench to provide his first assist of the season for Giovanni Di Lorenzo.

At the final whistle Osimhen was furious with himself and his teammates for a move that broke down, a sign of how much he always wants to do better.

“He (Osimhen) is absolutely right!” Garcia told DAZN.

“We won and picked up six points, we practically didn’t run any risks, that is all positive, but we could also have improved in attack. I think not even 20 per cent of our shots were on target today, so there’s no miracle cure here, if you don’t get it on target, you don’t score goals.”

Osimhen had converted the first penalty and should’ve taken the second, but the Nigerian himself decided to hand it over to teammate Giacomo Raspadori.

“It is a pity for Raspa, who hit the woodwork after a couple of minutes and every great player has missed a penalty in his time.

“That is a great sign, because it means he is thinking about the team and not just about himself. I loved that. Raspadori is an attacking player who can feature in any of the forward roles, he will score goals and get assists. Raspa is not a player who can stay on the right or left, he needs to roam around and give more options to Osimhen.

“The same goes for Kvara, he must give his opposing full-back a sense of constant uncertainty and unpredictability. He is unpredictable when he dribbles, but I think he can be more unpredictable tactically as well,” he said.

Osimhen has now scored three goals in his first two games this season and his goal against Sassuolo took him to a total of 100 club goals joining elite Nigerian company among the likes of Rashidi Yekini and Nwankwo Kanu.

Doctors Need Alternative Sources Of Income – NMA

NMA Chairman of  Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Kaduna Chapter, Dr Sheyin Madaki, has said that doctors in the contemporary economic hardship needed alternative sources of income.

Madaki said this at the association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held yesterday in Kafanchan, Jema’a local government area of Kaduna State.

The theme of the AGM was “Doctor’s well-being in current Nigerian economy: A call for alternative source of income”.

He said the need for doctors to get alternative sources of income could not be overemphasized.

Madaki added that doctors must begin to look at entrepreneurship, mentoring, business and innovative ideas as additional streams to help solve the challenges of their low income.

He said that the present economic realities that have hit the nation further called for urgent intervention by government through immediate alleviation of the sufferings by way of palliatives, incentives to workers, tax rebate and others.

“The last one year has had its own fair share of challenges as regards the wellbeing of doctors in the present economic realities.

“The State Officers’ Committee along with support of affiliate leaders have left no stone unturned in ensuring that the worsening welfare of members in the state is squarely addressed through continuous engagements with government and other agencies,” he said.

The NMA chairman added that the many challenges of the state’s doctors had been of paramount concern. He, however, noted that significant gains were made.

Madaki said that the present government had shown political will and commitment in addressing the lingering and neglected issue of doctors’ welfare for over a decade.

He said: “Being the first time in history that NMA held its AGM in Kafanchan and the Southern Zone at large, demonstrates unity and inclusiveness for all doctors in the state.

“I believe we are on course to a new dawn in NMA Kaduna. Unity, stability, transparency and accountability have been of utmost priority to us,” Madaki said.

He thanked  Gov. Uba Sani, his deputy and commissioner for health, Hajiya Imma Ahmed for the concerns and commitments they had shown towards ending the suffering of healthcare workers in the state.

Earlier, Sani, represented by Ahmed said that the provision of health was central to his government’s ‘Sustain Manifesto’.

Sani said that the state government had resolved to build and strengthen a healthcare system that was preventive in approach, well-equipped, staffed, accessible and affordable.

He said that in illustrating the commitment of his administration to health matters, the first bill he signed into law on assuming office was the ‘Public Health Law’.

Sani said that the law provided institutional framework to achieve ‘One Health System’ made up of three sectors of health, environment and agriculture.

“This is because of the interplay that exists in terms of causation and prevention of diseases in public health system.

“It cannot be overstated that a healthy population is paramount if we are to improve national productivity, drive development and improve our overall human capital indices.

“In doing this, the role of doctors is pivotal,” the governor said.

Sani, therefore, restated his administration’s determination to improve the welfare of doctors for them to be able to discharge their duties satisfactorily and without distractions.

“This is why we take seriously our ongoing negotiation with our Association of Resident Doctors (ARD),” Sani added.

He, therefore, acknowledged that the idea of seeking alternative sources of income within the medical community was not just a pragmatic response to economic pressures, but also an opportunity for professional growth and diversification.

“It opens avenues for innovation, collaboration, and the expansion of the frontiers of medical practitioners beyond the boundaries of medical practice,” he added.

Sani said that the international economic meltdown which was brought about by COVID-19 in 2021 still lingers.

The governor said the Russian-Ukraine war, international souring prices of oil and the removal of petroleum subsidy in Nigeria had combined to devalue workers take home pay, noting that Nigerian doctors are no exception.

He, however, said the government was currently working on salary increases across board, stressing, “it will not really solve the problem because of frequent corresponding increase in prices in the market.

“Each employee must find ways to augment their formal incomes as government puts other micro-economic measures in place, as for our doctors, whatever you decide to do must be ethical and agreeable with your professional calling.

“I challenge this conference to come up with passive income streams that satisfy outlined criteria agreed by participants.

“These criteria should ensure that doctors do not compromise their primary responsibilities to their patients and society,” Sani said.

He implored the doctors to engage in thoughtful discussions during the meeting, share experiences, insights, and ideas that could contribute to the well-being of doctors in the state and Nigeria as a whole. (NAN)

Tinubu Admits Error In Chicago Varsity Certificates, Blames Clerk

By: Aina Ojonugwa

August 25, – Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, has blamed the clerk of the Chicago State University (CSU) for errors in his academic documents and certificate.

The President made the disclosure in court filings before the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, in response to a legal process initiated by former Nigeria’s Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections, Atiku Abubakar.

Atiku, in an application filed at the District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, is asking the Chicago State University (CSU) to release the academic records of President Bola Tinubu.

The Court had given President Tinubu up until August 23 to make a formal filing on why his records should not be released to the petitioner, Atiku Abubakar.

Atiku had subpoenaed the CSU to make Tinubu’s academic records available for his access, believing that such discoveries would shed more light on the controversies surrounding the President’s academic records.

There have been crises of authenticity about the documents that Tinubu submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and a viral document that the CSU, in the 1970s, admitted a female student bearing Bola Tinubu, who was born on March 29, 1954.

In complying with the directive of the court, President Tinubu’s lawyer, on Wednesday, said that an unidentified clerk of the university “unfortunately” made the errors as to the dates the school stated on his recently-issued certificate and when he actually graduated, thereby creating “the appearance of differences.”

Tinubu’s new claim was made before the judge hearing the case, Jeffery Gilbert of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago.

Tinubu’s response, which was signed by his lawyers, Oluwole Afolabi and Christopher Carmichael, quoted in part, “Unfortunately, in responding to the illegal and invalid subpoena, CSU made several errors.

“CSU issued a new diploma for Bola A. Tinubu, but incorrectly wrote the date of graduation as June 27, 1979.

“The correct date was June 22, 1979, but that scrivener’s error – along with a change in the CSU logo, the font on the diploma, and leadership at CSU who signed the diploma created the appearance of differences between an earlier issued diploma and the one issued in response to the 2022 subpoena.”

Nigerian senator urges young techies to harness existing opportunities

By Qosim Suleiman

The Senator representing Lagos East in the National Assembly, Mukhail Abiru, has urged budding software developers and tech enthusiasts to harness massive opportunities in the tech space.

Delivering a keynote address at the second annual Hackfest, organised by GenZtechies, at the University of Lagos, Akoka over the weekend, Mr Abiru noted that technology is gradually revolutionising all economic sectors.

He shared the experience of how the tech industry revolutionised the banking sector where he worked for about three decades.

He noted that the task of nation-building requires collective efforts of all citizens.

The lawmaker emphasised that young people should be encouraged and galvanised to explore the opportunities that the current fourth industrial revolution age has provided which is technology & innovation.

He challenged young entrepreneurs and tech professionals to strive for excellence and success in their respective fields so they can make quality contributions to the policy development process of the nation.

Mr Abiru noted that he will continue to support initiatives that provide platforms for young Nigerians to thrive in tech, business and other areas of endeavours.

He commended the courage and resilience of promoters of the GenZ Hackfest.

About GenZtechies

GenZtechies was founded in 2020 as a small WhatsApp group for youths in tech and has grown to become arguably Africa’s fastest-growing network for Gen-Zs in tech after their international expansion in late 2021.

Obi will soon be declared Nigeria’s president, Abure tells Nigerians in US

Julius Abure, national chairman of the Labour Party (LP), says Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the party, will be declared president of Nigeria by the tribunal.

Abure spoke while addressing some Nigerians in the United States (US) during a tour of the country.

Obi who came third in the presidential election held in February and his party are challenging the outcome of the poll.

They are asking the court to nullify the victory of Bola Tinubu, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Abure, who is on a tour to the United Kingdom and the US, said the judgment by the presidential election petition tribunal (PEPT) is expected to come on or before September 16.

“Following Peter Obi’s participation in the 2023 general election, we changed the political narratives in Nigeria. We gave them a run for their money,” he said.

“They have murdered sleep and they will sleep no more. They have stolen what is not for them and they will not sleep until we recover it all.

“We are expecting judgment between now and the 16th of September. And I am very sure Peter Obi will become President.

“Without sounding immodest, since they took over, things are now worse. The only party and the only candidate that has solutions to the challenges of the country is the Labour Party and Peter Obi. And so we still believe that things will change in Nigeria.

“I want to say that we should not lose hope, we should not be discouraged. The hope is still alive and I am confident that Peter Obi will be president.”

Barcelona really do have a new Ronaldinho – he even has the standing ovation to prove it

Robert Lewandowski of FC Barcelona celebrates his goal with Lamine Yamal during the La Liga match between Villarreal CF and FC Barcelona played at La Ceramica Stadium on August 27 in Villarreal, Spain.

Nestor Watach28th August 2023

It’s not every day that home fans are so impressed by an opposition player that they applaud them off the pitch. But then again, it’s not every day that talents like Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal emerge.

The kid – and he literally still is a child – was nothing short of a phenomenon in Barcelona’s 4-3 thriller comeback victory at Villarreal.

Barcelona’s youngest-ever debutant, aged 15 years, 9 months, 16 days when he was handed an 11-minute cameo against Real Betis back in April, Yamal evidently possesses the kind of freakishly prodigious necessary to be fast-tracked to first-team contention two years before he can buy a bottle of Estrella Damm.

It’s been obvious for some time that Yamal possesses ability way beyond his years. You just have to look at the way he ran rings around kids much older than him when he was just 13 years old.

As his manager has stated, he’s not become the youngest player to start a La Liga match this century because of a whim or a gimmick. He deserves to.

But a twist of fate has afforded him these opportunities so early on; he’s bumped up a place in the pecking order following Ousmane Dembele’s shock and sudden departure to PSG.

And he’s getting these starts because Raphinha is serving a three-match ban, having been shown a straight red in Barcelona’s ill-tempered opener at Getafe. God bless that fixture computer.

In just his second start for his boyhood club, Yamal became the youngest-ever player to register a La Liga assist by floating in a cross for fellow La Masia graduate Gavi to head home.

He was desperately unlucky not to score, hitting the woodwork twice, the second time proving instrumental in Robert Lewandowski’s match-winning tap-in.

Yamal was Barcelona’s best and most dangerous player as they compensated for their defensive frailties by coming from 3-2 down to win 4-3. As noted by Sid Lowe, the Man of the Match was no man at all.

“I try to take advantage of every opportunity,” Yamal told local broadcaster Movistar in his first televised interview

“This is precisely what Xavi asks young people, to not be afraid. Luckily I’m not scared. I go out and I play football which is what I’m good at.

“My mother is a little scared when I’m a starter but she supports me a lot,” he added, looking every bit the shy teenager he very much is.

The fans at El Madrigal had seen Quique Setien’s Yellow Submarine fight back from two goals behind, lead, and then blow their chance to register what would’ve been an all-too-rare victory over their reigning Spanish champions.

And yet they got over their frustration to recognise that they bore witness to something genuinely special and applauded Barcelona’s star in the making when he was withdrawn on 75 minutes. He wasn’t even born the night that Ronaldinho unforgettably received a standing ovation from Real Madrid fans.

What a talent 💫 pic.twitter.com/gXejCLcBAU

— ESPN FC (@ESPNFC) August 27, 2023

Xavi Hernandez featured in midfield the night that Ronaldinho gave the performance of his life as Barcelona beat Real Madrid 3-0 at the Bernabeu back in 2005.

Himself a product of the academy that has produced more world-class superstars than any other, the Barcelona manager knows something special when he sees it.

“My expectations [for Yamal] are very high,” Xavi told reporters in his post-match press conference.

“He’s a starter not because of the coach’s whim. His decision-making is almost always correct. He’s intelligent. He’s exceptional.

“I’d like to see him play with the Spanish national team. He hasn’t told me anything about his plans. I hope he stays at Barcelona for many years.

“He has the potential to make a mark. But with patience. I don’t think there will be management issues. He’s delighted and happy. He’s humble, works hard, loves football… I see him ready to play. His age surprises me: just turned 16.”

It’s very early days for Yamal. He only needs to look at team-mate Ansu Fati, four years his senior, to see that there may well be injuries and setbacks after exploding onto the scene so young.

Yet it’s impossible to look at Barcelona’s latest wonderkid and not get very, very excited about what the future holds.

As Obasa Squares Up with Sanwo-Olu in Lagos

As Obasa Squares Up with Sanwo-Olu in Lagos…

Segun James traces the history of the face-off between Lagos state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon Mudasiru Obasa, which culminated in the recent rejection of 17 Commissioner-nominees by the Assembly.

If it was a delibrate move to embarrass Lagos state Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, it was spectacularly effective and devastating. The Governor was left red-faced as he felt the first challenge to his authority since he took office in 2019. The Lagos State House of Assembly in a surprise move had rejected 17 nominees that Governor Sanwo-Olu submitted to the Assembly.

Of the 39 nominees screened, only 22 scaled the hurdle while the others, mainly returning former commissioners were rejected.

This had never happened in the history of Lagos especially since the All Progressives Congress (APC) controls both the executive and the legislature.

To most people, the action of the House showed that there is a political war between the governor and the Assembly. But what could have led to this?

Before the face-off, there have been no love lost between the Governor and the Speaker of the Assembly, Hon Mudasiru Obasa. Following the decision of President Bola Tinubu to hand over the political control of the state of excellence to Sanwo-Olu, the Governor saw it as an opportunity to exert his authority on the polity, and especially the House of Assembly and its Speaker who saw himself as the alternate governor. So obvious was the aloofness of Obasa that he never attended any function with the Governor. He would rather delegate other Assembly members to represent him on such occasions.

Sanwo-Olu saw his new position as political leader as an opportunity to cut the Speaker to size. In the build up to the selection and election of the House of Assembly leadership, the governor propped up Hon Abiodun Tobun to challenge Obasa for the Speakership of the House.

The political move created so much tension in Lagos that President Tinubu was forced to invite both gladiators to State House, Abuja during which he brokered peace among them.

The President was said to have persuaded the Governor not to humiliate the Speaker but let Obasa retain his position as Speaker even as he specifically drummed it to the hearing of all those present at the peace meeting that the Governor remains the political leader of the state and party in Lagos. While the President’s decision is seen as a mediation, Obasa sees it as a move to  consolidate his hold on the Assembly.

Immediately he was re-elected Speaker, he ensured his loyalists in the House were put in leadership positions just as he alienated the opposition. He also went ahead to start challenging the Governor’s leadership.

The House accused the government of being soft on every issues, and more especially on security. They ordered him to address the House more than once. A move that had never happened in the history of the state.

It was in the middle of this tension that the Governor, in order to comply with the constitutional requirement of 60 days to submit his cabinet list forwarded a 39-man commissioner nominees list to the State Assembly. Most of those whose names were submitted included returning commissioners who were mainly technocrats brought in during Sanwo-Olu’s first term.

This was where the face-off between the Legislature and the Executive became glaring. Many of these technocrats, even though they held political positions for four years, never joined the party or relate with the politicians and members of the House. What’s more scandalous, they never registered as party members nor were they registered to vote at the election. Also, when queried, they do not know which ward they come from. They were also accused to have collected over N50 million each to mobilize voters, but never did. This, the legislators lamented applied to the most high profiled members of the last cabinet who see themselves as untouchables.

Another contributory factor is that almost all those rejected “have no political base and no grassroots affiliation.” Most of them are friends of the governor. For instance, former Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, who was rejected, has no political base, he is not a politician. The Assembly swept them aside because of this.

For instance, if performance was the yardstick for the confirmation, there is no way Abayomi will be disqualified, there is no way Gbenga Omotoso will be rejected, there is no way Folasade Adefisayo will be rejected, there is no way Sam Egube will be turned down, yet they were all rejected because of their political naiveness.

Another factor that worked against some of the nominees not cleared is that they were never registered in Lagos and they moved up to other state to vote, yet they aspire to political positions in the Centre of Excellence. The Assembly saw this as cheating on behalf of those who were around and took part in the election.

Some of the Commissioner-nominees did not also perform well during the screening at the House of Assembly. For instance, the former Special Adviser on Works and Infrastructure, Aramide Adeyoye, was said to have performed poorly during the screening. The House embarrassed her while the screening lasted. Asides this, Adeyoye is said to be the architect of her misfortune. As the special adviser on Works and Infrastructure during the first term of Sanwo-Olu, she was supposed to report to the Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadri Hamzat. She was said to have by-passed him and report directly to the governor. She only reported to the Deputy Governor after certain decisions have been taken. This did not go down well with Hamzat, who is not happy about the development. This made her case special and there was no way she could have scaled the screening as many forces were against her.

Religious factor is another reason many nominees were dropped. About 15 of those dropped by the Assembly are Christians. Some Muslim groups had raised dusts that of the 39 Sanwo-Olu nominees, only nine of them were Muslims. This might not be unconnected with why about 15 Christians were rejected by the Assembly.

Rebellion is in the air in Lagos; and it is threatening to derail the well-ordered system put in place by Tinubu. That the people and politicians think differently is now widely accepted. Why they do so is another matter. One possible explanation is that in the time politicians spend plotting, the people are docily expecting miracle from nowhere.

As the tension builds up, Lagos remains an exception to the rule in the political firmament of the country. There is only one Nigerian for whom Lagosians, great and small will turn up enmasse and on time, he is  President  Tinubu. This is because he controls the levers of politics in the only self reliant state government in the country – Lagos. In the political firmament of the state, he is the lone Iroko tree that makes a forest.

Today, Tinubu has moved up and on in the political ladders of the nation. Realizing this, he handed over the control of the political levers to Sanwo-Olu. He invested the Governor with the title of leader and head of the powerful Governance Advisory Council. A committee of old but powerful political leaders in the state.

If this did not go well with these leaders, no one can really say, but if the unfolding face-off between the Governor and Speaker of the State Assembly is anything to go by, this is the beginning of a possible protracted battle the end of which nobody can determine.

Before now, issues such as these would have been handled by Tinubu, but with him becoming the president, and now focused on nation’s governance, Sanwo-Olu is now on his own. How he handles it would determine a lot in the coming weeks and months.

'As a father of three daughters': Iniesta opens up on Spanish FA boss kissing Barca Femeni legend

Andres Iniesta has joined Xavi in support of Barca Femeni legend Jenni Hermoso and the whole national team of Spain amid the recent events.

"After what has happened this week, I would like to convey my sadness, as a person, as a father of three daughters, as a husband and as a footballer, in the face of the events that we are experiencing in our football and around the Spanish women's team.

"I believe that we cannot tolerate performances like the ones we have seen, which have tarnished a milestone as big as winning a World Cup. I cannot imagine the feeling that all the players of the national team must have right now seeing how they are not talking about the great tournament they had and the fantastic football they taught us all. It's a shame that a beautiful story that many players have built over so many years has become dirty.

"Instead, we have had to put up with a president who has held on to his position, who has not admitted that his behavior has been unacceptable and that it is damaging the image of our country and our football around the world."

Great statement from Andres. He keeps linking up with Xavi even in 2023!

Luis Rubiales, the Spanish FA president, forcefully kissed Barca Femeni legend Jenni Hermoso at the World Cup final ceremony. The player said she didn't like it despite Rubiales' claims that it was done by mutual consent.

Rubiales refused to resign. However, FIFA have just suspended the 46-year-old from all football-related activities for 90 days.

Fabrizio Romano here-we-goes the transfer confirming the medical for the player.

FG discovers illegal crude oil connection in Abia

The Federal Government’s Oil Theft Situation Assessment Delegation to the Niger Delta Region during the tour of states in the region.

An oil theft situation assessment delegation deployed in the Niger Delta by President Bola Tinubu discovered an illegal oil connection on Saturday.

From the illegal connection discovered at Owaza in Abia State, Nigeria loses an average of 7.2 million dollars monthly, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd. stated on Sunday.

It added that clandestine refineries, illegal bunkering operations and environmental devastation the team saw collectively translated into severe economic losses for the nation.

The delegation, led by the Minister of Defence, Malam Muhammed Badaru, has service chiefs, and the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, as members.

Other members are the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Mr Ekperipe Ekpo, the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, and the Group Chief Executive Officer, NNPC Ltd., Malam Mele Kyari.

Also in the team are the Commander of “Operation Delta Safe’’, Rear Admiral Olusegun Ferreira, operatives of security agencies and chief executive officers of regulatory agencies in the oil and gas sector.

The team visited the Trans-Niger Pipeline Right of Way in Owaza, Abia where an array of dismantled illegal connections were observed.

“We are ready to do whatever it takes for a peaceful Niger-Delta. Cease and desist from crude oil theft and economic sabotage,’’ Malam Badaru advised at the site.

In his remarks, Kyari said while oil theft in vessels could be tracked, oil-bearing communities must play a vital role in curbing oil theft within their communities.

“Oil theft is one of the reasons why Nigeria cannot meet her OPEC daily production quota,’’ he said.

Also speaking at the site, Chief Security Officer of Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Ltd., Mr Patrick Godwin, said some arrests had been made and culprits arraigned.

In his comments, Ribadu applauded security agencies, community security contractors, and NNPC Ltd. for stepping up the fight against oil theft and economic sabotage.

“The environment and livelihoods are being destroyed while the federation is deprived of revenue capable of shoring up the economy and strengthening the Naira,’’ he said.

Insecurity: Arrest vehicles with no plate number, Lagos orders security agents

By Olasunkanmi Akoni

The Lagos State Government has directed law enforcement agencies to apprehend motorists with defective vehicle registration number plates as well as those without any number fixed on their vehicles.

The state government, therefore urged motorists to desist from the unlawful act to avoid been prosecuted as the act  violates section 15 and 16 of the State’s Transport Reform Law 2018.

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Engr. Abdulhafiz Toriola, made the remarks at the weekend.

Explaining the anomaly of wrongful use of the number plate which has become rampant, the permanent secretary, noted that; covering of number plate without authorisation, use of faded number plate, use of damaged number plate, misuse of number plate and non use of number plate, all violates the law especially with the present security challenges facing the nation.

Quoting section 16 of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, TSRL, 2018, the Permanent Secretary reiterated that, ‘a person, who drives a vehicle that is not registered, or does not have affixed identification mark in the prescribed manner, commits an offence’.

While stressing the need for vehicles to be properly registered with number plates, the Toriola stated that a vehicle without a number can be used to commit crimes which may never be tracked.

“The purpose of using number plate is for proper identification and security as it is personalised for each vehicle,” he added.

Toriola therefore, urged motorists to use water and non-chemical to wash the number plates of their vehicles to prevent it from being damaged or faded.

Explaining further the act of misuse of number plate, the Permanent Secretary declared that the use of private number plate for commercial vehicle and otherwise also violates the TSRL, 2018.

For individuals who are at the moment not willing to register their vehicles for one reason or the other, Toriola advised they contact the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency, MVAA, of the State for the issuance of Temporary Vehicle Tag (TVT) in line with section 193 of the TSRL, 2018 pending their final decision on permanent registration or otherwise.

“The Law EnforcementAgencies have the been mandated to apprehend defaulters. I urge vehicle owners to comply with the State Government to strengthen the security architecture already put in place,” Toriola stated.

Waldrum queries FIFA rankings, says Falcons deserve top 20 place

By Johnny Edward

Super Falcons coach, Randy Waldrum, believes his side should have been ranked higher in the latest FIFA rankings released on Friday by the world body, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The nine-time African champions moved up eight places from 40th to 32nd, following their impressive performance at the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, where they reached the round of 16 for the third time in the history of the competition.

Waldrum’s team defeated co-hosts Australia 3-2, ranked 10th, and earned draws against Olympic champions Canada who were ranked seventh and Ireland, ranked 21st, before losing to European champions and eventual finalists England, ranked third, on penalties in the round of 16.

Speaking with SUNDAY PUNCH, the 66-year-old believes the Falcons should be ranked among the top 20 women’s teams in the wake of their outstanding display at the World Cup.

“Absolutely, we should be much higher after getting out of the group of death, not losing any game in 90 minutes, draw against defending Olympic Gold medalist (ranked 7), defeating host nation (ranked 10), draw against Ireland (ranked 21), and draw against European Champions England (ranked 3), we should at least be in the top 20,” Waldrum, who also coaches the Pittsburgh Panthers women’s team in the US, told PUNCH Sports Extra.

Waldrum also took to Twitter to express his disappointment, saying, “Must say I am a little surprised at this to say the least…not in a positive way!”

Also reacting to the Falcons rise in the latest ranking, the team’s former defender, Yinka Kudaisi, said the team deserved a better ranking.

Kudaisi capped 17 times, featured at the Women’s World Cup, WAFCON and the Olympic Games.

“I think I will agree with Waldrum on this issue, the Falcons deserve to be ranked better than the 32nd position they currently occupy,” she told SUNDAY PUNCH.

“Personally, I didn’t expect the kind of performance they produced at the World Cup. They proved themselves and shamed critics who never gave them a chance.”

Meanwhile, Waldrum, whose contract expires October 32, says he will love to continue as the Falcons coach.

“I am proud of my team,” Waldrum told journalist Osasu Obayuwana.

“I want to stay with this team and continue working towards the Olympics (Paris 2024). But that is not a matter for me to decide.”

UNILAG: Student group protests fee hike

By Gbenga Oloniniran

A student group, Students Solidarity Group Against Fee Hike, has declared a protest against the increment in fees by the management of the University of Lagos.
The spokespersons for the group, Tosin Solanke and Abayomi Godwin, in a statement made available to The PUNCH on Saturday, said it had “become imperative to inform the public of a mass protest against fee hike scheduled to start on September 6, 2023, as students, parents, civil society organisation, informal workers, are set to hit the streets to say enough of untold hardship meted out to us.”

On July 21, 2023, the management of UNILAG announced an increment in the tuition fees of the undergraduate students of the institution, citing “prevailing economic realities.”

The UNILAG management increased the fees from N19,000 to N190,250 for students studying medicine while for courses that require laboratory and studio, the students were to pay N140,250.

The student group, a handful of its members, had on Thursday gathered at Arise TV Complex after marching around the Ikoyi and Falomo areas of Lagos to sensitise passersby to the trend of fee hike in some varsities. They noted that the UNILAG management had failed to call the student delegation for a further meeting.

They said since the wake of the announced fee hike by the UNILAG management, “we in the Students Solidarity Group Against Fee Hike engaged in a series of actions to enlighten members of the public of the dangers that this anti-poor policy portends for the generality of the people.

“Our argument remains that the responsibility of funding public education can not be shifted to poor students and their parents even in a draining economy such as this. We also maintain that the decision taken by the UNILAG management, supervised by their employers, remains authoritarian and economically inconsiderate.”

“It is also important to state that after engaging in a discussion, and for over four weeks, the UNILAG Management has failed in its promise to reconvene the meeting with the student delegation.”

Tinubu to intervene in Talolorun’s case

Contacted, the spokesperson for UNILAG, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, who asked our correspondent to send her a text message, was yet to respond to the message sent as of press time.

Speaking further, the student group said, “Our lecturers, some of whom are postgraduate students, including those who are sponsors (parents/guardians) to many students, would not be able to afford these fees.”

“The protests will be comprehensive and total until fees are reverted.”

Contacted over the planned protest, the National Public Relations Officer of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Giwa Temitope, said the move was a nice development.

Giwa said, “It’s a nice one coming from them because the fees are unbearable at this time when there is hardship in the country.”

He lamented that some parents had up to two or three students in schools and it would be difficult for them to cater for such wards.

On July 31, 2023, President Bola Tinubu directed the authorities in all federal institutions of higher learning to avoid arbitrary increases in sundry fees payable and where possible defer further increases so that parents and students would not face too much difficulty.

The Nigerian ladies were unbeaten at the group stage, holding Olympic champions Canada to a 0-0 and edging co-hosts Australia 3-2.

Critics concerned about my family but don’t pay my children’s school fees

Legendary Nigerian musician, Innocent Ujah Idibia, aka 2Baba, has berated Nigerians for being overly concerned about his family.

The African Queen crooner admitted that inasmuch as he pretends to have grown a thick skin to Nigerians’ criticisms of his family over the years, he still gets hurt sometimes.

The father of seven lamented that Nigerians who insinuated he is a deadbeat dad to his children have never volunteered to pay the school fees of any of them.

2Baba stated this while appearing in the latest episode of the Afrobeats podcast hosted by British-Nigerian media personality, Adesope Olajide.

He said, “Many people talk about kids, fatherhood, motherhood, all that whole circle. Many people talk about it with public opinion type of thinking. But it’s deeper than that. There’s nobody that has the exact blueprint for this thing.

“The basic truth of the whole matter is the connection with you and your little ones [children]. There is so many different ways to find it. There’s no one rule or one particular way.

“I speak to my kinds like say they be my mates. I don’t boss them around. I talk to them the way I talk to my friends and mom.

“I get a lot of jabs [trolling]. I got a lot of people that say stuff about me. People have trolled me severally on social media. And, sometimes it hurts. Sometimes some people will just go on social media to say rubbish. It’s just like terrorists bombing innocent people.

“And I will start wondering how till today, none of those critics the way they are concerned about my family come to assist in paying my children’s school fees. Not even a single soul.”

DAILY POST recalls that 2Baba married one of his three baby mamas, actress Annie Macaulay in a private ceremony in 2012.

The marriage has been trailed by scandals in recent years with Annie accusing the 2Baba’s first baby mama, Pero Adeniyi of still having a secret affair with the singer.

Also there have been rumours of the singer impregnating another woman and being a deadbeat dad to some of his children.

However, 2Baba has since debunked all the rumours.

African Union suspends Niger, demands restoration of constitutional order

By Deborah Tolu-Kolawole

The African Union on Tuesday suspended Niger from all of its institutions and activities following last month’s coup “until the effective restoration of constitutional order.”

In a communique issued on Tuesday, the bloc noted that its decision to suspend Niger followed the failure of the military junta to hand over power to the democratically elected President, Mohammed Bazoum.

“The AU decides, in line with the relevant AU instruments, in particular, the AU Constitutive Act, the Protocol Relating to the Establishment of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union and the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, to immediately suspend the participation of the Republic of Niger from all activities of the AU and its Organs and institutions until the effective restoration of constitutional order in the country.

“The AU in this regard, calls upon all Member States of the AU and the international community including bilateral and multilateral partners, at large to reject this unconstitutional change of government and to refrain from any action likely to grant legitimacy to the illegal regime in Niger.”

The AU also commended the efforts of the Economic Community of West African States in its efforts to ensure a return to democratic rule in Niger.

“The AU commends the efforts of ECOWAS under the leadership of H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and calls on AU Member States to fully implement the sanctions imposed by ECOWAS and endorsed by the PSC and requests the Commission, in consultation with ECOWAS, to regularly inform the Council on the progress being made on the implementation of the imposed sanctions.”

Arsenal's best and worst-case Champions League draw scenarios as group stage pots confirmed

Arsenal will discover their Champions League opponents on August 31 when the group stage draw is made, but what would be the best and worst-case scenario for Mikel Arteta's side?

Arsenal are back in the UEFA Champions League for the first time since the 2016/17 season.

There's plenty to look forward to from an Arsenal perspective in the next two weeks, but perhaps nothing more so than the Champions League group stage draw which takes place from 5pm UK time on Thursday, August 31 at the Grimaldi Forum in Monaco.

Back at Europe's top table for the first time since the 2016/17 season, Mikel Arteta's primary target will surely be to ensure the Gunners qualify for the knockout round. However, it certainly won't be easy for them given the teams they can potentially come up against in the group stage.

As a result of finishing second in the Premier League and thanks in part to a bit of luck with regard to the coefficient rankings, Arsenal are in Pot 2 for the Champions League draw. This means they can be paired with Sevilla, Barcelona, Napoli, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica or Feyenoord from Pot 1.

Shakhtar Donetsk, Red Bull Salzburg, AC Milan, Lazio, Red Star Belgrade are the options from Pot 3 with Real Sociedad and Celtic potentially joining them after the play-off round whilst Pot 4, at the moment, contains Union Berlin and Lens as the two teams the Gunners can face.

So with all that in mind and as things currently stand, what would represent the best-case and worst-case outcome for Arsenal when the Champions League group stage draw is made? football.london takes a look.

Best case: Feyenoord, Arsenal, Rangers, Antwerp

There is always the argument that easy games in the Champions League group stage simply do not exist and whilst that might be true, Feyenoord and Benfica are perhaps the two teams Arsenal would prefer to be paired with from Pot 1 when looking at the rest of the field.

Particularly the former who are not only the lowest-ranked team in Pot 1 but have had a slow start to the defence of their Eredivisie title by drawing 0-0 at home to Fortuna Sittard in their first game of the new season before fighting back from 2-0 down to earn a point away to Sparta Rotterdam on Sunday.

From Pot 3, if Rangers overcome PSV Eindhoven in the play-off round once again, then they might be the pick for many Arsenal supporters especially as the Scottish giants don't have a great record in the competition and finished bottom of their group last season with a goal difference of -20.

Finally, the winners of the Antwerp vs AEK Athens play-off tie could be ideal opposition for Arsenal from Pot 4 as would Bundesliga side Union Berlin who are making their debut in the Champions League this season or Norwegian outfit Molde if they manage to qualify.

Worst-case: Bayern Munich, Arsenal, AC Milan, Galatasaray

The last time Arsenal played a Champions League fixture they lost 5-1 at home to Bayern Munich. That was the second leg of a round of 16 tie which meant the aggregate score was 10-2 in favour of the reigning champions of Germany and therefore will probably be the team in Pot 1 to avoid.

Then there's the Harry Kane factor. The England captain is Bayern's new number nine after joining from Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth in excess of £86million and his goalscoring record against Arsenal - 14 in 19 appearances across all competitions - makes him an immediate threat to any hopes Arteta has of reaching the round of 16 and avoiding a return to the Europa League.

With regard to Pot 3, teams will want to avoid drawing AC Milan. The Rossoneri reached the semi-final last season and despite losing Sandro Tonali to Newcastle United this summer, they've retained Rafael Leao, Mike Maignan and Olivier Giroud whilst also bolstering the squad by signing Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Yunus Musah - who Gunners fans will be very familiar with - and Samuel Chukwueze.

Pot 4 will become a lot clearer after the play-off round as Union Berlin and Lens are the only teams in there at the moment that Arsenal can face. With that said, if Galatasaray overcome Molde then perhaps they will be the ones to avoid as they would be a tricky opponent considering they can call upon the likes of Wilfried Zaha, Mauro Icardi, Hakim Ziyech, Dries Mertens and Lucas Torreira.
