The recent tweet by Daniel Bwala on his verified Twitter page has generated a lot of reactions from his fans and numerous followers on the social media platform.

Arsenal Battle Manchester United And Liverpool To Sign Chelsea Star In Summer

Premier League table toppers, Arsenal has reportedly joined Liverpool and Manchester United in the pursuit of Mason Mount, who is a contract rebel at Chelsea.

The 22-year-old midfielder’s current contract with the Blues expires in 2024, but negotiations for a new deal have stalled.

As a result, Mount is expected to leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season, opening up an opportunity for other top clubs to secure his services.

Despite Mount’s recent dip in form, a number of clubs have expressed interest in signing the England international.

Liverpool and Manchester United are among the clubs that have already shown their interest in acquiring the midfielder.

Now, according to reports from Goal, Arsenal has entered the race for Mount’s signature as they look to strengthen their squad in the upcoming summer transfer window.

As the Premier League leaders, Arsenal will undoubtedly be a tempting prospect for Mount, who would likely relish the opportunity to play for one of the biggest clubs in the country.

However, it remains to be seen which club Mount will ultimately choose, and fans of all three clubs will be eager to hear updates on the ongoing transfer saga.

As Arsenal gear up for a return to the Champions League and another possible Premier League title challenge, manager Mikel Arteta is looking to add some fresh talent to his squad.

While West Ham midfielder Declan Rice is currently the Gunners’ top target, Chelsea contract rebel Mason Mount has also caught their eye.

However, it’s worth noting that the Blues are unlikely to let Mount go easily, especially to a direct rival. With Todd Boehly’s recent £600m spending spree, Chelsea are under pressure to trim their squad and make some sales.

Despite the situation, former Arsenal star Paul Merson believes that it would be a massive mistake for Chelsea to sell their academy graduate.

In Merson’s opinion, Mount is one of Chelsea’s best players, and letting him go would be a significant loss for the club. Although the midfielder’s form has dipped recently, he remains a valuable asset to the Blues.

Chelsea currently sit in the bottom half of the Premier League table, and their recent exit from Europe at the hands of Real Madrid has added to their woes.

The team will have a weekend off before their next match against west London rivals Brentford on Wednesday night.

As the summer transfer window approaches, the future of Mason Mount will undoubtedly be a hot topic for discussion among football fans and pundits alike

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has donated 100 hectares of land to the Nigeria Peace Corps ( NPC) for the construction of South-West Zonal Training School.

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has donated 100 hectares of land to the Nigeria Peace Corps ( NPC) for the construction of South-West Zonal Training School.

The monarch said this at his palace during a familiarisation visit by the Corp’s Commandant General of NPC, Dr Mustapha Abubakar, on Friday in Ife, Osun State.

According to him, the land is situated along Ilesa road, Abayagani, Ile-Ife.

He said that the role of Nigeria Peace Corps nationwide could not be overemphasised, particularly with the trend of kidnapping, banditry and other insecurity threats.

He said that the corps must continue to demonstrate commitment aimed at making society safe and peaceful for citizens to live and stay .

The monarch further said that his love for the corps warranted the need for the gift to enable them to position their training ground for the southwest zone.

Ogunwusi thanked the corps for making him grand patron and promised not to let them down in all areas where his attention is needed.

“I have decided to support you in providing vehicles for easy movement in the zone and also provision of housing for officers and the 100 hectares of land.

Chelsea stars 'face 30 per cent wage cut' but Roman Abramovich has caused big headache

Chelsea players who have been signed or agreed new deals since the Boehly-Clearlake Capital owners took over will reportedly face a hefty 'pay cut of up to 30 per cent' due to a clause introduced into their contracts. It's been an eventful first season at Stamford Bridge for Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital with more than £600million spent on new signings while two managers have also been sacked.

This year's Champions League campaign was their final shot at redeeming what has been a disastrous season, but they were unable to turn things around against Real Madrid. But not only does that ensure Chelsea won't be playing Champions League football next season, it may also cause some issues in the playing squad.

According to the Telegraph, Chelsea's new owners introduced a 'Champions League reduction clause' into contracts signed under their stewardship. The club have made 12 permanent signings over the past year while several players have also put pen to paper on new contracts such as Reece James, Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva.

The report indicates that those players will now face a wage cut of up to 30 per cent after the club failed to qualify for next year's Champions League. However, the reduction clause reportedly won't affect any player currently on a contract signed during Roman Abramovich's era.

The likes of N'Golo Kante and Mason Mount have been in negotiations with Chelsea over a new deal, but no breakthrough has been made yet. The report adds that those players looking for contract extensions will 'have to agree to the Champions League clause' in their new deals.

It potentially creates a sticking point in contract negotiations for Chelsea with players unlikely to accept such a huge pay cut. No such clause was in place during Abramovich's reign, although they only failed to finish inside the top four on a handful of occasions.

It's the first time since 2018 that Chelsea will not be competing in the Champions League, when they went on to win the Europa League. The main focus for interim boss Frank Lampard will be to avoid the club dropping further down the table.

They currently sit 11th and face a challenge on their hands to qualify for either the Europa League or Europa Conference League. They're currently on course for their worst finish in the Premier League since 1996, when they ended up 11th.

Chelsea now have a week to prepare for their next Premier League match against Brentford on April 26 before a difficult test away to title contenders Arsenal on May 2.

Binani: Peter Obi Makes Bold Statement On ‘Stolen Mandate’ After Fintiri Was Declared Winner

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has reiterated his decision to reclaim his’stolen mandate’ in the aftermath of the contentious Adamawa gubernatorial election.

Recall that the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Hudu Yunusa Ari, declared Aisha Binani the winner of the governorship election on Sunday while the results of the supplementary election were still being collated.

However, Ari’s declaration was overturned by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Many Nigerians strongly condemned the move, calling it an illegal and stolen mandate.

In a late-night Twitter post, Peter Obi, who is challenging President-elect Bola Tinubu’s victory in court, urged Nigerians to remain calm, emphasizing that he will never give up on the journey of reclaiming the mandate for a new Nigeria.

According to the former governor of Anambra State, he never expected the road to a new Nigeria to be easy, but he will remain law-abiding.

He reiterated his commitment to building a Nigeria that benefits all Nigerians, saying the struggle to reclaim the mandate is about millions of Nigerians, not him.

He said;

I encourage Nigerians to remain calm and steadfast in the journey to reclaiming their mandate of a New Nigeria. I will never give up on this journey until victory is achieved.

I never expected the journey to a New Nigeria to be an easy one. The forces, who had over the years, lived off the old order, are bound to fight back, as is being experienced now.

If they come at us through land, air and sea, we will respond to them through land, air and sea but, we will remain law abiding and will never give up on the nation. We are on the right path and we will remain committed to the course.

I reiterate my commitment to building a Nigeria that will be beneficial to every Nigerian. The struggle to reclaim this mandate is not about me as a person but, about millions of Nigerians who placed their trust in me through their votes.

I encourage Nigerians to remain calm and steadfast in the journey to reclaiming their mandate of a New Nigeria. I will never give up on this journey until victory is achieved.

What Arsene Wenger Told Mikel Arteta Ahead of Manchester City vs Arsenal Clash

Former Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger has backed current manager Mikel Arteta to win the Premier League and beat Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium when both sides meet next week.

Arsene Wenger led Arsenal to their last Premier League title in 2004 and many observers believe that the Gunners stand a good chance of ending their nearly 20 years wait to secure the win.

However, Arteta boys have failed to win all three points from winning positions in their last two games, a situation which has seen Manchester City close the gap on their title rivals this season.

Wenger however believes that the Gunners are only experiencing a blip and he is confident the team can win the title and even beat the reigning champions on their home ground.

”Arsenal and these players have not been in the position to win the league before.

”Hopefully, they win it this year and next year it will be easier. But now, when you have never won it, there will be a moment in the season when the tension comes in.

‘’When you start thinking more about the need to win than the process and how to play, it gets difficult. I felt that at Arsenal when I was there too,” Wenger said.

Wenger insists City are not the favourite to win the league, he said:

“No, no, no. I would say Arsenal still [will win the title].

‘What you want in this position is to have things in your hand. If Arsenal wins their games, they win the league so that’s an ideal position with a few games to go.

“Of course, Man City have an opportunity when they play Arsenal and that could be the decider in the championship.

“I still fancy Arsenal, I’m not completely objective here, but I do. We will also have to see how much the Champions League takes out of Man City.”

Frank Lampard hands 22-year-old first Chelsea Champions League start: Predicted XI vs Real Madrid

Frank Lampard will be forced to take some risks if Chelsea are to turnaround their 2-0 deficit against Real Madrid.

A 3-5-2 system at the Bernabeu simply didn’t work, with a front two who lyooked like they’d never even played together up front.

The defeat against Brighton could have convinced the manager that certain players deserve a chance in the last-chance match.

Here’s The Chelsea Chronicle’s predicted XI for the Champions League quarter-final tomorrow.

GK and Defence

Kepa Arrizabalaga covered himself in glory despite the result on Saturday, and will start in goal tomorrow night.

In a back three, Wesley Fofana will continue on the right despite his struggles against Vincius Jr last week.

A rest against Brighton will allow Thiago Silva to return fresh to marshal the backline at Stamford Bridge.

No Kalidou Koulibaly will call Trevoh Chalobah into the starting side, in a position that would look perfect for Benoit Badiashile to fill if he was fit.

Midfield

Reece James will be on the right of a back five/midfield four, and attacking will be imperative for him following Ben Chilwell’s red card.

In the middle, Enzo Fernandez will continue his record of starting every single game since joining the club.

He will be partnered by N’golo Kante, who will be well-rested after being left out against Brighton.

With Chilwell not available after his sending off, it will be a huge opportunity for Marc Cucurella to turn things around with the Chelsea fans.

Attack

Joao Felix will be handed another chance to impress as a roaming member of the attack.

Kai Havertz will return after missing the game at the weekend with a slight injury.

The frontline will be complete with Mykhailo Mudryk, who will be making his first start in the Champions League for Chelsea.

Why Tinubu can never be like Buhari in style of governance - Fashola

Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola on Sunday night   the president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu will be clearly different from President Muhammadu Buhari in running his government.

Fashola, who spoke in an interview on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics, said Tinubu is very detailed and micro-manages more than Buhari.

He was asked of his experience working with Tinubu as Chief of Staff in Lagos and he said in terms of controlling his schedules, it was a tough task because he had day and night schedules.

“For those who are going to work with him, let me warn them, he is very nocturnal and I hope he changes, so he will wake you up, he does his best work in the dead of the night, unless you can push back and claim your space at night, he will encroach it, he is very detailed, he micro-manages, more than president Buhari,” he said.

He then drew a comparison between Tinubu and Buhari using two football coaches.

“Imagine there are two football coaches, Buhari is the type of president, football coach that will prepare his team and go and sit in the coaches dug and watched them play for 90 minutes, he trust them to do the job and believe there is nothing he can do.

“Asiwaju will be that kind of coach playing the game with them like Mourinho. These are the two differences you will see between them. One prepares, one delegates completely and one delegates and stays with you and each one has his strength,” he explained.

Arsenal need ‘luck’ to hold off Man City – Arteta

Mikel Arteta says Arsenal will need “luck in the right moments” if they are going to finish as Premier League champions above rampant Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s team, who host struggling Leicester on Saturday, could close the gap at the top of the table to just three points before leaders Arsenal kick off at West Ham the following day.

The Gunners squandered a 2-0 lead at Liverpool at Anfield last week to draw 2-2, with City now favourites to be crowned champions for the fifth time in six years.

“You need luck in the right moments,” Arteta said at his pre-match press conference on Friday.

“It’s another part of this sport — sometimes it’s about inches and those inches need to go your way.”

Arteta’s men can focus entirely on chasing their first Premier League title since 2004, while City also have an FA Cup semi-final next week against Sheffield United and one foot in the last four of the Champions League.

Arsenal and City meet at the Etihad Stadium on April 26 in a pivotal moment in the title race.

Asked if he envisioned fighting for the title at the start of the season, Arteta said “yes”.

“You go day by day,” he said. “There is so much that happens every single day, every month at a football club.

“The aim when I took the job was to bring the club back to where it belongs, fighting for and being around every single trophy that it is possible (to win) at the highest level. That’s what we are trying to do.”

He added: “We are happy with where we are. Now we have to finish the job and demand an extra bit from everybody.”

Arteta admitted goal difference could be a key factor in the title race — the Gunners have a goal difference of plus 43, compared with City’s plus 48.

“We think about every possibility,” he said. “Obviously, we want to win matches first and earn the right to win them, and then we want to score as many goals as possible, but we have to be open to everything and any possibility.”

Arsenal will again be without William Saliba against West Ham as the France defender continues to recover from a back problem, but forward Eddie Nketiah is available for selection.

Europa League: Man United throw away two-goal lead, draw with Sevilla

(Photo by Darren Staples / AFP)

Two late own goals gave Manchester United work to do to reach the Europa League semi-finals as Sevilla salvaged a 2-2 draw from the first leg of their quarter-final tie at Old Trafford on Thursday.

United appeared to be cruising to victory through two goals from Marcel Sabitzer inside the opening 21 minutes.

But the loss of centre-backs Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez to injury proved costly as Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire deflected balls into their own net in the final six minutes plus stoppage time.

United will also have to cope without Bruno Fernandes for the second leg on April 20 after he picked up a yellow card that leads to a suspension.

The home side were without 28-goal top scorer Marcus Rashford due to injury, but still made light work of the Spaniards before half-time as Sabitzer struck twice.

The Austrian midfielder had scored only once for United in 12 previous appearances, but twice pierced through the Sevilla defence with well-timed runs and composed finishes.

Anthony Martial’s return for injury is a timely boost for Erik ten Hag with Rashford set to be sidelined for a few weeks.

The Frenchman has been a peripheral figure since the Dutchman took charge, but Ten Hag said on the eve of the game that his side play their best football with Martial up front.

So it proved in the opening quarter as Martial had a hand in both of Sabitzer’s goals.

Martial’s hold-up play eventually saw the ball worked to Fernandes, who fired a ball into Sabitzer’s feet and the on-loan Bayern Munich midfielder coolly slotted past Bono

Just a few moments later Sabitzer had his second. Martial was this time the creator with a perfect pass through for Sabitzer to again leave Bono in the Sevilla goal with no chance.

Casemiro’s first appearance for nearly a month due to a four-game Premier League ban added authority to the United midfield and the Brazilian should have marked the occasion with a goal after more good approach play by Martial.

Sevilla are fighting a relegation battle in La Liga and it showed until a late flurry as they only briefly threatened to bring the tie to life.

Tanguy Nianzou’s powerful header in first-half stoppage time was saved by David De Gea before Varane completed the clearance off the line.

Antony came closest to adding to United’s lead in the second half when the winger struck the inside of the post with Fernandes begging for a pass in a better position.

Malacia should also have done better when teed up by Wout Weghorst in acres of space inside the Sevilla box.

Ten Hag showed his thoughts were already turning to a trip to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Sunday as Fernandes and Martial made way in the final half-hour.

That decision proved costly as Malacia dallied to allow Jesus Navas to pounce inside the United box, the former Manchester City winger’s cross deflecting off the Dutch left-back to wrong-foot De Gea.

De Gea then produced a brilliant save to deny Youssef En-Nesyri an equaliser.

But United’s reprieve only lasted seconds as another En-Nesyri header cannoned off Maguire and into the net in the 92nd minute.

Feyenoord eye Europa League semis after beating Roma

Feyenoord took a step towards the Europa League semi-finals on Thursday with a 1-0 win over Roma in the first leg of the two teams’ last eight clash.

Netherlands midfielder Mats Wieffer gave Eredivisie leaders Feyenoord a slender lead to take to Rome with a sumptuous volley nine minutes after the break at Rotterdam’s De Kuip stadium.

The 23-year-old’s third goal of the season was just enough for the Dutch outfit to see off Roma in a rematch of last season’s Conference League final which was won by the Italians.

Wieffer was almost the villain of the piece after being penalised for handball and giving Roma a penalty just before the break which Lorenzo Pellegrini smashed off the post.

Jose Mourinho’s side can consider themselves unlucky not to have got something from the game as Roger Ibanez’s header was headed onto the bar in the 63rd minute by Oussama Idrissi, the man who set up Wieffer’s winner.

Roma, who sit third in Serie A, will have the chance to overturn the deficit when the teams meet again in the Italian capital next Thursday.

They might have to be without forwards Tammy Abraham and Paulo Dybala who were both substituted with injuries, a worry also for their fight for a place in next season’s Champions League.

Banana Island building collapse: No casualty recorded, 25 rescued – Lagos govt

…intensifies probe into incident

…Sanwo-Olu stops further devt on Banana Island

By Olasunkanqmi Akoni

The Lagos State Government has said nobody died in the collapse of a seven-storey building under construction on Banana Island, Ikoyi on Wednesday evening.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, stated this while giving an update on the incident.

Omotoso added that the state government has launched an intensified probe into the collapse following a directive by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

According to the commissioner, “Nobody died in the incident, which occurred on Wednesday, as of the time of this report. Twenty-five people were rescued from the site.

“Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, scanned the building with a high-precision 3-D Laser Imagery System for life and found no evidence of anyone trapped in the rubble.

“A roll call has also been done by the site supervisors, with everyone accounted for.

“LASEMA has continued with the excavation of the site, using the architectural designs. The site has also been divided into quadrants for a painstaking search and rescue operation.

“Presently, quadrants 2 and 3 have been levelled to ground zero, having completed the search operation. Quadrants 1 and 4 are ongoing.

“Physical Planning and Urban Development Commissioner Bamgbose-Martins, an Engineer and Special Duties Special Adviser, Mobolaji Ogunlende, are coordinating the operations.

“LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu is leading the operations.

“Commissioner for Health Prof. Akin Abayomi has visited the site and hospitals where victims of the incident were admitted.

“Of the 25 persons rescued by  LASEMA, 16 with moderate injuries were admitted at General Hospital, Odan, Lagos Island and Police Hospital Falomo for treatment and care.

“Nine others with minor injuries, such as bruises, were treated and discharged at the site by Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS).

“Of the 16 persons on admission, 11 were taken to Police Hospital Falomo. Eight of the 11 persons have been treated and discharged. Some are required to come for daily follow-up and management. Three with various injuries, including blunt traumatic chest injury, knee injuries, deep lacerations and others, are on admission.”

At the General Hospital Odan, Lagos Island, it was gathered that there are five patients with more serious injuries.

“The State Government, as a matter of policy, will be responsible for the emergency treatment and care, including the medical bills of the victims on admission.

“It will also provide post-trauma counselling support and care for all victims through the Lagos MiND programme (Mental Health in Development) – a free mental health counselling and support service provided by the Ministry of Health,” Omotoso stated.

Preliminary investigations, according to him, have shown that the incident occurred during concrete casting.

Sanwo-Olu stops further development on Banana Island

Consequently, Omotoso added,  “Mr. Governor has directed that all developments on Banana Island be placed on hold, subject to a comprehensive audit by the officials of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA).

“This is to determine how many buildings are being constructed without approval from the Lagos State Government; and

“If all approved buildings are being built in line with the approval limits provided.

“This exercise will be extended to other estates and gated communities.”

According to the state government, the building which was hitherto sealed by government officials for not having the approval to commence construction, “the developers continued to build, hiding under the security of their estate/gated community.”

Eyewitness recount

Eyewitnesses, who spoke with newsmen under condition of anonymity, said one of the concrete mixer trucks rammed into some load-bearing columns of the building, causing a loud bang and leading to the immediate collapse.

Real Madrid beat Chelsea in first leg of quarter-final

Karim Benzema tapped in to give Carlo Ancelotti’s side the lead in the Spanish capital with just 20 minutes on the clock.

Things got worse for Chelsea as Ben Chilwell was dismissed for dragging down Rodrygo who was through on goal.

Marco Asensio came off the bench to give Real Madrid a TWO goal advantage going into the second leg at Stamford Bridge.

Presidential poll: APC, PDP fight over validity of outcome

By John Alechen Ikechukwu Nnochiri & Omeiza Ajayi,ABUJA
The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, and main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday, disagreed fiercely over the outcome of the 2023 presidential poll.
While the PDP described the victory of the APC and President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as an electoral heist that must not be allowed to stand, the APC countered that its presidential flag bearer’s victory reflected the will of Nigerians.
The ruling party added that it did not supply the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System, BVAS, machines used for the conduct of the polls to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as alleged by PDP.
APC’s electoral victory must not stand — PDP PCC
The PDP Presidential Campaign Council, PCC, said for Nigeria to regain its pride of place in the comity of nations, the results of the 2023 presidential election as announced by the INEC must not be allowed to stand.
Director, of Planning and Strategy of the PDP PCC, Don Pedro Obaseki, said this at a media chat in Abuja, yesterday.
He said that the brazen manner in which the last election was rigged made it near impossible for any serious nation to take Nigeria seriously as far as democracy and the rule of law were concerned.
Obaseki said: “We have gone through a round of the most dastardly skewed election in the history of this country, I don’t want to say since the return to democracy. It is an accepted fact that this election was indeed brazenly rigged beyond all known ethics and ramifications.
“However, what is a little bit disturbing in the media space, particularly in the social media space, is that the election was stolen. But from whom was it stolen?
“There must be a frontline, primary victim of the theft. The first-degree victim of that is my party and presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
Worst election since 1960
“Secondly, we are aware that in Nigeria since 1960 at independence and since we became a Republic in 1963, no court has upturned even the most brazen election before now. All those elections pale in comparison to what befell Nigerians in 2023.”
The PDP campaign director further explained that it is important that the Nigerian judiciary be put on notice that the essence of the Nigerian state is at stake. As such, whatever decision the Justices of the Supreme Court and all those involved in the process of adjudication in this electoral matter must take into account the spirit and the letter of the constitution.
Judiciary must save Nigeria
He further said: “The onus lies upon them to look at both the spirit and letters of the law and the very marginalized feelings of every Nigerian and do what is right and correct in the public domain so as to save this country and the sanctity of our common wealth.
“They must understand that the 2023 presidential election tribunal proceeding is not just the petitioner and the respondent that are on trial. It is the Nigerian judiciary that is on trial.
Judicary on trial
“This is why I called my friends (in the media) as those who are the Fourth Estate of the Realm and those who must be the forebearers of the conscience of this country so that we begin to talk and not be dwarfed in the noise of the theft and the real election results not the ones that Mahmood Yakubu announced.
“And the implications therefrom of the commission’s official position that has been taken by Mahmood Yakubu in pronouncing the APC presidential flag bearer the winner of the election.
“I was in the very fulcrum, the very engine room. I was in charge of strategy, from drafting, to curating and monitoring of the elections from all the 176,000 plus polling units across the country.
“I know who won not only because the person is my principal but because the truth must be told. We can no longer continue in this blatant disregard of our people.”
Tinubu’s victory reflects the will of Nigerians — APC
On its part, the APC tackled the PDP Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, accusing him of raising spurious and wild allegations in his bid to discredit the INEC.
The ruling party, in a fresh process it filed before the Presidential Election Petition Court, PEPC, sitting in Abuja, said there was no truth in Atiku’s allegation that its leadership was involved in the supply of BVAS machines that INEC deployed for the conduct of the general elections.
APC said it was not aware that INEC procured the BVAS machines from a company belonging to one of its members.
“That even if Senator Muhammed Sani Musa is a director of Actirate Technologies Limited, he has nothing to do with the operations and day-to-day activities of the company,” APC averred in a written statement on oath it filed to counter Atiku’s petition against its candidate and President-elect, Bola Tinubu. The party further dismissed Atiku’s claim that INEC compromised by awarding contract for the production of sensitive materials that were used for the general elections, to a company owned by one of its chieftains.
Even though it admitted that a firm linked to its governorship candidate in Adamawa State, Aisha Dalhatu, got the contract to supply electoral materials to INEC, the ruling party insisted that the said contract did not affect the outcome of the 2023 general elections.
“That I know that Binani Printing Press Limited had been involved in printing and supplies for several years before the 2023 election.
“That I know that Aisha Dalhatu, though a director in Binani Printing Press Limited, but only in a nominal sense as she was never involved in the day-to-day running and activities of the company.
“That there are other directors of Binani Printing Press Limited who are responsible for the day–to–day running of the company and have nothing to do with politics.
“That the award of the contract for the supply of electoral materials to be used for the 2023 election to Binani Printing Press Limited has nothing to do with Aisha Dalhatu who was the Gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress for Adamawa State for the 2023 general election.
“That I know that Binani Printing Press Limited is a separate and distant body from the person of Aisha Dalhatu.
“That the award of contracts of any kind matching supplies of materials by the 1st Respondent (INEC) always follows a due process that cannot be compromised.
“That the award of contracts for the supply of materials to Binani Printing Press Limited followed due process and was purely on merit.
“That I know as a fact that Binani Printing Press Limited employs global best practices in all its operations matching duty of confidentiality to its numerous clients, including the 1st respondent.
“That the engagement of Binani Printing Press Limited by the 1st respondent was based on competence and experience. “That I know that the engagement of both Binani Printing Press Limited and Actirate Technologies Limited by the 1st Respondent did not in any way affect the conduct of the election of 25th February, 2023 either in favour of the 2nd and 3rd Respondents or any political party at all.
“That it is not true that the 3rd Respondent’s leadership were involved in the supply of BVAS and all or any electoral materials to the 1st respondent for the election of the 25th February 2023,” APC added.
While praying the court to dismiss Atiku’s petition, the APC argued that the presidential election that was won by its candidate, Tinubu, “met all the requirements of a credible election and reflected the will of the Nigerian electorate”.
It said the election was adjudged by independent and unbiased observers to be “credible and an assurance that Nigeria is on the path to its democratic glory”.
It told the court that no reliable observer, “except those sponsored by the petitioners and their collaborators, condemned the election due to the alleged failure to electronically transmit and upload the results in real-time as wildly alleged by the petitioners, when the Electoral Act and the Regulation and Guidelines for the conduct of the election have not made provisions for same”.
Besides, APC contended that the court has no jurisdiction to adjudicate on allegations that Atiku and the PDP raised in their petition, which it said lacked necessary facts or particulars as required by Paragraph 4(1)(d) of the Rules of Procedure for election petition (First Schedule to the Electoral Act, 2022).
Tinubu’s academic qualifications
On the issue of qualification, the APC listed Tinubu’s academic certificates as part of the documents it will enter into evidence before the court, saying Atiku’s contention was “vague, bare and meaningless as having the constitutional threshold is not part of the requirement to contest an election”.
It said Atiku’s petition was devoid of necessary particulars/information to support allegations of corrupt practices, violence and non-compliance with provisions of the Electoral Act.
“The 2nd Respondent (Tinubu) was duly elected by a majority of the lawful votes cast at the presidential election held on 25th February 2023 and scored the highest number of votes as well as one-quarter of lawful votes at the election in each of at least two-thirds of all the states in the Federation.
“Respondent denies the allegation contained in paragraph 33 of the petition that the 1st Respondent (INEC) employed a third-party device or any device at all for the purpose of intercepting, quarantining, warehousing and filtering election results before releasing same to the IRev portal. The Petitioners are put to the strictest proof of the allegations.
“Respondent denies paragraphs 34 of the Petition and avers further that the 1st Respondent complied with the prescribed procedure for the election and deployment of technology in respect thereof. The Petitioners are put to the strictest proof of the averments therein.
“It is not correct that the glitch or technical issue disclosed by the 1st Respondent was a bypass to tilt and switch the results of the Presidential Election in favour of the 2nd and 3rd Respondents as nothing of such happened;
“With specific reference to paragraph 38 alleging that INEC must electronically transmit the result from pooling units, Respondent states and will show that in keeping with discretion given to INEC by the Electoral Act, 2022 as to mode of transfer or delivery of election results from polling units to the Registration Areas (ward) collation centre, INEC expressly notified all political parties and the general public three clear days to the 25th February 2023 presidential election that raw votes would not be electronically transmitted as would have been the case under Paragraph 38 (i) of the Electoral Regulations and Guidelines, 2022 and besides, no timeline or deadline was given within which to transmit the result. The Respondent plead the press release by the chairman of the 1st Respondent.
“The 1st Respondent did not use any device manager to quarantine results from the polling unit prior to transmission to its portal and there was no room as a matter of fact, the 1st Respondent did not upload any wrong result.
“Respondent shall further contend during the hearing of this Petition that the Petitioner’s claim of being winner of the election is a direct violation of human sensibilities as the agitation in paragraph 52 of the Petition that the entire presidential election of 25 February 2022 is unlawful, illegal, wrongful, null, void and same is inconsistent with the claim that the Petitioners ought to be returned as winners of the election”.
More so, the APC told the court that contrary to Atiku’s claim in his petition, it was not a mandatory requirement of the Constitution for a candidate to score twenty-five per cent of the votes cast in the Federal Capital Territory to be declared elected as President.
“It is sufficient if a candidate for election as President scores the highest number of votes cast at the election and has not less than one-quarter of the votes cast at the election in at least two-thirds of all the States in the Federation as is the case in the instant election.
“A candidate who scored the majority of the votes cast at a Presidential Election and secured one-quarter of the votes cast at the election in at least two-thirds of all the States in the Federation, need NOT obtained twenty-five per cent of the votes cast in the FCT to be entitled to be declared winner of the election.
“The inclusion or addition of the FCT, Abuja, by the provision of the Constitution, did not attach special or unique condition or recognition to the Federal Capital Territory but to give Federal Capital Territory parallel recognition with other states of the Federation.
“The 2nd Respondent having scored the highest number of majority of lawful votes at the said election and satisfied the constitutional threshold, there is no need for a runoff election simply because 2nd Respondent did not poll up to 25% of the votes cast in FCT as that would be invalidating the votes of all the electorates looking for fresh votes all over 36 states again”, APC added.
Whipping up sentiments won’t help PDP’s case –APC PCC
In its response to the PDP PCC’s attack on its victory, the Presidential Campaign Council PCC of the APC counselled the PDP to refrain from using underhand tactics in its lame attempt to prove an electoral heist in the last Presidential election. Gideon Obhakhan, a former Commissioner for Education in Edo State, and Secretary, Public Affairs Directorate at the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council gave the charge on Wednesday in a chat with Vanguard.
The APC PCC official said: “In every election, a winner must emerge. The 2022 Electoral Act is clear regarding what any political party or candidate must do if they are not satisfied with the results or the processes leading to the official declaration of such results.
“Any attempt to threaten the Judiciary or engage in emotional blackmail tactics in order to whip up sentiments, will resort to an exercise in futility.
“Our President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was massively voted for by Nigerians and INEC has performed its role judiciously by declaring a winner in accordance with the electoral laws and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“I will like to use this opportunity to admonish aggrieved parties to follow the laid down procedures to challenge the outcome of the election. Having already gone to court, it is unnecessary to resort to the court of public opinion which will yield no positive result whatsoever. We must join hands to build this nation rather than take any path that will lead to anarchy.”

Premier League matches to pause for fasting Muslim players during Ramadan

By Shamoon Hafez

Tuesday's Premier League matches will briefly be paused for Muslim players who have been fasting during Ramadan.

If clubs have requested a stoppage before the game, the referee will signal for a break, allowing Muslim players to eat and drink at pitchside.

Everton's game against Tottenham was stopped in the 26th minute to allow players that had been fasting during the day to take on energy supplements.

Three Muslim players were in action for Sean Dyche's side at Goodison Park.

Although sunset was before kick-off, allowing players to break their fast, a drinks break was pre-agreed with the referee when both teams - including Toffees trio Abdoulaye Doucoure, Amadou Onana and Idrissa Gueye - came to the side of the pitch to take on fluids.

Play does not stop while matches are in mid-flow, but at the earliest convenient moment during a goal-kick, free-kick or throw-in.

Teams and match officials will discuss beforehand whether a pause is required and an approximate time for the stoppage will be agreed.

With the 19:45 BST kick-offs on Tuesday coming close to sunset, an agreement might be reached to delay the start by a couple of minutes to allow players to break their fast, which was the case in Friday's Championship game between Burnley and Sunderland.

As a Muslim I feel very accepted in England - Doucoure

In the evening games, Nampalys Mendy could come up against Boubacar Kamara when Leicester host Aston Villa, while Muslim players may also be involved in the Bournemouth v Brighton and Leeds v Nottingham Forest matches.

Chelsea's game against Liverpool in London kicks off at 20:00, shortly after sunset on Tuesday.

Evening matches between Leeds and Liverpool on 17 April and Arsenal against Southampton four days later are the only other top-flight matches that kick off at 20:00 BST this Ramadan.

The Islamic calendar follows the lunar calendar, which means Ramadan starts about 10 days earlier each year. With the holy month now approaching the winter, breaks in play for fasting players will be a regular occurrence in the coming years.

Last month, Toffees midfielder Doucoure told BBC Sport he always "loves" Ramadan, adding: "I fast every day. I don't miss any days.

"Sometimes playing football has been hard because Ramadan has been in the summer and during pre-season.

"But I have always been lucky to practise Ramadan and there have never been problems with my physical condition - I am grateful for that."

Nantes player misses game because of fasting

Meanwhile, France's football federation (FFF) has told referees they must not pause matches to allow Muslim players to break their fast during Ramadan.

"Football does not take into account the political, religious, ideological, or syndical [trade unions] considerations of its actors," read an email to officials.

"It is up to all of the parties involved to make sure it is respected."

Nantes defender Jaouen Hadjam was absent for his side's 3-0 Ligue 1 defeat by Reims on Sunday because he did not want to break the Ramadan fast.

Nantes have six Muslim players observing Ramadan but 20-year-old Algeria international Hadjam is the only one to fast on matchdays.

"It's his choice, I respect it," said coach Antoine Kombouare. "But on matchday, you don't have to fast. It's very intense, you have to be ready. Those who fast aren't in the group - I don't want them to injure themselves.

"In the week, there are no worries for those who fast. I'm ready to support them."

Luke Shaw: Manchester United defender signs new four-year deal

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has signed a new four-year contract to keep him at the club until June 2027.

The 27-year-old will extend his stay at Old Trafford to more than a decade, after joining from Southampton in 2014.

Shaw has had an excellent season under manager Erik ten Hag, making 36 appearances in all competitions, scoring once and assisting six times.

"Nine years ago I signed for this amazing club, and I'm thrilled to be extending my stay," said Shaw.

"I've grown immensely since coming to Manchester all those years ago, both as a person and as a player; I know what is needed to succeed at a club like this.

"We're at the beginning of our journey under the manager and his coaching staff. We've been successful already this season, but we want much more. There's a great opportunity to create something special here, and I'm going to give everything to be part of that."

Shaw, who has played 249 games for Manchester United, was criticised by Jose Mourinho during his time as manager, with the Portuguese boss saying he had to coach him through a game against Everton and that "he has to grow up" and "has to mature".

Under Mourinho's replacement Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ten Hag, Shaw has become a regular fixture again and has played at left-back and centre-back this season.

"Luke is a massively important player to the squad and has grown into one of the best defenders in the world," said the club's football director John Murtough.

"He has been at the club for nearly a decade and understands the expectations for success, and the hard work, commitment and high standards required to achieve it.

"He has added leadership to his other outstanding abilities, and we all look forward to seeing him in a Manchester United shirt for years to come."

Shaw has 29 England caps and scored three times, including the opening goal in the Euro 2020 final against Italy.

We’re challenging Governor-elect’s temporary success in tribunal – Ganduje

By Bashir Bello

KANO – Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano State has said that they are challenging the victory of the Governor-elect, Abba Kabir Yusuf which he described as temporary success at the tribunal.

Ganduje dropped the hint to go to tribunal while speaking with newsmen shortly after a prayer session organized for the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his 71st birthday and victory.

The Governor fumed at the Governor-elect’s loan facility public advisory describing it as baseless, adding that he was starting on a wrong foot.

Demolition Advisory: Ganduje still in charge – Kano govt tells governor-elect

According to him, “It is a practical indication and a practical symbol that their leadership has no sense of direction because that kind of advisory is baseless.

“He is talking as if he is now the Governor of Kano State. And he is not yet the governor. We were praying for him to govern Kano well, but what we are telling you is we are taking this temporary success to the tribunal.

“And for somebody to start making such speeches, you can judge that he is starting with a very very wrong footing,” Ganduje said.

Recall that the Governor-elect, Yusuf had issued public advisory warning land developers to keep off and discontinue buildings on public lands around schools, grave yards, eid praying grounds among others noting that whoever act on a contrary does so on his or her own risk.

Recall also that the Governor-elect, Yusuf at the wake of Saturday morning issued another public advisory where he cautioned all subsisting and prospective lenders to the Kano State Government to desist from given the Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje administration loans saying his government won’t honour or pay back such loans coming after the March 18th election.

Reps Speakership: Why I’m backing Idris Wase – Osoba

By Omeiza Ajayi, Abuja

Former Governor Olusegun Osoba of of Ogun state, has justified why he is backing the incumbent Deputy Speaker, Ahmed Idris Wase for the speakership of the House of Representatives.

Wase got the endorsements during a trip to Lagos and Port Harcourt on Monday.

Osoba’s backing for Wase is coming ahead of the June inauguration of the 10th National Assembly.

The former governor, who said the north central deserves the speaker slot described Wase as his “experienced and beloved son.”

Osoba also described the deputy speaker as his beloved son whose zone, the north central, deserves the position of speaker.

He said, “This is your home. You are an experienced and beloved son of mine. North central has been very crucial in APC electoral victories.

“North central deserves to be speaker even by performance. Awo said: we must reward performance and allocation was based on performance in those days.

“So in the case of north central, that should be done; be rest assured. It will be zoned to north central and then we go into the next stage. Wase, you are my beloved son, I repeat.”

Recall that plots by the country’s main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party PDP to mobilize its members and other minority parties in the House of Representatives for relevance suffered a major setback on Monday following the decision of two of its leaders to support the ruling party.

Both the Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike and a former governor of Delta State, James Ibori have thrown their weight behind Wase.

These developments came on the heel of alliance talks between the PDP’s House of Representatives members and an aspirant for the speakership, Aliyu Betara on one hand, as well as the PDP and other minority parties on the other hand.

Sensing that his party, the ruling All Progressives Congress APC might zone the position of speaker outside his region, the north east, Betara was said to have opened talks with leading lights of the PDP to add their numbers to his handful of supporters ahead of the contest.

However, some influential leaders of the PDP, especially returning members of the House, had an alternative plan to join forces with other parties to outsmart the APC which expectedly, might go into the contest divided.

The number of opposition parties put together, is more than APC’s 162. The Peoples Democratic Party PDP has 102 seats; Labour Party LP, 34 seats; New Nigerian Peoples Party NNPP, 18 seats; All Progressives Grand Alliance APGA four seats while the Social Democratic Party SDP and African Democratic Congress ADC have two seats each.

This puts the membership of the opposition parties at 163, even as all the parties scramble for more seats in the April 15 supplementary polls which hold across 33 constituencies.

Ibori, while receiving the deputy speaker, said he has made up his mind to direct his supporters who are members of the House, to support and vote for Wase

Ibori said, “I am with you. I have done my checks on you and I am convinced you are well prepared for the job and I am happy you are here even though I have sent words to you through our Representatives that they should go with you. I wish you all the best.

“Don’t hesitate to come to me anytime you are in need of whatever thing that will enhance this project. I will help you speak to all my friends, as many as I have. Many are waiting to put the right things properly to make Nigeria the envy of Africa and the world. You are good to go, you are in that mood”, the former Delta governor told Wase and his team.

While welcoming Wase and his delegation to Government House, Port Harcourt, Wike reiterated his resolve to collaborate with the government at the centre.

“I have no apologies to make to anyone. I have said it severally that I will support your party at the national level.  You are an experienced person, our people will support you. You will stabilize the House and we need you. We will give necessary support and ensure your victory. Count on us”, he stated.
