Second deal between Arsenal and West Ham coming, with common ground found over unlikely goal machine

Mikel Arteta is keen to offload an Arsenal star David Moyes has plans for, with West Ham and the Gunners potentially set to do business for a second time, per a report.

The two clubs are poised to preside over a colossal transfer involving Declan Rice. West Ham have accepted Arsenal’s £105m (£100m plus £5m in add-ons) bid that will make the 24-year-old the most expensive British player of all time.

Combined with major moves for Jurrien Timber, Romeo Lavia and Kai Havertz, Arsenal’s summer spend could smash the £250m mark.

Unsurprisingly, an exit or two are now on the cards, with Granit Xhaka to finally be given the greenlight to join Bayer Leverkusen. Xhaka will return to Germany in a £13m deal that had been delayed by Arsenal until a direct replacement arrived.

Elsewhere, the i paper bring news of Arsenal left-back, Nuno Tavares, potentially trading places with Rice.

The Portuguese was an £8m signing from Benfica back in 2021, though struggled to cope defensively upon moving to the Premier League.

A loan spell with Marseille was sanctioned for the 2022/23 campaign and Tavares’ attacking instincts were allowed to thrive.

Indeed, when deployed primarily as a left wing-back, Tavares remarkably notched six goals in 31 Ligue 1 matches for Marseille.

Very few players provide that type of goals return from the backline. Tavares’ exploits prompted then-Marseille boss, Igor Tudor, to claim Tavares was “good enough to play for Barcelona”.

However, the i newspaper state Arsenal have earmarked Tavares as a player they want to cash in on to help offset their mammoth spending spree.

Handily enough, West Ham are understood to be sizing Tavares up, with manager David Moyes viewing the 23-year-old as stiff competition for the ageing Aaron Cresswell.

Just £8m will be enough to seal a deal, though every little helps and his wages would also be removed from the accounts.

While not publicly announced, the Athletic reported in May that West Ham had activated the one-year option in Cresswell’s contract.

As such, the 33-year-old is tied down until 2024, though may soon be made to battle for his starting berth if Tavares signs.

Wife of ex-military governor evicts step-children from family house

The family is brawling over the late former military governor’s estate even when he left behind a will.

BySaviour Imukudo  June 29, 2023 Reading Time: 3 mins read

The wife of a former military governor of Akwa Ibom State, Mosun Nkanga, has evicted her step-children from the family house in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

Mosun is the wife of Idongesit Nkanga, a former military governor of Akwa Ibom State.

Mr Nkanga, a retired air commodore, who died of COVID-19 in December 2020, had six children – two females from Mosun, and four males from another woman, Joanna Achibong.

He married Mosun in 2007 after his marriage to Joanna was dissolved by a court.

Mrs (Mosun) Nkanga evicted the step-children and their mother from the family house in Asokoro, Abuja, on 6 June this year.

FIRS

The eviction followed an order of a High Court in Abuja which, on 24 March 2022, issued her a warrant for “an immediate possession of two rooms apartment” in her late husband’s estate at No. 3A and B Mary Slessor Close, off Udo Udoma, off Yakubu Gowon Road, in Asokoro.

But Joanna and her four children – Utibeabasi Nkanga, Etietop Nkanga, Lance Nkanga and Ini Idara Nkanga (applicants) have gone back to court, asking the court to reinstate them into the house.

The applicants, through their lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, are asking a High Court in the FCT to set aside the warrant of possession of premises issued in favour of their stepmother.

Initial suit

Mrs Nkanga first sued Joanna and her four children in 2021 over their “refusal” to grant her access to her late husband’s house in Abuja.

On 17 March 2022, the court held that disallowing her access to possession of her matrimonial home violated her fundamental human rights to own and have an interest in her late husband’s property.

The court barred Joanna and her children from restraining or interfering with Mosun’s right to live in or enjoy her matrimonial home, pending the issuance of a letter of administration or grant of probate over the estate.

The court on 24 March 2022 issued a warrant of possession of premises, but Mrs Nkanga and the court enforcement department executed the warrant on 6 June 2023, more than a year since the order was given. Joanna and her four children were ejected from the building with their home appliances, luggage and other personal belongings.

Current suit

In the current suit, Joanna and her four children (applicants), through their lawyer, Mr Effiong, are asking the court to set aside the warrant for possession and execution of its 17 March 2022 judgment and their eviction from the family house.

Mr Effiong described the eviction of his clients as unlawful and the “refusal” to allow them access to their home as a violation of their fundamental human rights.

He said by virtue of Sections 20 and 21 of the Recovery of Premises Act, Cap 544, a warrant of possession can only be issued to enforce the judgment in an action by a landlord against a tenant and argued that the applicants were not tenants.

According to him, the court did not give Mrs Nkanga the exclusive right to possess, live and enjoy the property but only restrained his clients from interfering with the respondent’s right to access and possession of the premises pending the issuance of a letter of administration or grant of probate over the estate.

He described Mrs Nkanga’s action as an abuse of court order and therefore prayed the court to set aside the warrant of possession.

Former governor’s will

According to an extract of the late former governor’s will, the premises has two wings – 3A and 3B with two duplexes.

The former governor gave one wing, 3A, to his wife, Mosun.

For the second wing, 3B, where he lived before his death, he gave it to his children to live as a family house on the condition that it should be reverted to his wife, Mosun, when his last son, Ini Idara, turned 30 years.

Mr Effiong told our reporter that Mr Nkanga’s last son, Ini-Idara is 25 years and that Mrs Nkanga should not have taken possession of the building until Ini Idara is 30, as stated in the will.

Mrs Nkanga, he said, has not gotten the letter of administration or grant of probate over the estate as directed by the court before taking possession of the premises and described her action as an abuse of court processes.

Mrs Nkanga’s lawyer, Marvin Omorogbe, declined comments when contacted, saying that the matter was before the court and that he did not have the permission of his client to talk to the press on the matter.

When contacted, Mrs Nkanga said she could not comment since it was before the court. She, however, asked our reporter to find out who violated the will before the court came in to take possession of the property.

Mr Effiong, in his response, said that Mrs Nkanga has no respect for the will. He claimed she has also evicted his clients from their father’s house in Uyo and the village in Nsit Ibom Local Government Area, where the former governor hails from.

Akpabio won free, fair and square, Kalu declares

The Senate Majority Whip in the ninth Senate, Orji Kalu, has said that the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, won the contest in a free, fair and credible manner.

The former Governor of Abia State was reacting to media reports that some unnamed 22 Senators of the All Progressives Congress were planning to leave the party for another opposition party because of the outcome of the Senate election.

Kalu, who spoke on a recorded video through his verified Facebook account, said, Let me be honest with you, the election in the Senate was very transparent. Senator Akpabio won the election. It was free, it was fair.

” I congratulate the Clerk of the National Assembly, I congratulate the Clerk and all the Staff of the Senate. You know I cannot lie against my conscience. Akpabio won the election hands down.”

“There was no controversy about who won the election. If there is anything other person wants to say, that is their business. Akpabio, to my conscience, to my seeing and to my honour, won the election and we have since congratulated him,” he stated.

Speaking further, Kalu, who also aspired for the office of the President of the Senate, said, “There are no two Senates in the history of the Senate. There is only one Senate. On June 13, we decided to have one Senate.

“There are no pro and anti-Akpabio Senators. Even Senator Abdulaziz Yari, understands we have to work with Akpabio. He is the Senate President. We have congratulated him and I am using this Sallah period to appeal to our people to come together and work as one Senate,” he declared.

Hajj in 1953: Rare and unseen photos of the pilgrimage

In the past, Haj was a journey with many challenges, to the extent that those embarking on this journey would bid farewell to their family as if it was their last meeting

Riyadh: Here are some rare, unseen photos from the Haj pilgrimage shot in 1953 by a Pakistani pilgrim Abdul Ghafour Sheikh, who was a student at Harvard University back then.

Over the past 60 years, significant changes occurred mainly due to the growing number of Haj pilgrims.

In the past, Haj was a journey with many challenges, to the extent that those embarking on this journey would bid farewell to their family as if it was their last meeting.

Travel would start months before the actual Haj, mainly due to transportation challenges and difficult roads.

Many would prefer travelling during winter rather than facing the blazing summer.

The Haj pilgrimage to Makkah is a mandatory religious duty that must be performed by those Muslims who are physically and financially able to perform it, at least once in a lifetime.

Peter Obi closes case against Tinubu with 13 witnesses

By Ameh Ejekwonyilo
Real Africa News, Lagos, Nigeria

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, on Friday, closed his case at the Presidential Election Petition Court in Abuja with the 13 witnesses he called to prove his case against President Bola Tinubu’s election.

Mr Obi had proposed to call 50 witnesses but could only call 13 within the court allotted time. He also tendered tons of electoral documents.

Nigeria’s electoral commission, INEC, had declared Mr Tinubu the winner of the 25 February election.

Displeased with the results, Mr Obi, who came third in the election, filed a petition at the court to challenge Mr Tinubu’s victory.

He and his party filed the petition 20 days after Mr Tinubu was declared president-elect.

Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who came second at the polls, is also challenging the election outcome separately. He also closed his case on Friday with 27 witnesses, although he had proposed to call 100.

Both opposition candidates claim the presidency, alleging that Mr Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) did not win the election.

Resumed hearing

At the resumed hearing of Mr Obi’s suit on Friday, his lead counsel, Livy Uzoukwu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), led Tanko Yunusa, a stalwart of the Labour Party, as a witness.

Mr Yunusa, a Peter Obi Presidential Campaign Council spokesperson, was cross-examined by INEC’s lawyer, Kemi Pinheiro, a SAN.

Mr Tinubu and APC’s lawyers, Wole Olanipekun and Lateef Fagbemi, both SANs, also took their turns to grill Mr Yunusa during the cross-examination session.

Mr Yunusa was asked if he knew about a Federal High Court decision that dismissed the Labour Party’s suit challenging vice president Kashim Shettima’s nomination because of the alleged double nomination. He responded, “No.”

A lawyer in Mr Obi’s legal team, Ikechukwu Ezechukwu, a SAN, invited Peter Yari to the witness box as the 13th petitioner’s witness in the case.

Mr Yari was a presiding officer during the presidential election in Kaduna State. He adopted his witness statement on oath.

Under cross-examination by the respondents’ lawyers, Mr Yari said he had difficulty uploading the presidential election results on INEC’s Results Viewing Portal.

At the close of his testimony, Mr Obi’s lawyer, Mr Uzoukwu, told the court, “My Lords, that is the petitioners’ case.”

Afterwards, the court adjourned further hearing until 3 July for the respondents – Mr Tinubu, INEC and APC- to open their defence.

Background

Mr Obi came behind Atiku with 6,101,533 votes, while Mr Tinubu polled over 8.8 million.

As part of the grounds of the suit, Mr Obi argued that Mr Tinubu, “at the time of the (presidential) election, was not qualified to contest the election.”

Like Atiku, Mr Obi anchored his claim on the grounds that Mr Tinubu “was fined $460,000 for an offence involving dishonesty, namely narcotics trafficking imposed by the United States District Court, Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division, in case no:93C 4483″ between the United States of America and Bola Tinubu.”

He further alleged the non-qualification of Mr Tinubu’s running mate, Mr Shettima, citing the nomination for two separate constituencies – as Borno Central senatorial candidate and vice-presidential candidate ”for the whole of Nigeria” in the same election cycle.

Subsequently, Mr Obi put forward five prayers in court. Three of them are alternative prayers to the two main ones.

In his two main prayers, he urged the court to declare Mr Tinubu and his running mate, Mr Shettima, unqualified to contest the presidential elections.

Still, under the first prayer, he urged the court to declare that Mr Tinubu did not score most of the lawful votes in the election.

He asked the court to declare that he satisfied the constitutional requirements to be declared the winner of the 25 February 2023 presidential election after deducting alleged illegal votes from Mr Tinubu’s scores.

In the second main prayer, he urged the court to invalidate Mr Tinubu’s victory due to his failure to win one-quarter of the lawful votes cast in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

However, in his third prayer, which he put forward as an alternative prayer, Mr Obi urged the court to cancel the election and order INEC to conduct a fresh one.

But he repeated his claim that he won the election in prayer 4, which he also put forward as an alternative prayer.

Claiming to have secured the majority of the lawful votes cast during the election, Mr Obi called the court to declare him the president-elect and order the INEC to issue him a certtificate of return. He urged the court to void the certificate of return “wrongly” issued to Mr Tinubu.

In his fifth prayer, another alternative prayer, he called on the court to nullify the election, which he said was conducted without compliance with the electoral law, and order a fresh election.

Sierra Leone election: Tense poll amid fears of violence

By Umaru Fofana & Cecilia Macaulay

Real Africa News, Lagos & Nigeria

Sierra Leoneans are voting in a general election following a tense campaign marred by violence.

On Wednesday, the main opposition party alleged that one of its supporters was shot dead by police, which the police have denied.

Supporters of both main parties have been accused of attacking opponents.

This election is taking place against the background of a troubled economy, the rising cost of living, as well as concerns about national unity.

The voters are choosing a president, MPs and councillors in the West African country's fifth election since the civil war ended in 2002.

The 11-year conflict cost an estimated 50,000 lives, but since then the country has a tradition of largely peaceful, free and credible elections, according to Marcella Samba Sesay, chairperson of the NGO National Elections Watch.

With strong party loyalty among the 3.3 million registered voters, the campaigns have focused on shoring up their parties' bases rather than articulating and debating policy issues.

Who are the candidates?

President Julius Maada Bio, 59, of the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP) is running for a second five-year term. His main rival among the 12 challengers is Dr Samura Kamara, 72, of the All People's Congress (APC).

This is a repeat of the race in 2018, which saw Mr Bio narrowly win following a second round run-off.

How much violence has there been?

There has been an uptick in violence compared to five years ago, according to the West Africa Network for Peace-building Sierra Leone. It has counted 109 violent incidents since April.

This week, the APC said one person was killed by security forces as its supporters gathered for a protest at its headquarters in Freetown on Wednesday.

The police alleged the shots were fired from the direction of the APC building.

Dr Kamara has also said that his motorcade came under attack and there were reports that the APC office was set ablaze in the city of Bo last weekend.

The SLPP has said that it too has faced attacks in opposition strongholds.

President Bio has called for "peaceful elections" and "no violence". The African Union has also expressed concerns over reported incidents of violence and intimidation in parts of the country.

Sierra Leoneans have been alarmed by campaigners' rhetoric, the Reuters news agency reports.

"All I want is peace. I am scared by the high level of hatred I see being exhibited on social media by political extremists on both sides," a student from Freetown who wanted to remain anonymous told Reuters.

What about women?

This election comes months after a landmark law which says women must make up 30% of all positions in both the public and private sector - including in parliament.

But analysis from Sierra Leone's Institute for Government Reform (IGR) suggest the next parliament will fall short of this.

Parties have put forward lists of candidates running in each of the country's districts to be elected on a proportional representation basis. But according to the IGR, not enough women are placed high enough on those lists to make sure the 30% threshold is crossed.

Out of the 13 candidates running for president only one is a woman - the little-known Iye Kakay.

How does the election work?

The APC has also expressed concerns about the transparency of the counting process and has cast doubt on the electoral commission's ability to hold fair elections.

The commission has defended itself, saying measures have been put in place to ensure the credibility of the voting and counting process.

Results should be known within 48 hours of polls closing.

To be declared the winner of the presidential race, the leading candidate must secure 55% of the votes cast, otherwise a run-off will be held between the two candidates with the highest number of votes.

Sanwo-Olu gives N10 million to young lady who broke 40 years LASU record to become first ever undergraduate student to obtain 5.0CGPA

Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced a cash reward of N10 million for Ojo Aminat Yusuf, for breaking 40 years record of the Lagos State University (LASU).

Yusuf emerged as best graduating student for the 2021/2022 set with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.00 (First Class Honours).

Sanwo-Olu announced the cash reward during the school’s 26th convocation ceremony held on Thursday, June 22, 2023.

The governor said he will reward Yusuf with N5 million while the state government will gift her another N5 million.

Meanwhile, speaking to newsmen, Yusuf, an indigene of Edo state, thanked her parents for motivating and inspiring her to achieve the feat.

She recounted her ordeals as an undergraduate and how she overcame them all to achieve to emerge as best graduating student of her set.

“The events of the past few days have motivated me to share in brief my story, in a bid to inspire many others who are in similar situation as I was and are striving towards excellence.

”I called for financial support only under compelling circumstances, after I have exhausted all options.

“As a result, I experienced some serious financial constraints during my two plus four years stay at LASU.

“In 200 Level, second semester, just because I needed to get a browsing phone and get trained in computer skills, I saved up about 90 per cent of my feeding allowance,” Yusuf said.

She said that she settled for garri and groundnuts for a larger part of the semester, which one of her friends considered absurd and told every available listener.

“For most part of my days an undergraduate, I lived in the university premises, because I had no hostel, and going home everyday would have been absolutely inconvenient.

“The school had a stand-by security and standard lighting system, so, it was safe for me; my major challenge was having to attend lectures everyday in a neatly ironed white and black dress, acting like everything was perfect,” Yusuf said.

She also spoke on her first day in LASU for the physical screening, towards admission into diploma in law programme.

“I remember fantasising about achieving a remarkable feat in this prestigious university.

“I first did Diploma in Law programme, which runs for two years, in which students are taught compulsory law courses, with a view to offering direct entry admission to top class students.

“I studied really hard and prayed so fervently towards achieving excellence; I graduated from the programme with a CGPA of 4.98 and this was the best in my set.

US Immigration lawyer testifies against Lagos deputy governor

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Fasidi, a Nigerian, testified before the Lagos State Election Petition Tribunal.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Fasidi, a Nigerian, testified before the Lagos State Election Petition Tribunal.

She was led in evidence by Dr Olumide Ayeni (SAN), counsel to the petitioner, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party.

The witness told the tribunal that Hamzat, the third respondent in the petition, also applied for naturalisation as contained in Forms 8CFR/337 and N400.

Ayeni tendered the documents to the three-man tribunal but Counsel to all the respondents objected, saying the reason for their objection would be included in their final written addresses.

During cross-examination by Mr Eric Ogiegor, Counsel to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the witness said an individual could enjoy dual citizenship.

She, however, said she was not aware of the provision of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution that dealt with dual citizenship and she was subpoenaed before the tribunal to explain U.S. law and not Nigeria’s Constitution.

Mr Bode Olanipekun (SAN), counsel to Hamzat and Lagos State Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, asked the witness to disclose the jurisdiction and date Hamzat applied for naturalisation but she said she would not, because the information was protected by the Privacy Act of 1974.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Counsel, Mr Norris Quakers, asked the witness if she was aware that Hamzat disclosed his American citizenship.

The witness replied in the affirmative, and Quakers thereafter argued that the witness addressed issues of law and not those of facts.

The tribunal led by Justice Arum Ashom while admitting all the documents in evidence, ordered counsel to the respondents to include their objections in their final written addresses.

The other members of the tribunal are Justice Mikail Abdullahi and Justice l.P. Braimoh.

The tribunal adjourned the case until June 26 for the continuation of hearing.

Earlier, Ayeni presented a result sheet from polling units in nine local government areas of the state to establish differences in some areas, against what is recorded on INEC’s Form EC 40A.

Counsel to INEC, Sanwo-Olu, Hamzat and APC objected to the admissibility of Form EC 40A, reserving reasons until their final written addresses.

Sowore Publishes 2023 Campaign Expenses, Seeks Accountability

The presidential campaign organisation of Omoyele Sowore, the candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), in the just concluded presidential election in Nigeria has released the final breakdown of the 2023 presidential election campaign donations, sources of funding and expenditure.

This is even as the Sowore Political Action Committee (SPAC) also challenged other presidential candidates, including Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to release financial statements of their campaign.

A statement signed by the national publicity secretary of AAC, Femi Adeyeye, and issued yesterday in Abuja said this is in line with best campaign practices and the spirit of accountability of the party.

In the 2019 election, a published report showed that the Sowore campaign had an income of N157,884,936.98 and an expenditure of N157,805,799.40, leaving a closing balance of N79,137.28.

Adeyeye recalled that the committee gave monthly updates during the campaign and this is not the first time it will be releasing a breakdown such as this.

He said in 2019, the AAC candidate also released a complete breakdown of campaign expenses, the first recorded in the history of electioneering campaigns in Nigeria’s history.

The statement reads in part: “The Sowore Presidential campaign organisation, then in a novel manner released detailed accounts of money received and spent, which was published on major dailies in the country.

“Besides monetary contributions, we cannot quantify the human resources put into the campaign from Nigerians who supported us day and night. Those who stood their ground and gave their time to toe the path of honour and integrity, we cannot thank you all enough.”

He said the organisation also hopes that those in particular who sought public donations during the campaign season will also show Nigerians the donations they got from the campaign donors across Nigeria and beyond.

“We can’t have a clean leadership recruitment process in this country with people who shroud their campaign spending in secrecy.

“We believe that those who can’t keep books of campaign expenses and transparently account for the expenses incurred can’t run a country like Nigeria properly,” the statement added.

Subsidy: NEC considers N702bn civil servants⁣ allowance

The National Economic Council, on Thursday, in Abuja, said it considered recommendations from the National Salaries Income and Wages Commission to pay N702bn as cost of living allowance to civil servants as part of intervention plans to mitigate the effects of the discontinuance of petroleum subsidy as announced on May 29, 2023. ⁣

The Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, disclosed this to State House Correspondents shortly after the inaugural National Economic Council meeting at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa on Thursday. ⁣

Mohammed also revealed that the intervention includes a recommended sum ranging from N23.5bn to N45bn per month as a petroleum allowance for civil servants. ⁣

Thursday’s announcement comes barely two weeks after President Bola Tinubu directed the governors to concretise various palliative structures to ease the attendant hardship from the petrol subsidy discontinuance. ⁣

According to him, “The NEC had received recommendations on the various ways and means that the country can use whatever increases that we have in the revenue to mitigate the impact that this is going to make on the lives of our workers. ⁣

“And so they recommended that there should be a consequential adjustment, estimated at N702.92bn as part of the allowances that should be given as petroleum allowance to all workers and as well as a N23 or N25bn monthly offer to cushion the effect on workers.” ⁣

The returning governor said the council received other suggestions to review salaries and wages.⁣

“In addition to the palliative, the government looked at all the issues, challenges and problems holistically and set up a small committee of the council to review and come up with a term of reference to organise areas specifically where this palliative can come from and how it will be dispensed to alleviate the problem of workers and other vulnerable groups,” Mohammed explained.⁣

Members of the committee include the Governor of Kebbi State as Chairman; Anambra representing the South-East geopolitical zone; Governor of Benue, North-Central; Governor of Kaduna, North-West; Governor of Cross River, South-South; Oyo, South-West; and the Bauchi State Governor representing the North-East.⁣

“Other relevant agencies in the committee are the Budget Office, representatives of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Trade Union Congress of Nigeria and the Nigeria Labour Congress and Rukayat El-Rufai.⁣

“We will sit within two weeks to come up with a recommendation to NEC for a holistic decision that will be taken immediately to alleviate the problem that is being encountered by the removal of the subsidy,” the Bauchi Governor explained. ⁣

He said the input of the committee on palliatives earlier set up and headed by former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo would not be discarded but integrated into the ongoing process.⁣
