Why Tinubu made me solid minerals minister instead of information – Alake

By Adekunle Sulaimon

The minister of solid minerals, Dele Alake, has explained the reasons behind his appointment into the ministry by President Bola Tinubu which stirred controversies.

Alake highlighted his sense of responsibility, expertise, and track record as what propelled Tinubu’s decision.

He clarified that the president decided to shock Nigerians by not appointing him to the information ministry which he has a background in.

He said, “My portfolio has been the upset of the entire cabinet because given my antecedents, exposure, and experience in the area of perception, information management, and the likes so most people have pigeon whole me for Information and so we decided to shock everybody.

“Now if you all can sit down to analyse the global trend of economic development, you would note that the hydrocarbon that is the oil is fading out and the world is moving towards alternatives like gas, electric cars, and the rest. So what is the next economic growth factor? It is solid mineral.

Alake's appointment will enhance Ekiti's economy, development - Group

“Given the nature of this sector to our economic growth and vitality of this country which is dear to the heart of Mr President, it’s just very apt and proper for him to send me here because he knows and trusts that I have a demonstrable sense of responsibility and courage to drive the agenda, that is why I am here. We are going to drive that agenda with the full cooperation of everyone,” he added.

Alake further said that it is not about the portfolio or ministry that he is assigned to but the results that he will yield for Nigerians.

“In my world, where I come from, you know you are in the civil service and have your rules and regulations but in my world, there are no strictures, I have been in the civil service as a commissioner before. My modus operandi is results, I really don’t care how you get me the results as long as you use legitimate means to get the result.

“I am going to set an agenda with focus and objectives, we would get the results. Now we are not going to be allowing civil service structures and strictures to stifle us from creativity and flourishing, what we need is attitudinal change.”

Arteta names player who ‘dominated’ Crystal Palace vs Arsenal game

By Ifreke Inyang

Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta has said Declan Rice “dominated the game” during their 1-0 victory at Crystal Palace on Monday night.

Rice has made an impressive start to life with the Gunners following his club-record move from West Ham last month.

The England midfielder produced a man-of-the-match display again at Selhurst Park.

Rice was key as Arteta’s men defended with 10 players for the last 30 minutes of the match.

As well as shielding the back four and retaining possession, he made several well-timed runs forward and should have had a first-half assist after setting Eddie Nketiah clear.

Speaking to Sky Sports about Rice’s performance after the game, Arsenal boss Arteta said: “I thought he was fantastic. He really dominated the game. To ask him to do something new, I thought he was fantastic.”

How FG can solve education challenges –ASUU, SSANU

By Grace Edema

Tertiary institutions’ unions including the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, and the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics have given suggestions on how to solve the mirage of problems in the education sector to the new Minister for Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman.

Without a doubt, quite a number of issues have been on the front burner of ASUU, SSANU, and ASUP agitations in the last few years.

Some are renegotiation of the FGN/ASUU/SSANU 2009 agreement, funding for the revitalisation of public universities to mention a few.

Mamman who took his oath of office on Monday, alongside other appointees was sworn in as the Minister of Education by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola.

Before his appointment, he was the Vice-Chancellor of Baze University, Abuja, a private tertiary institution founded in 2011 by Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, and served as the Director General of the Nigerian Law School from 2005-2013.

With his rich profile and experience in the sector, Mamman is believed to be equipped with all it takes to make an impact in the nation’s education sector.

However, the Vice-President, SSANU, Dr Abdussobor Salaam, in an interview with The PUNCH, insisted that the government needed to understand the purpose and objective of education before making an attempt to solve the lingering problems.

He said, “The expectation of the SSANU is that since an experienced hand in the education sector has been made Minister of Education, there should be a turnaround in the sector. With the appointment of Prof. Mamman, we expect that he fully understands the challenges and problems of education in Nigeria and swings into action into resolving them. The challenges in this sense should not be limited to industrial issues alone but must begin by giving a focus and objective to the education system. This is because the biggest challenge to the education system is that the government has not clearly understood the purpose and objective of education for the nation. If the purpose and objectives of education had been understood by government and its officials, most of the problems besetting the system would have been resolved, especially that of neglect and poor funding.”

ASUU begins four-week rollover strike, govs oppose action in state varsities

He added that  SSANU expected Mamman to bring to bear his expertise as an educationist, administrator, and, more significantly, a lawyer and senior advocate, to resolve the issues surrounding the abuse of the University system by the Government.

“Especially in areas such as the introduction of IPPIS as the mode of salary payment for university staff, the usurpation of the powers of Governing Councils by the office of the Head of Service, the implementation of previous agreements and Memoranda signed with the Government, the renegotiation of the SSANU/FGN 2009 agreements among others.

Also speaking, ASUU president, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, said, “All the issues of funding university appropriation of salaries are issues the minieter should look into. He should meet with us and resolve them once and for all in the interest of our children. We want the government to sign our agreements and if there are issues, they should call us to negotiate. We seek payment of our seven and half month’s unpaid salary, Nigerians should tell them to pay us we covered the lost ground we have done the work they said we didn’t do. We have done the work they should pay.”

Also speaking with our correspondent, Chairman, ASUU UNILAG,  Prof. Kayode Adebayo, added that “ASUU cannot expect less than a good performance that would address the ugly situations in the public education system in the nation generally and most especially in  the University system.”

ASUP national president, Mr Anderson Ezeibe,  explained that at the tertiary level, issues bordering on sustainable funding, acceptable wage structure for staff, infrastructure deficit, violations of laws, and extant regulations were all issues of urgent concern.

He said, “For the polytechnic system, it is important that he takes verifiable steps to address the issue of certification by reviewing the current status of HND and its possible replacement with a Bachelor of Technology certification (for qualified Polytechnics) while retaining the OND certification for skills and artisanal certification in the sector. This will put the HND/degree dichotomy issue to rest.

“Prudent management of scarce resources, appropriate and deserving wage structures, improvement in funding, respect for laws, statutes, and regulations are the path to restoration of the education sector to its lost glory.”

Oyetola assumes office, vows to boost economy

By Ezra Ukanwa, Abuja

MINISTER of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola has officially assumed office, outlining his vision for a thriving blue economy sector that prioritizes sustainability, innovation, and economic growth.

Oyetola, who said this at his maiden news conference held in the Ministry of Transportation, on Monday, also acknowledged the abundance of marine resources that exist within the coastal region and emphasized the need to fully harness them for economic gains.

The minister announced that at the global level Blue Economy is estimated at more than 1.5 trillion dollars annually, urging stakeholders to seize the opportunity and become a significant player in the industry.

Oyetola also called for collaboration and teamwork among all stakeholders and agencies, adding that teamwork would help maximize the benefits of Nigeria’s vast coastal resources.

He added that part of his vision is to ensure that inland rivers, lakes, and waterways are well utilized, both in terms of cargo shipment and passenger transportation.

He said: “I strongly believe in the power of collaboration, and dedication to service. The collaborative effort of a group to achieve a common goal can only be efficient and effective through team work. This is why I crave your indulgence that we must work as a team to deliver on our mandate. Let us work together to find innovative solutions to the challenges we face, ensuring that our oceans and marine life are safe, reliable, and sustainable.

“Our oceans cover more than two-thirds of our planet’s surface, holding the key to sustainable economic growth, environmental preservation, and technological innovation. As we look ahead, my vision is rooted in the responsible management and utilisation of our marine resources to benefit not only our economy but also the health of our planet.

“Experts say the Blue Economy is estimated to be worth more than 1.5 trillion Dollars per year globally. Therefore, given our size as a country and considering the size of our blue economy, we should be a significant player in this sector, so as to contribute immensely to the revenue generation of our country and also provide jobs for the unemployed.

“We must come up with practicable ways of ensuring that our inland rivers, lakes, and waterways are well utilised, both in terms of cargo shipment and passenger transportation. And this can be done by embarking on a holistic dredging campaign for most of our strategically important inland waterways so as to make them navigable for the passage of goods and people.

“We equally have a duty to promote better inter-agency cooperation and coordination between the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, the Nigerian Ports Authority, and the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority.

“We must seize this opportunity to create positive change, leaving a lasting legacy for generations to come. I appreciate your dedication, and I look forward to working alongside each of you in the pursuit of a better Nigeria.”

On her part, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation/Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, while stating that water has a lot of untapped resources pledged to support the vision of the new minister.

Vanguard reports that Oyetola resumed office in the company of his wife, Mrs. Kafayat Oyetola, some Chief Executive Officers of Agencies under the ministry, and former cabinet members from Osun state.

UNILAG student gets U.S. grant for collaboration on sustainable food systems

Following the success of a 2022 U.S. Consulate Public Diplomacy grant, a first-year student of Marine Sciences at the University of Lagos, Ms. Oluwadamilola Sansadeen, travelled to the United States this summer for a training program on permaculture and sustainable food systems.

Sansadeen, a volunteer project manager at an agriculture nonprofit –– ProtectOzone Sustainable Livelihood Initiative –– received two months of mentorship from Dr. Jeremy Cowan, an assistant professor of sustainable food production systems at Kansas State University.

In addition to gaining practical skills and knowledge on creating sustainable and resilient agricultural systems, she completed the Permaculture Design Certificate Course at the College of Agriculture, Kansas State University and interned at the Willow Lake Student Farm of the university.

Sansadeen described her experience at the university as valuable, as it provided her with the unique opportunity to collaborate with multiple agricultural stakeholders in Kansas’ thriving permaculture community.

“Embracing sustainable agriculture paves the path ahead on creating a food secure Nigeria,” Sansadeen said. “During my time at Kansas State University, I learned how to operate farm implements. I do not even know how to drive a car yet, but I can operate a tractor.”

U.S. Consulate Public Affairs Officer Joe Kruzich noted that the collaboration between the U.S. university professor and the Nigerian undergraduate underscores the U.S. government’s enduring commitment to fostering academic exchange.

“By connecting a bright young mind from Nigeria with a prestigious U.S. university, we are not only fostering academic and cultural exchange but also promoting innovative solutions to shared global challenges,” Kruzich added.

Cowan, Sansadeen’s mentor and assistant professor of sustainable food production systems at Kansas State University, said he was proud to support her aspirations to make a difference in the field of permaculture.

“Sansadeen was an asset and a joy to have in our permaculture design certificate course and in her volunteer efforts at Kansas State University’s Willow Lake Student Farm. She brought a completely new perspective to both programs, introducing Kansans to her Nigerian culture. Her presence and impact here are already missed,” Cowan added.

“I didn’t like him at all” – Napoli’s Rudi Garcia knocks Osimhen after two-goal Frosinone showing

“I didn’t like him at all” – Napoli’s Rudi Garcia knocks Osimhen after two-goal Frosinone showing

The Nigeria international came to the Italian champions’ rescue following a false start at the new-promoted side

Napoli’s head coach, Rudi Garcia, has pinpointed an area of concern in Victor Osimhen’s performance during their triumphant 3-1 victory against Frosinone, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Parthenopeans initially found themselves trailing due to Abdou Harroui’s seventh-minute penalty.

However, they quickly rebounded, with Matteo Politano finding the net midway through the first half.

Nigerian sensation Osimhen then took center stage. Although he secured an assist for Giacomo Raspadori’s 35th-minute strike, it was ultimately disallowed for offside.

Nevertheless, Osimhen refused to be denied, firing a fierce right-footed shot into the net three minutes before halftime, putting Napoli in the lead.

The 24-year-old striker completed his brace in the second half, outwitting goalkeeper Stefano Turati in a one-on-one situation.

What has Garcia said?

Garcia, while pleased with Osimhen’s stellar attacking display, expressed dissatisfaction with the striker’s defensive contributions.

However, he noted a notable improvement in Osimhen’s defensive efforts following their halftime discussion.

During the post-match press conference, Garcia responded to a question about the pressure on Osimhen’s performance, saying, “From an offensive point of view, he was very good, he scored two goals, and I have nothing to say to him.

“From a defensive point of view, however, I didn’t like him at all, and I told him so during the interval. In the past, he pressed more and defended better.

“We corrected this in the second half and played with a lot of quality. I knew he didn’t have 90 minutes in his legs, but we waited for him to score.

“From a psychological point of view, he’s engaged in the match, and when there’s competition, he’s always there to respond. He’s a driving force and will never change; that’s his strength.”

Osimhen was Serie A’s top scorer last season, notching an impressive 26 goals. His contributions were pivotal in Napoli securing the Serie A title, breaking a 33-year championship drought.
