It has been well documented the injury crisis that Manchester United are currently going through but it seems they could be coming out the other side.
Mason Mount and Raphael Varane could well be the two players back fit for the Red Devils, if not for the Bayern Munich game then certainly the Burnley game.
If the English midfielder is back fit for Erik ten Hag’s side in the Champions League then the former Chelsea man could be the key difference in the middle of the park in Munich.
If United, and Erik ten Hag, persist with the diamond formation then Mount may well be the key man for the Red Devils.
Mount in place of McTominay
Scott McTominay started the defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford but his 15 passes and his minimal involvement means the Scottish midfielder may well have blown his chance to start the game in Germany.
However, the diamond in midfield may well work better for Mount if United are to play on the counter-attack, which is as expected.
The Englishman is superb when on the turn and this will be crucial for United when trying to break quickly on the break for the English side.
Mount, despite being labelled by Bent as the worst signing of the transfer window on talkSPORT, could be the difference.
The German side suffered similar issues at the Etihad Stadium and this was mainly down to the co-ordination and the intensity of Manchester City’s press.
Could this be Mount’s breakout game
It’s fair to say that the English midfielder has struggled since his move from Chelsea in June but this game could be the key match for the 24-year-old.
If Mount performs well at the Allianz it could be the kickstart his United career has needed and if he helps the Red Devils to a win or a hard-fought draw then the fans may well warm to the midfielder quicker.
Ten Hag made the midfielder his first signing of the summer and you wonder if the signing of Mount was due to his plan of playing a diamond midfielder like he did in the Brighton defeat.
