Why Bellingham was not sent off for covering his mouth

By Dale Johnson (24th June, 2026); 3:00pm

A picture of England midfielder Jude Bellingham covering his mouth while talking to Ghana's Jordan Ayew has caused controversy.

A law was brought in for the 2026 World Cup which says a player can be sent off if they hide their mouth when speaking to an opponent.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino requested it was introduced after Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni was given a six-match ban by Uefa for homophobic conduct towards Real Madrid's Vinicius Jr during a Champions League game in February.

Paraguay's Miguel Almiron became the first player to be sent off for the offence against Turkey at the weekend when the video assistant referee (VAR) stepped in to advise a red card.

So why was Bellingham not shown a red card on a VAR review in Tuesday's 0-0 draw in Boston?

The context is key. Covering the mouth has not been banned. Doing so in a confrontation with another player has.

Before the tournament Pierluigi Collina, Fifa's head of referees, was quite clear.

"Players can continue to cover their mouth with an arm and the shirt because they may chat with friends," Collina said.

"It's normal to a chat before, during or after the match.

"So if the conversation is a friendly conversation, they can continue to do it without any problem.

"When the conversation is confrontational, covering the mouth means that you are doing something very wrong, potentially, and the sanction is the red card."

Why Almiron's red card was different

Throughout almost every game at this World Cup you will find examples of players talking to each other while covering their mouth. Even referees have been doing it.

Importantly, there was no animosity between Bellingham and Ayew - it was merely two players chatting.

How did the Almiron red card differ?

What was happening in the match was important.

Paraguay's Isidro Pitta had gone to ground claiming a bad challenge by Turkey's Ismail Yuksek.

This led to a melee between the two sets of players. Close by, Almiron covered his mouth when talking to Turkey's Mert Muldur.

Almiron and Muldur were not directly involved in the pushing and shoving, but the game was in a heated situation.

"This thing about covering the mouth is for us a very, very important rule," Infantino told SNTV on Tuesday following Almiron's dismissal.

"It's about respect. It's about the example that we should give.

"If you have nothing to hide, you don't cover your mouth when you speak to somebody.

"The rules have been made very clear to everyone."

There are questions about how reliable this law change is, however. There is the possibility that a player could use it to get an opponent sent off in a situation like this.

Almiron, for instance, did not appear to be acting aggressively, while Muldur immediately turned around to highlight it to an assistant referee.

Almiron has received a one-game ban and will miss Paraguay's final group game against Australia, with both teams likely requiring a point to reach the last 32.

The ban could have been longer if there was evidence of abusive language.

The new law is an opt-in, whereby a competition can choose whether to implement it. So far, it is only being used at the World Cup.

The difficulty in being consistent with the law, and the potential for it to be abused, means it might not be adopted by the domestic leagues.

Scotland primed for game of their lives against fallible Brazil

By

Tom English (24th June, 2026) 3;00PM

BBC Scotland's chief sports writer

In the beginning, it was Pele and Jairzinho, Gerson and Amarildo, the Brazilian boys of 1966, still champions of the world, if only for another month.

These were the icons that Scotland faced the first time they played the Selecao, 60 years and 10 games ago. Stevie Chalmers, a Lisbon Lion in waiting, opened the scoring after a minute. It ended 1-1.

What Steve Clarke would give for more of the same on Wednesday in the blistering humidity of Miami. Scotland's game of the century is nigh.

There's been pain against Brazil. Too much.

The forlorn look on Tom Boyd's face in the 73rd minute in Paris in 1998 as the ball ricochets off his right arm and into the back of his own net; the goal that settled it - 2-1 to the South Americans.

The head-in-hands shock of the great Billy Bremner when he fails to score from a few yards out just after the hour mark in Frankfurt in 1974 - 0-0, undefeated Scotland going home on goal difference.

The goal difference spectre looms large again now, more than a half a century later. Scotland know they don't need to win and don't even necessarily need to draw to get themselves into the knockout round for the first time in their history.

Getting a point, or three, is the object of the exercise and their total focus, but a battling 1-0 loss, a rough 2-0 defeat, or even a desperate chasing and more goals conceded might still see them advance.

Andy Robertson said on Tuesday that he didn't give a damn about permutations, but you can bet he knows all the detail that he needs to know. His obsession, naturally, is on getting the kind of result that powers Scotland into the next round.

You don't get to his level if you're looking on defeat as some kind of victory, which, of course, it could be in the grand scheme of things. Hence, the barmy nature of the world they're living in right now.

It's been 15 years since Scotland played Brazil and 28 years since they played them in a World Cup. If you're very, very lucky you get to face those yellow jerseys once in your career, so best make the most of it.

Scotland cannot be gung-ho, but they have to be more threatening than they have been in their two games in America and in the six that went before in their last two European Championship campaigns.

Against Morocco, they put in a committed second-half performance, they applied pressure and had moments.

Against a team clearly good enough to counter on them with potentially devastating consequences, Scotland played with as much risk as was sensible but still didn't get shot on target. They've only had two in two games so far.

Nobody in the Scotland camp is hiding from that. One by one, coaches and players have spoken about it this week - this need to fire shots, metaphorically and literally.

Clarke has to find a hybrid game plan that keeps things tight against a dangerous, but not imperious, Brazil while at the same time asking questions at the other end, unsettling Brazil, shaking them out of a rhythm and picking away at their self-belief.

Neymar and Vinicius Junior are superstars of world football

Facing Brazil at a World Cup? Football doesn't get any sexier than this. In six decades, Scotland have faced so many of their immortals - Tostao and Rivellino, Brito and Clodoaldo, Zico and Falcao, Romario and Careca, Roberto Carlos and Cafu, Rivaldo and Ronaldo.

They've never beaten them, not in four meetings at World Cups and not in six friendlies - that draw in 1966 and another in 1974 are Scotland's lot.

A nation that owes its football existence to the son - Charles Miller, the founding father of Brazilian football - of a man from Fairlie in North Ayrshire is targeting a sixth World Cup.

Vinicius Junior is the one they look to now, the heir apparent, the winger most likely to propel them forward. And Brazil are in need of some propelling.

It's been 24 years since they last won this tournament, a veritable eternity for them. In the years since - four losing quarter-finals and a losing semi-final against Germany; 7-1, the horror of Belo Horizonte.

This vintage has not shown itself to be genuine contenders. Not yet. Their qualification was sloppy; played 18, won eight, drew four, lost six.

Of their victories, they took until the 89th minute to beat Chile, the 90th minute to beat Peru and the 99th minute to beat Colombia. They lost to Uruguay, Colombia, Paraguay, Bolivia and Argentina (twice).

This game could see the return of Neymar after an absence of two-and-a-half years. The prodigal will play a part, it seems.

Even a glancing look at the Brazilian media reveals their fascination with him, the microscopic detail about his calf injury, the almost hourly updates on what he's been doing in training and what role he might be deployed in - a false nine seems to be the consensus, maybe off the bench if things are going Brazil's way.

'I want him to have the best night of his life' - Clarke

Clarke has his own selection issues. The news of Aaron Hickey is not good, so who plays right-back against the speed and blood-curdling trickery of Vini Jr?

Nathan Patterson, Anthony Ralston, or does Clarke go rogue and ask Kieran Tierney to do one of the least enviable jobs in football? There's sense in that. Tierney has vast experience. This is a day for nous.

Who does Clarke play up front - and is there any prospect that whoever it is might have more than crumbs to feed on?

Che Adams runs hard, but he's unconvincing. Lyndon Dykes is a battering ram, but Gabriel and Marquinhos have seen his sort before in their storied careers. Lawrence Shankland, Ross Stewart and George Hirst are the other contenders.

There is logic in putting Scott McTominay into the role - a curveball for Brazil - but Steven Naismith, assistant manager, dismissed it the other day.

McTominay is big and strong, incredibly energetic, a proper handful and a superb finisher. He has not been at his best in the two games, not even close to his best, but there's always the threat of him sparking to life.

It's got to happen now. It's got to happen for John McGinn, too. It's got to happen for Ben Gannon-Doak, the potential difference-maker out wide.

He was utilised off the bench against Morocco, Clarke hoping he'd have a bigger impact when the game was looser and the space was opening up. Gannon-Doak will start on Wednesday.

Scotland's strength is their endeavour, their hard work, their passion, but those things only get you so far. There is some technical ability in there, but not masses of it.

What was said before Haiti and Morocco is still relevant now - Scotland's big-name players need to step it up. They need to be better, they need to create and be ruthless.

So many things need to happen for Scotland to get a point, or three, from this game, but if they do then the joyous fortnight-long scenes in Boston, a city that adopted the Tartan Army as their own, will feel like a warm-up act.

It's a racing certainty that the Scotland fans, in their revelling and in their bevvying, have extra gears in them. The great hope is that Clarke and his players, in their pursuit of history, have a whole lot more to show in what could be the game of their lives

Nigeria’s next President already decided – Pastor Adeboye

By Olayinka Latona

02 May, 2026; 01:50pm

Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, has said Nigeria’s next president had already been determined by God.

Pastor Adeboye said this while speaking at the workers’ meeting held at the Redemption City on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Saturday.v

Adeboye said the outcome of the election is beyond human influence.

“The one that will rule has been decided by God before we were born. He knows the end from the beginning.

“God is not going to sit in heaven scratching His mighty head with His everlasting hand, saying who should rule Nigeria in 2027. It has been decided before the foundation of the world,” Adeboye told the congregation.

He urged worshippers to focus on their spiritual assignments: “Keep on praying, winning souls, and let your fruits abide. Face your business.”

Addressing recent comments by another preacher who described Adeboye, Bishop David Oyedepo, and Pastor William Kumuyi as “denominational fathers” rather than fathers of all Nigerian Christians, the RCCG leader agreed entirely.

PSG and Bayern in 'different world' to Premier League

Craig Nelson (BBC Sport Journalist)

Paris St-Germain and Bayern Munich are competing in "different worlds" to Premier League teams, says Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.

And the Spaniard believes the difference in attacking quality on show in the first two legs of the Champions League semi-finals is down to the 'freshness' of the players.

Ligue 1's leading side PSG edged out the German champions 5-4 in a thrilling tie at the Parc des Princes in Paris, while the Gunners ground out a 1-1 draw at Atletico Madrid.

Arteta says PSG and Bayern's star players were able to be fresher than the Gunners' tired attacking talent, which he believes is down to differing levels of competition they experience in their domestic leagues.

"To deliver that much quality you have to be very fresh, and the difference in the leagues and the way they are competing is night and day," said the Arsenal boss.

"You just have to see a lot of stats around it. We are comparing two different worlds."

Collectively, Arsenal's starting XI in their Champions League semi-final first leg have played 32,508 minutes this season - more than any of their rivals left in the competition.

Atletico's starting XI have played 31,701, compared with Bayern's 31,522 and PSG's 29,968.

Premier League and La Liga teams play 38 domestic matches each season, while Bundesliga and Ligue 1 sides play 34 domestic matches as their leagues are made up of 18 teams.

The Gunners' David Raya (4,140), Martin Zubimendi (4,096), Declan Rice (4,002) and William Saliba (3,774) were all in the top five, in terms of minutes played this season, out of the four starting line-ups.

While Rice, for example, has played 359 more minutes this season than England team-mate Harry Kane - almost equal to four whole matches.

"The quality of the two teams [PSG and Bayern], and especially the individual quality of players, I have never seen something like this," added Arteta.

"But when I look at the amount of minutes and the freshness of those players, I'm not surprised.

"How many players were available [for PSG and Bayern]? All of them, at their very best. That's the most important thing."

Are Premier League teams at a disadvantage?

There is no doubt that PSG and Bayern's attacking players lived up to their billing in Tuesday night's thrilling encounter.

Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored twice for defending champions PSG, who also had Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele on the scoresheet.

Bayern countered with goals from leading scorer Kane and top attacking duo Michael Olise and Luis Diaz, all three of whom signed from Premier League clubs.

In contrast, Arsenal were missing injured German forward Kai Havertz and lost key creative midfielder Martin Odegaard midway through the second half of their match in Madrid with injury.

England winger Bukayo Saka, meanwhile, started on the bench after spending a month out with an Achilles injury - he also missed eight games earlier in the season with hip and hamstring problems.

There have been concerns raised in the past by Premier League managers about how fixtures are scheduled around key European fixtures.

Ligue 1 recently agreed a PSG request to postpone a match against Lens that was scheduled between the two legs of their Champions League quarter-final against Liverpool.

When asked about potential help from the Premier League schedulers, Arteta said: "If they can do that, that would be great."

Arsenal's title rivals, Manchester City, recently held discussions with the Premier League over their fixture scheduling after matches had to be postponed due to their participation in both domestic cup finals.

Those two matches - at home to Crystal Palace (13 May) and away to Bournemouth (19 May) - have since been rearranged. As a result, City will now play three games in seven days, either side of their FA Cup final against Chelsea on Saturday, 16 May.
