Nouhaila Benzina becomes first player to wear hijab at World Cup

Morocco defender Nouhaila Benzina has made history by becoming the first player to wear a hijab at a World Cup.

The 25-year-old wore the Islamic headscarf as she made her first appearance at the tournament in her side's 1-0 win over South Korea.

The wearing of head coverings for religious reasons was authorised by Fifa in 2014.

Morocco are one of eight teams making their debut at this summer's Women's World Cup.

Benzina, who plays her club football in Morocco, is the first player to wear a hijab at a senior women's international tournament.

She was an unused substitute during her country's opening game against Germany, which they lost 6-0.

IPOB confirms authenticity of Kanu’s order to end sit-at-home in S’East

By Lawrence Njoku, Enugu

Enugu Youths Storm Streets In Celebration

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) yesterday confirmed the authenticity of the handwritten note by its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, to Simeon Ekpa ordering him to stop calling sit-at-home on his behalf in the South East region.

This was as Enugu youths stormed the streets yesterday in support of the IPOB leader’s directive to Ekpa to end the illegal sit-at-home that has ruined lives and businesses in the region.

Recall that Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, had unveiled and read the note at a press briefing in Enugu last Friday. No sooner had the note been made public than Ekpa dismissed it as “fake”, saying it was orchestrated by the Department of State Services (DSS) and other government agencies. He had gone further to question the rationale behind it.

But in a statement forwarded to The Guardian in Enugu by the IPOB, the group also dissociated itself and Kanu from “the senseless enforcement of sit-at-home”, stressing that it decided to make it public to avoid consequences on innocent citizens.

The statement signed by the Media and Publicity Secretary of the IPOB, Emma Powerful, stated that Kanu in his wisdom, “communicated the message to the infiltrators through the right channel and a source they should trust.”

Heb added: “The claim that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s handwritten note is fake is part of their mischief to continue in their contract to blackmail IPOB and Mazi Nnamdi Kanu with the violent enforcement of the infamous sit-at-home used to terrorise our people. We understand that a power drunk crime Minister with his inconsequential kangaroo de facto government in exile will ignore the order for the fear of deflating his over bloated ego.

“IPOB leadership initiated the Monday sit-at-home in protest of the abduction and rendition of our leader and to make sure that the Nigeria government arraigned Mazi Nnamdi Kanu openly, in a public court where we could see him. But our leader instructed that it be suspended so that we don’t torture our people. In line with the principle of command and control, we obeyed, and the sit-at-home order was suspended. However, infiltrators who don’t believe in the principle of command and control, which is a core value of IPOB, ignored the order from our leader. These infiltrators working alongside the Nigeria government contracted agent provocateurs’ violent enforcement of reckless sit-at-homes has escalated insecurity in Biafra Land.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has sent messages through his visitors at DSS dungeon to the infiltrators to stop the reckless sit-at-home several times, all to no avail.

“When our leader called for complete peace in Biafra Land and to protect our people instead of killing them in one of his court appearances, he was referring to the infiltrators to stop their infamous enforcement of sit-at-home orders. That call went on deaf ears. This last message in his handwriting is the last straw.”

The statement continued: “Every Biafran must understand the importance of this letter. If you are a lover of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, you must listen to him. More so, we must stop giving credence to the enemy of Ndigbo and Biafrans claiming to be Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s disciple but has gone ahead to make himself a Prime Minister while his supposed leader is in solitary detention. Perhaps when Mazi comes out, he will become the fake disciple’s deputy or personal assistant. Every Biafran must stop observing any sit-at-home order from the infiltrators. The reckless enforcement and abuse of sit-at-homes is an opportunity for criminals to kidnap, murder, maim and snatch cars from innocent citizens.”

These government sponsored criminality and violent enforcement of sit-at-home have endangered the lives of our people through invasion of murderous and over-zealous Nigeria security agents.

“The note from our leader dissociating himself and IPOB from the infamous sit-at-homes are being distributed to all Nigeria Security Agencies, all foreign Embassies in Abuja, and to the contractors of the infiltrators for their notice. We are IPOB, and we are wiser than the serpent.”

In the peaceful protest to support the IPOB leader’s directive, Enugu youths marched through major roads and streets in the metropolis brandishing placards with various inscriptions, such as, ‘Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is Against Sit-at-Home’; ‘Sit-at-Home Discourages Economic Progress’; ‘We say NO to Enemies of our Dear State and Region’; ‘Sit-at-Home Affects our Mental Health’; ‘Sit-at-home is Affecting our Children’s Education’ and ‘We Cannot Continue this Way’, among others.

Leader of Enugu Innovative Youths, Comrade Edeani Maduabuchi Edeani, who was part of the protest, told reporters that people pushing the illegal sit-at-home under any guise should stop it, adding that the IPOB leader is against it and has publicly called for its cancellation.

Edeani said that the illegal sit-at-home had resulted in untold hardship and poverty in Enugu State and by extension the entire South East.

“The illegal sit-at-home is causing so much havoc and making our education, health and economic institutions not to function optimally and our people are counting their losses both as individuals, groups and corporate entities.

“We as youths in Enugu State are supporting Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in his stance to stop and totally cancel the illegal sit-at-home being engineered by a misguided Nigerian in Finland.

“We are here to let the world know that anybody supporting the illegal sit-at-home is against the South-East, good people of Enugu State and the future of youths in the state and South East in general.

“I call on all youths in Enugu State and South-East to desist from supporting the retrogressive, evil and illegal sit-at-home.

“It remains a wrong path and it will not do anybody any good rather it will truncate our future and prospects in life as youths,” Edeani added.

He, however, appealed to the Federal Government to obey the court order and release Kanu, adding that it would help to reinvigorate the South East and bring the manipulation by a few hoodlums to an end.

Also speaking, Mr. Ebube Nebo said that youths in Enugu State were tired of the sit-at-home order, adding: “Sit-at-home is a cankerworm gradually snowballing into a big monster of human and economic waste.

“In all sincerity, we are suffering. It is not just about what the Enugu State governor is saying to end it; we are indeed suffering and feeling the pains of our deprivation and loss the illegal sit-at-home is causing us.

“As youths, it is affecting our education, employment and entrepreneurial prospects, while our fathers and mothers, especially those in the villages and suburbs, are living in untold hardship.”

Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the February 25, 2023 elections, Atiku Abubakar, and some of the governors elected on the party’s platform have started consultations on the party’s future.

This is even as they await the outcome of the petition before the Presidential Election Petition Court.

The agenda of the closed-door meeting which was held at the Maitama residence of former Minister of Foreign Affairs under the General Sani Abacha military junta and chieftain of the PDP, Chief Tom Ikimi, on Saturday, was shrouded in secrecy.

“Another one is scheduled for next week at the same time. It is expected to be an expanded meeting which will attract a larger number of party stakeholders.

“Today’s meeting was attended by seven of our governors among others. The truth is that we need to speed up the reconciliation process and strengthen our party for the task ahead.

“Our nation is in trouble and like it or not a majority of Nigerians are looking up to us to lead the way out of the dire situation the All Progressives Congress. APC has forced us into.”

After the meeting, Atiku took to his Twitter handle and tweeted, “ Earlier today, I joined other leaders and stakeholders of the PDP at a meeting in Abuja. The meeting was ripe with productive discourse and collaborative energy.”

Mason Greenwood’s return to Man Utd squad

Mason Greenwood could still play for Manchester United, after it emerged that the club’s most prominent sponsor, Adidas, is considering approving plans for him to return to the squad.

Greenwood has not featured for the Red Devils since January 2022, after being charged with rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour and assault.

The charges were dropped in February, but the 21-year-old remains under suspension by United, who are conducting an internal investigation.

Greenwood was recently pictured in private training sessions with manager Erik ten Hag who is thought to have spoken to the player on several occasions.

According to The Sun, United has discussed the possibility of Greenwood’s return with shirt sponsor Adidas, with those conversations described as “positive”.

It is believed that assurances from the German sportswear giant could see other sponsors follow suit.

EU threatens sanction on Niger over military coup

By Maina Maina

The European Union (EU) has condemned in the strongest terms the coup in Niger, insisting that the events in the West African country in recent days constitute a serious attack on stability and democracy.

It also warned that any abuse of the fundamental rights of the ousted leader would meet dire consequences with the suspension of support for the troubled country.

The EU, in a statement on Friday signed by the High Representative, Josep Borrell said: “As ECOWAS pointed out in its latest press release, this coup is in total violation of the democratic principles on which the management of political power in the region is based.”

The EU reiterated its support for the action of the organisation in the sub-region and for the ongoing efforts to allow an immediate return to constitutional order.

It called for President Bazoum’s security and freedom of movement to be guaranteed unconditionally, warning that: “Any breach of the constitutional order will have consequences for cooperation between the EU and Niger, including the immediate suspension of all budget support. We will remain in close coordination with the ECOWAS Heads of State.”

The EU, however, said it stands with the people of Niger and reaffirms its full commitment to strict respect for the rule of law, human rights, and international humanitarian law in the country.

Oshoala shirtless celebration sparks mixed reactions

By Johnny Edward

Mixed reactions have trailed the shirtless celebration of Super Falcons’ Asisat Oshoala at the ongoing Women’s World Cup tournament in Australia and New Zealand, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Barcelona forward, who came on as a second-half substitute, swooped in on a defensive mix-up in the 72nd minute and beat an Australian defender for pace, before slotting past the goalkeeper from a tight angle to hand the Super Falcons a 3-1 lead.

The 29-year-old pulled off her jersey and ran to the sideline to celebrate her goal with her teammates, getting a yellow card in the process.

Her iconic photo has since stirred fans on social media, with some questioning her faith and morality.

A Twitter user Olumide Oluyisola wrote, ”Good goal. But due to with so much indiscipline, she (Oshoala) just got an absolutely useless yellow card, which may become a problem for the team if they go far in the tournament.”

Journalist Debola Adebanjo leaped in Oshoala’s defence, saying the picture of her celebration will go viral across the globe.

“An icon is an icon. Oshoala’s shirtless celebration will be picked up by every media from now till the end of this World Cup. When you are big, you are just that big.”

Popular Nigerian comedian, Segun Ogundipe, popularly known as Lafup also weighed in on the conversation saying, “That jersey pull-off is a major move towards a deeper conversation, an epic example of balance for better.”

Sola Egunjobi also expressed fears that her yellow card doesn’t come back to haunt the Falcons.

He wrote, “Hope she doesn’t miss a key game after a second yellow card. We need to be careful about these thing in football.”

Ojoko Timipre expressed delight at her celebration.

“Never knew Asisat Oshoala had a flat stomach (tummy). I like girls with flat tummy and above all including her flat tummy she is better than Mudrky of Chelsea, Martial of Manchester United and Ferran Torres of FC Barcelona. She is the total package.”

Alexis Sanchez agrees Premier League return after Arsenal approach

Alexis Sanchez, the former Arsenal ace, is reportedly ready to agree to a Premier League return with Nottingham Forest.

Despite his hopes of rebuilding bridges with the Gunners being rejected, Alexis is reportedly ready to accept an offer from Nottingham Forest.

Alexis Sanchez, formerly of Arsenal and Manchester United, is ready to agree a Premier League return with Nottingham Forest after Arsenal snub, according to reports from Chile.

The Chilean forward’s desire to return to Arsenal was thwarted, as the club focuses on youth development and sustainability.

After an impressive stint with Marseille, Alexis seeks a new home in England’s top-flight, putting his injury-plagued time at Manchester United behind him.

Alexis Sanchez was reportedly looking forward to returning to familiar grounds this summer as the end of his contract with Marseille left him without a club.

The Chilean forward had his sights set on Arsenal, where he had arguably experienced the pinnacle of his career.

However, Arsenal’s firm commitment to youth development and sustainability led to a hard pass on the veteran forward’s request.

Now, it seems he’s set to sign a deal with Nottingham Forest that would see him return to England where he scored 80 goals, with 45 assists, for Arsenal along with five goals and nine assists for Manchester United.

Alexis enjoyed a successful stint at Olympique de Marseille last season, scoring 14 goals in 35 games.

After disappointing spells at Manchester United and Inter Milan, and a failure to renew his contract with Marseille, the 34-year-old Chilean international is reportedly ready to forego Champions League football and substantial wages to rejoin England’s top-flight league.

Niger’s army backs military coup

Mohamed Bazoum

Niger’s army command on Thursday declared support for a coup instigated the previous day by soldiers of the presidential guard, saying its priority was to avoid destabilising the country.

In a statement signed by the army chief of staff, it said to “preserve the physical integrity” of the president and his family and avoid “a deadly confrontation that could create a bloodbath and affect the security of the population.’’

Also, in a video communique, a man identified as Colonel-Major Amadou Abdramane and flanked by several apparent soldiers, announced, “We have decided to put an end to the regime that you know,” citing a deteriorating security situation in the country and “poor economic and social governance.”

President Mohamed Bazoum and Foreign Minister Hassoumi Massoudou earlier urged democratic forces in the country to resist the power grab, as Western officials said the status of the coup attempt was unclear.

The soldiers said in a late-night televised address that Bazoum had been stripped of power and the republic’s institutions had been suspended, marking the seventh coup in West and Central Africa since 2020.

They earlier cut off the presidential palace in the capital Niamey, with the president inside.

Bazoum, in a social media posting on Thursday morning, vowed to protect “hard-won” democratic gains in a country that is a pivotal ally for Western powers helping fight an insurgency in the Sahel region.

Massoudou also called on “democrats and patriots” to make the “attempted coup” fail, according to a posting on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Niamey was quiet on Thursday morning as citizens awoke to heavy rain, closed borders and a nationwide curfew imposed by the coup instigators.

Massoudou said not all of the army was involved in the coup attempt, and a number of Western officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters there was no evidence on the ground that the armed forces supported it.

Monthly N8000 Cash Transfer: A Movement Without Motion?

Written by Jideofor Adibe

monthly N8000

The recent approval by the Senate of the request by President Tinubu for the borrowing of $800m from the World Bank has been raising concerns among Nigerians. The angst is not just about the danger of further increasing the stockpile of our already unsustainable debt level but also of whether borrowing for consumption – in this case borrowing to enable the government transfer the sum of N8,000 per month over six months to 12 million poor households – is the best way of cushioning the inflationary impacts of the removal of fuel subsidy and flotation of the Naira on the poor in Nigeria. It should be recalled that President Bola Tinubu in a letter to the Senate   explained that the loan would be used to scale up the national social safety net programme. He also claimed that the monthly social cash transfer would have “a multiplier effect on about 60 million households”

There are several issues that are embedded in this discourse:

One, the discourse on social protection triggered largely by the conditional cash transfer of N5,000 per month to some households under the Buhari government, is a worthy conversation. This is especially so given the increasing incidence of poverty in the country at a time the traditional social safety nets such as the extended family system are becoming weaker as the society becomes more individualistic. The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, established on August 21 2019 via an executive pronouncement by President Buhari, we were told, received a monthly transfer of N500bn from the CBN. There are ongoing controversies over its programme design, in particular how it chose its poor households, and whether its alleged cash transfers really got to its intended targets.

Two, that the Tinubu government should sustain the conversation on social protection is also in order. There are three issues that especially miff most Nigerians in the new conversation about social protection: the first is trying to tie it to cushioning the inflationary impact of the removal of subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit (fuel) and the flotation of the Naira. The second is that the money for the proposed cash transfer has to be borrowed from the World Bank and the transfer is to last for only six months.  The third is the lack of empirically verifiable impact assessment of the four-year cash transfer programme by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs which allegedly has been engaged in such transfers since 2019. For any social protection programme to have the buy-in of the populace, there must be clear evidence that it is capable of delivering on its promise. A 2016 book jointly published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the United Nations Children’s Fund and Oxford University Press, entitled ‘From Evidence to Action: The Story of Cash Transfers and Impact Evaluation in Sub-Saharan Africa’, made this point very eloquently. According to the book, for “impact evaluation to be effective in influencing policy in a given context, they need to be embedded in the ongoing process of policy and programme design. Much of the policy impact lies in the credibility of the programme created by having an evaluation as well as a learning environment where implementation and design issues are addressed. Programmes can thus be promoted and directed in a manner in which evidence is brought to bear as needed in the process of decision making”. Not only do we not have any impact assessment of how far the disbursements to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs impacted on poverty reduction, the number of Nigerians falling into the absolute poor bracket has paradoxically been increasing despite the programme. The World Bank for instance informed us that more than four million Nigerians fell into the absolute poverty trap in the first six months of the year (with another 7.1 million set to join if the impact of the removal of subsidies is not well managed). Besides, the Ministry has been less than transparent in its operations. For example, it claimed to have spent over N500m in school feeding and conditional cash transfers in Ogun and Lagos states as well as in Abuja (hardly among the poor areas of the country) during the COVID19-lockdown.

Three, giving conditional cash transfer of N8000 per month to 12 million households amounts to moving subsidy from one item that potentially benefits all demographics to subsidizing one demographic that may probably not be the worst hit by the inflationary impacts of removing subsidy on fuel because most of the very poor Nigerians live in rural areas, not very far from their farms, and do not depend substantially on markets for their social reproduction.  While I believe that the subsidies on PMS have become unsustainable, I am equally of the view that effectively checkmating the fraud in the subsidy regime and drastically reducing the level of the subsidy (rather than removing it in its entirety) will be more productive. For instance, maintaining a level of subsidy on PMS and fertilizer will also mean subsidizing food, manufacturing (because most depend on generators) and the Middle class (who are the most productive segment of the population). Maintaining a level of subsidy on PMS will cascade throughout the entire value chain of the country and therefore better than trying to narrowly target a particular demographic.

Four, while the Tinubu government has done relatively well in trying to run an inclusive government (compared to Buhari) and has received deserved accolades for that, he risks squandering the honeymoon he seems to be enjoying from most Nigerians if he fails to appreciate the depth of the hardship in the country and that what is needed are measures that will boost production, create employment and make life more tolerable for most Nigerians  rather than cash transfers that seem to have been not properly thought through. More importantly, the President must avoid being captured by some political jobbers who seem to believe that every criticism of his programmes are coming only from the opposition or a certain ethnic demographic. That was precisely what some aides made the Buhari government believe when the likes of Femi Adesina labelled such people ‘wailing wailers’. Ironically today, despite Buhari’s modest achievements in the field of providing infrastructure and using personal diplomacy to secure top positions in some international organisations for some Nigerians, the ‘wailing wailers’ seem to have been vindicated. Even before he fully exhausted his tenure, Buhari repeatedly said he was tired and was looking forward to be as far away from Abuja as possible once he handed over power to a successor.

More than 92,000 African students were denied US student visas- Study

by Ngozi Ekugo

US student visa, African Students

A study has shown that Africa has the highest rate of disproportionate student visa refusals to the US compared to other regions.

Findings indicate that 54% of African student visa applications were rejected in 2022, compared to only 21% from North America and 9% from Europe. South American applicants also experienced an increase in refusal rates, rising from 7% in 2015 to 31% in 2022.

Rajika Bhandari, a senior adviser at the Presidents’ Alliance, emphasized that these figures provide concrete evidence of disparate outcomes for students from certain countries, particularly African nations.

Possible factors for the refusals

The Presidents’ Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration produced a report that suggests that a combination of factors, including reduced student mobility and limited US consular staff due to the Covid-19 pandemic, may be contributing to this rise.

The report also raised concerns about the potential influence of national policies and negative public narratives towards international students and immigrants, which could be reflected in the visa refusal.

Bhandari remarked that the situation was a “missed opportunity” for the US as it prevents the country’s universities from benefiting from a diverse student population and restricts access to global talent.

Highest visa applications regardless.

Over the eight years analyzed, actual numbers show that more than 92,000 potentially qualified African students were denied visas. These numbers unequivocally suggest that a large percentage are from Nigeria.

Recall that Nairametrics reported the alarming rate of US visa refusals to Nigerian students stating that the rate of US F1 visa denials reached a new high in 2022, with as many as two in three applicants denied.

It also stated that based on observations from an educational consultant, the main challenges faced by many individuals from Sub-Saharan Africa seeking to study abroad include difficulty articulating the reasons for choosing their preferred program, sponsorship by an extended family member, inadequate funds, being older than the typical age for undergraduate studies, unexplained gap years, and others.

Despite this, there was a strong demand from the continent, with the number of African students enrolling in US higher education increasing more than any other region in recent years.

Appeal to US Congress

Overall, the report suggests that students from the Global South (nations with relatively low levels of economic and industrial development, typically located to the south of more industrialized nations) may be subjected to different standards compared to other countries and calls for the US Congress to modernize the nation’s immigration laws.

Perhaps this will reduce the perceived disparity in visa approval standards.

DSS rearrest of Emefiele on alleged terrorism ground, void, laughable — ACJHR

By Idowu Bankole

A civil society organisation (CSO), African Centre for Justice and Human Rights (ACJHR), has described the rearrest of the suspended CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, by the Department of State Services (DSS) on the grounds of terrorism as void and laughable, saying an earlier court judgement had voided the terrorism allegations him and barred the secret police from arresting him.

The secret police and officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) had clashed over the agency’s move to take custody of the suspended and embattled Apex Bank Chief after Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court in Lagos admitted Emefiele to bail in the sum of the N20 million on Tuesday. Eventually, DSS operatives took custody of Emefiele after the physical fight.

The human rights organisation, in a statement by its strategic communication consultant, Mr. Abubakar Isa, on Wednesday, said it’s laughable that a supposed Intelligence Agency rearrested someone on claims of something that has already been ruled on by a competent court of law.

The statement reads, “it’s laughable that a supposed Intelligence Agency, rearrested Emefiele on claims of something that has already been ruled on by a competent court of law. Is the DSS now saying that the judiciary is wrong, incompetent and their judgement doesn’t matter so long as it doesn’t favour them?

“Months ago, Justice M. A. Hassan of a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) restrained the Department of State Services (DSS) and four others from arresting or detaining Emefiele over alleged terrorism financing. The judge held that the DSS acted wrongfully and illegally in instigating President Muhammadu Buhari against Godwin Emefiele in respect of the exercise of his statutory duty relating to the issuance of monetary policies and directives in the interest of the National Security and economy.

“Again recently a High Court sitting in Abuja presided over by Justice Hamza Muazu ordered DSS to immediately release Emefiele, from detention or charge him to court. It’s clear that the secret police has a vendetta against Emefiele because despite several court rulings the operatives have refused to obey any and have continued to disrespect the judiciary. It’s a huge disgrace what happened at the federal high court in Lagos yesterday. President Tinubu should not allow the DSS to tarnish his hard-earned reputation as a world-renowned democrat.”

Emefiele: Lawyers condemn DSS, warders’ clash as family protests re-arrest

Condemnation has trailed the conduct of the Department of State Services at the Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday during the court appearance of the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.

The DSS took Emefiele before the court for arraignment on Tuesday but rearrested and whisked him away despite that the court granted him bail and ordered that he should be remanded at the Ikoyi facility of the Nigerian Correctional Services.

The situation led to a clash between DSS operatives and prison officials.

Emefiele was arraigned on two counts of illegal firearms possession before Justice Nicholas Oweibo.

He was brought before the court in a white Hilux van accompanied by heavily-armed DSS operatives.

On arrival on the court premises on Tuesday morning, Emefiele, who wore a white jalamia and looked frail, was immediately whisked into the courtroom.

When the charges were read to him, Emefiele, however, pleaded not guilty.

The defence lawyer, Joseph Daudu (SAN), who led four other senior advocates, moved an application for Emefiele’s bail.

But the DSS counsel, Mrs Nkiru Jones-Nebo, objected to the bail, saying she had not been served with a copy of the application.

However, Justice Oweibo, in a ruling granted Emefiele bail in the sum of N20m with one surety in like sum.

The judge, however, ordered that he should be remanded in the Ikoyi custodial facility of the Nigeria Correctional Services pending the perfection of the bail conditions.

The judge, subsequently, adjourned till November 14 for trial.

However, heavy drama ensued after the court proceedings, as DSS operatives laid siege outside the courtroom to re-arrest Emefiele.

The situation, which led to a face-off between DSS operatives and men of the Nigerian Correctional Services, saw Emefiele stuck in the courtroom long after the conclusion of court proceedings.

In the ensuing battle for control,  the prison commander was ruffled and his uniform was torn, while he was being dragged towards the DSS van by DSS operatives who swarmed on him.

The situation angered Emefiele’s family members and lawyers, who accused the DSS of acting lawlessly and disrespecting the court.

A man who gave his name as George and introduced himself as Emefiele’s brother described the development as unfortunate in a democratic dispensation.

“Three courts have said release him on bail, he’s not running away for God’s sake. He has served this nation for nine years, where is he going to go to? All his life is in Nigeria here.

“You can imagine a situation where two military federal government apparatus are fighting themselves, manhandling the commander of the prison commission, it is a disgrace to this nation, it is a complete disgrace,” George said.

Condemning the development in an interview with The PUNCH, human rights lawyer, Ebun Olu-Adegoruwa (SAN), said, “I believe that the President is aware of the actions of the DSS; it is giving a bad image to this administration, where security agencies are engaging in a physical scuffle in open court to the extent of tearing their uniforms, which is a symbol of authority of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and desecrating the hallowed chambers of the court without respect for the judge.

“The videos I saw today was a total contempt of the authority of the judiciary because what we are saying is that once anybody is within the premises of the court, you have to respect the authority.”

Similarly, Prof Sam Erugo (SAN), said the refusal of the DSS to allow the correctional services to take Emefiele into their custody marked another embarrassing day for the Nigerian government.

He said, “It is very obvious that DSS is acting as if there is no rule of law in Nigeria. I think somebody has to tell them that they are going to the extreme.

“I think they should tell them that there is rule of law in Nigeria.”

Another lawyer, Okerechidum Nnamdi, said no institution of government should be above the law.

Nnamdi said, “They can’t be above the law because they are a creation of a piece of  legislation; they can’t be above the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; as they must act in accordance with the law.”

The defendant’s lead counsel,   Daudu, also decried the development.

“He has been brought to court and has been granted bail.  You can see the vehicles of the DSS and that of the Correctional Service. I must tell you that because of the delay in perfecting the bail conditions, the officials of the Ikoyi Prison have legal obligations to take him to Ikoyi.

“Ikoyi Prison is not far from the court and it’s a federal institution. Why they want him in their custody is what beats my imagination. But, what is more, devastating is the fact that the DSS came to court with two counts and the court, in its discretion, granted him bail, but you still want to arrest the person, because the court said to take him to the correctional centre.”

Tinubu to forward ministerial list to Senate in 48 hours – Senate Leader

The Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, has said President Bola Tinubu will submit the list of the ministerial nominees to the Senate before Thursday.

Mr Bamidele made the disclosure on Tuesday at an event organised in Abuja to celebrate his 60th birthday and the presentation of his book titled “Leadership through Communication.”

Mr Tinubu has until 28 July to send his ministerial nominees to the Senate for screening and confirmation, in line with the constitution.

According to Section 42 of the constitution, the president and state governors have, from the date they are sworn in, a 60-day window within which to appoint ministers and commissioners.

The delay in announcing the cabinet ministers has led to the emergence of several lists of ministers, which the government itself disowned.

FIRS

In the last few weeks, several lists of nominees have surfaced in the media. In some lists, names of the president’s political allies and former governors featured prominently.

The president’s spokesperson, Dele Alake, had also debunked speculations that the list has been leaked.

List to arrive at Senate in 48 hours

Mr Bamidele said Mr Tinubu called him over the phone Tuesday morning to felicitate him on his birthday and told him that he would not be able to attend the birthday ceremony because of the communication he needed to submit to the Senate in the next 48 hours.

“President Tinubu told me this morning when he called to greet me for my birthday lecture this morning around 10:03 a.m. that he will not be able to come to the birthday lecture because of the communication he needed to submit to the Senate in the next 48 hours.

“So, Mr President prayed for me. We should tell the rest of Nigerians to pray for him to be able to make the right decision within the next 24 hours so that when Nigerians hear the list of his ministers, they will say yes, this is uncommon,” Mr Bamidele said.

In his remarks, the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, commended the Senate Leader for his loyalty to the president.

Mr Akpabio felicitated the leader of the Senate and prayed for long life.

BBC apologizes for reporter’s ‘inappropriate’ question to Morocco women’s team captain

The BBC has apologized for an “inappropriate” question one of its reporters asked the captain of the Morocco women’s national team.

At a media conference ahead of Morocco’s Women’s World Cup opener against Germany, a reporter from the British news organization’s World Service asked Ghizlane Chebbak: “In Morocco, it’s illegal to have a gay relationship. Do you have any gay players in your squad and what’s life like for them in Morocco?”

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - JULY 20: Katrina Gorry of Australia looks on during the FIFA Women's World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023 Group B match between Australia and Ireland at Stadium Australia on July 20, 2023 in Sydney, Australia.

Channel Seven commentator criticized for 'motherhood' comment about Australia star Katrina Gorry during Women's World Cup match

The press conference moderator interjected, saying: “Sorry, this is a very political question, so we’ll just stick to questions relating to football.”

“No, it’s not political,” the journalist replied. “It’s about people, it’s got nothing to do with politics. Please let her answer the question.”

A BBC spokesperson told CNN: “We recognise that the question was inappropriate. We had no intention to cause any harm or distress.”

There was then one more question before the press conference was ended.

According to Human Rights Watch, “Moroccan law also criminalizes what it refers to as acts of ‘sexual deviancy’ between members of the same sex. Article 489 of the penal code punishes same-sex relations with prison terms of up to three years and fines of up to 1,000 dirhams ($91).”

The Athletic’s Steph Yang, who was in the room, said that “some members of the Moroccan media were audibly dismayed by the question.”

Shireen Ahmed, a reporter for CBC Sports who was also in the room, wrote that the reporter was “completely out of line.”

“Harm reduction matters and posing the question to the captain or coach was unnecessary,” she added.

“Asking a player about her teammates and whether they are gay and how it affects them when you know it is not permissible is bizarre and out of line. The captain cannot out players nor comment on policy bc [because] it could be dangerous for them, too,” Ahmed wrote.

“If reporting harms someone, it is not only unethical but dangerous.”

CNN has learnt that a FIFA representative addressed the BBC journalist on site immediately after the press conference had ended.

The Moroccan Football Federation did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment.

Morocco began its 2023 Women’s World Cup campaign with a heavy 6-0 defeat by Germany on Monday.

World soccer governing body FIFA is allowing a variety of different armbands that highlight “a range of social causes” to be worn at the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

During the tournament, team captains are each allowed to wear an armband chosen from eight different social causes, including gender equality, inclusion and peace.

There is no explicit mention of LGBTQ rights in Women’s World Cup armbands, beyond the themes of “gender equality” and “inclusion.”

Stakeholders Petition Tinubu, Reject Licensed Agents In Expatriate Quota Allocation

Stakeholders comprising companies and organisations which apply for expatriate quota in Nigeria have written a petition to President Ahmed Bola Tinubu on the processing and allocation of the vital documents for job engagement for foreign nationals with unique expertise.

allegedly accused officials of the Ministry of Interior of sharp practices thereby denying the federal government of revenue generation.

The petitioners under the aegis of Concerned Stakeholders of Expatriate Quota Sector also alleged that the activities of the processing agents expose Nigeria to cyber terrorism, exploitation and reduction of direct foreign investment, and cripple ease of doing business in the country.

They asked the federal government to conduct a forensic investigation and stop the use of licensed agents and contractors from having access to sensitive documents with national and economic security implications for Nigeria.

The stakeholders also alleged that officials of the Ministry of Interior were abusing their offices, claiming that their actions had denied the country huge revenues.

In the petition they wrote to Tinubu, the Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives and copied to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, National Security Adviser (NSA) to the President and others, the authors said they have been paying huge amount of money in taxes to the federal government and were not carried along in the rather sudden policy review that stopped civil servants with cognate professional and technical experience from handling the process.

Titled: “A Petition And An Urgent Call For A Forensic Investigation Into The High Scale Corruption, Fraudulent Activities, Abuse Of Office And Mismanagement Of Processing Of Expatriate Quota By Officials Of The Federal Ministry Of Interior”, it was signed by the national coordinator, Mr. Ene Utobong, national secretary Shegun Adewale and national publicity secretary Ismaila Badejo.

Utobong said, “This was unlike the previous case when they wanted to review the guideline in 2021, they openly advertised in several national newspapers inviting all stakeholders to be part of the review and that produced the 2022 Revised Handbook on Expatriate Quota Administration.

The stakeholders said expatriate quota processing is “a highly sensitive multi-sectoral process because it involves different companies in security, engineering, construction, oil and gas, information technology (ICT), education, health, and electricity, agriculture, among others.

“This makes it of utmost importance to Nigeria’s national interest as it is directly connected to Nigeria’s national security, economic security, growth and development. It also makes way for huge direct foreign investments and flow of foreign exchange into Nigeria, our country, which is why it should be handled by the best experts who are professionally and technically certified and have gone through security scrutiny,” the group said.

It posited that the sudden transfer of duty from ministry officials who have been carrying out the process of approval and certification for companies and organisations applying for expatriate quota smoothly without any issues to so-called licensed agents was done in secrecy and hurriedly.

According to the petitioners, “Those so-called licensed agents are cronies and relations of the top Ministry officials with no technical or professional knowledge or experience who went and registered companies as agents to screen multinational companies.

“Thorough checks revealed that the contractors and licensed agents are mushroom companies hurriedly registered by top Ministry officials.

“Top Ministry officials and their aides are using the so-called licensed agents who are indeed cronies and family relations who are used as fronts to siphon public funds collected through the licensed agents through sharp practices.

“Big national and multinational companies and organizations that have been in the business for decades are being denied Expatriate Quota allocation while newly registered companies with no credible record are favoured instead.

“Some of the sharp practices include issuing out fake Expatriate Quota allocations where they use the highly sensitive documents for questionable business activities within and outside Nigeria.

“The entire current process has the capacity to undermine Nigeria’s national security through sabotage. The Nigerian government is losing so much revenue to fraudulent and corrupt Ministry officials and their accomplices, the contractors.

“Exposing Nigeria’s economic intelligence and security to questionable elements without technical and professional backgrounds to access classified data and pass the same to enemies of Nigeria.

“These sharp and fraudulent practices expose the Nigerian economy, especially the major players, by exposing them to cyber-attack through hacking.

“It defrauds Nigeria of huge revenue through diversion of funds into private pockets and bank accounts,”, the stakeholders said.

Nigeria has disappointed Africa, world — Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, on Monday, decried Nigeria’s inability to live up to expectations since it got independence about 63 years ago, stressing that the country had not only disappointed itself but also Africa and the world.

Obasanjo disclosed this while delivering the keynote address at the public presentation of the book titled ‘Reclaiming the Jewel of Africa,’ written by former Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, who also served as Minister of Finance, Olusegun Aganga.

The book was unveiled by President Bola Tinubu through his Special Adviser on Monetary Policy, Olawale Edun. The event, which was held in Abuja, witnessed a large turnout of past and current senior government officials, as former President Goodluck Jonathan and Obasanjo spoke virtually.

In his address at the programme, Obasanjo said, “Over the last 63 years, we have not lived up to expectations. We have disappointed ourselves; we have disappointed Africa; we have disappointed the black race.

He, however, stated that “what Segun (Aganga) has tried to identify, itemise and recommend in his book is the way forward.

“But the beginning of charting a new course for ourselves is to admit our failure because we have not always put the round peg in the round hole.

“We are carried along by ego and emotion of self, selfishness and self-centeredness, ethnic and religious jingoism, with total lack of understanding of the world we live in and gross misunderstanding of what development entails and how to move fast and continuously on the trajectory of development.”

The former President further identified two of the major issues that were interrelated in terms of factors for all-round development.

“These are peace and security, which we cannot achieve without justice, equity and inclusive society. And telling ourselves the truth, we have not done well on these scores in the recent past—in the last decade and a half.

“I will also point at the issue of education, where over 20 million children that should be in school are not in school. We do not need an oracle to tell us the consequences of that for tomorrow,” Obasanjo stated.

He said the skill acquisition, empowerment and employment of youth would seem to be ignored or not appreciated.

“We do not need to look far for the remote causes of banditry, Boko Haram, kidnapping and other organised crimes.

“We are living dangerously on a keg of gunpowder, driving more people into poverty through good policies poorly and thoughtlessly implemented or bad policy and no policy at all,” he stated.

Eddie Nketiah on Chelsea release with Declan Rice and not accepting Gabriel Jesus back up

Proving people wrong is something Eddie Nketiah is used to by now. When Gabriel Jesus went down injured in Brazil's World Cup clash with Cameroon, many questioned whether the Hale Ender would be able to lead the line and keep Arsenal's title hopes alive. With five goal contributions in nine starts he more than answered them before an injury of his own curtailed his run in the side.

Silencing doubters is a habit the 24-year-old has had to do from nearly the very beginning of his career. At just 14-years-of-age he was released from Chelsea's academy. It was only a brief setback in his fledgling career, but the disappointment Nketiah felt is something that he admits was still tough to take.

"As a 13/14-year-old boy, especially when you’re used to doing something… You go to Chelsea every other day, you’re known as the boy who plays for Chelsea," he says. "It’s part of your identity.

"Accepting that being gone is hard to take. Luckily for me I have a great family around me who have always supported me, and I think what was really good for me was that the gap was not too long between being released and having an opportunity to go to Arsenal.

"It was probably four or five days, so it allowed me not to stay too down for too long and be able to refocus and know there’s a another challenge which can be even more beautiful. That’s the way I looked at it. I had to have a lot of maturity I did have my down days.

"That’s your dream, to get scouted, you get accepted, grow part of that academy, you want to go all the way. But sometimes this is life. I am a very religious person, I believe in God. I know everything happens for a reason."

Timber reveals why he chose to join Arsenal transfer amid Man United snub.

Released on that very same day was none other than Nketiah's future Arsenal teammate Declan Rice. It's taken a decade for the pair to link up again, but Nketiah believes the early disappointment the pair suffered has been key to getting them where they are now in their careers.

"It’s just about knowing this is the path that was chosen for you," he says. "Unfortunately it wasn’t down this path, but there’s also other routes to the top. There’s players that stayed there (Chelsea) and didn’t reach the levels that myself or Declan have now. This is just life, it isn’t always going to go your way. Having that experience really shaped me as a person and how I am able to deal with disappointments and prove again and again. It’s the mentality I have, it’s how to try to look at life."

This mentality will be key as he seeks to prove more people wrong across the coming season. With Gabriel Jesus firmly established as Arsenal's number nine, and Leandro Trossard having impressed in the role at points last season, Nketiah faces has yet another battle on his hands in order to get regular game time. It has led many to suggest that the 24-year-old has perhaps taken the easy route by choosing to stay at Arsenal instead of seeking more regular minutes elsewhere. Nketiah however, could not disagree more.

"No I don’t think I have accepted (being a back up) and I will never accept that," he says. "That’s not my mentality. That’s not why I signed here to sit and be second best. I want to be the best, I want to play and that’s the mentality I have. I realise I might not play every game and that’s the coach’s decision but it’s never going to be my mentality to accept not playing and I am going to always push in training to get opportunities to show why I think I should be playing and to give the manager a headache. Most players should have that mentality

"There’s ways to do it. There is no point sitting around and moaning every day. The manager’s door is always open so you can have conversations but you have to show it on the pitch, there is no point sitting outside the pitch and complaining. You have to show it when you get on the pitch and that is what I tried to do last season. I did the same and that is what I will continue to do.

"I want to play as much as possible so I can help the team. It’s about accepting when you can’t play, how can you help the team and how can you contribute. The way to show it is show it on the pitch rather than make noise off it"

Nketiah's path is interesting to compare to the man who is following in footsteps. Folarin Balogun has also made the step up from Hale End to Arsenal's first team via a loan spell elsewhere, but it seems the American could look to take a different path. football.london understands that Arsenal will listen offers of around £50million for Balogun who has interest from Inter Milan among others. While Nketiah doesn't want to be drawn too much on the intricacies of his younger teammates situation, he is willing to admit that he has confidence that Balogun will make the right decision this summer.

Be Like Nelson Mandela, Don’t Celebrate Him, Soyinka Tells Nigerians

He gave the advice yesterday in Asaba, the Delta State capital during the 2023 United Nations Nelson Mandela International Day Celebration.

He called on Nigerians to do the best they can to create a better Nigeria.

According to him, Mandela did his best when he was in prison, out of prison and as president, saying that planting trees could be a way to live like him as that would immortalise him and make people remember his good deeds.

Soyinka, who was the special guest of honour , said, “We have many Mandela among us. His travails among them are not over. We should do everything to free them and celebrate them wherever they are to save the coming generation.”

The founder of Mandela Gardens, Dr Newton Jibunoh, said he was happy celebrating the late South African leader with mixed feelings because he lived most of his life for the emancipation of his people, but that at the other hand the world is not yet a better place.

“ When Mandela contested for president, he did not have money to buy the form. In Nigeria today you need N100 million to buy form for presidential contest,” Jibunoh lamented.

While advising Nigerians to think about the sacrifices Mandela made o make the world a habitable place, he said we have serious responsibility to make sure the world is made a better place to live.

CFAO manager, Aissatou Diouf and the permanent secretary, Delta State Ministry of Environment, Dr Minnie Osaji, said Mandela, as an international peace maker, was a role model worldwide.

Oyedele, chair of Tinubu’s tax reform committee, resigns from PwC

Taiwo Oyedele, a fiscal policy partner and Africa tax leader at PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC), has resigned from his position in the organisation.

Mr Oyedele announced his resignation via his verified Twitter handle on Wednesday.

He explained that the move was to enable him to focus fully with undivided attention on his new role as the Chair of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform Committee.

Earlier in July, President Bola Tinubu approved the establishment of a Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms and appointed Mr Oyedele as the chairman of the committee.

The government said the establishment of the committee reflects Mr Tinubu’s commitment to addressing challenges and bringing about transformative reforms in fiscal policy and taxation.

The committee’s primary objective, according to the Nigerian government, is to enhance revenue collection efficiency, ensure transparent reporting, and promote the effective utilisation of tax and other revenues to boost citizens’ tax morale, foster a healthy tax culture, and drive voluntary compliance.

Announcing his decision on Wednesday, Mr Oyedele said: “After over two decades at PwC, I have made the hard but necessary decision to exit the firm.”

He said: “This is to enable me to focus fully with undivided attention on my new role as the Chair of the Presidential Fiscal Policy & Tax Reform Committee, which I consider an important national assignment.”

Since his appointment, there have been concerns over the propriety of Mr Oyedele’s dual positions as chair of the government’s tax reform committee and PwC Africa tax leader.

Shortly after his appointment, some Twitter users raised concerns about conflict of interest and other ethical issues that may affect his ability to perform well in both positions.

On Wednesday, Mr Oyedele noted that his resignation would erase all ethical concerns raised by critics since his appointment.

“This decision will also prevent any potential distractions from real or perceived conflict of interest. Thank you all once again for your support, best wishes and prayers,” he wrote.

“May God bless you all, and may God bless Nigeria,” he said.

Mr Oyedele joined PwC as an associate in 2002, immediately after completing his NYSC.

He rose through the ranks of Senior Associate, Assistant Manager, Manager, and Senior Manager, Fiscal Policy Partner and West Africa Tax Leader.

Nigerian Army intercepts truckload of ammunition to S-East

Troops of the Nigerian Army, Saturday, intercepted an international smuggling syndicate while transporting a truckload of smuggled ammunition to Anambra State, Nigeria’s southeast.

Army spokesperson, Onyema Nwachukwu, disclosed this in a statement yesterday.

Nwachukwu, a brigadier-general, said the troops, acting on a tip-off, made the interception during “a meticulous and rigorous” stop and search operation along Ajilete-Owode Road in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State, south-west Nigeria.

The army spokesperson said the truck- with registration number ENU 697 XY- was loaded with different ammunition.

He listed the ammunition to include 720 packets of red star cartridges of 12 calibres which contained 25 cartridges per packet, totalling 18,000 cartridges; and  250 packets of live black cartridges containing ten packets each and totalling 2500 cartridges of the same calibre.

Nwachukwu said the troops had arrested two suspects and were helping in investigations by the military.

He gave the suspects’ names as Eric Seworvor, a Ghanaian national, and Lukman Sani, the truck driver.

“Information gathered during preliminary investigation revealed that the ammunition, which was surreptitiously concealed in a supposed empty truck, was imported from Mali  and itercepted at the  Idiroko International Border, where the criminals had successfully beaten  several other checkpoints en route their final destination in Onitsha, Anambra State, where they intended to deliver the illegal ammunition,” he said.

The army spokesperson said it took the intervention of the troops to stop the syndicate from smuggling the illegal weapons into the southeast state, stressing that the suspects would have unleashed terror on residents of the region if they had succeeded.

He appealed to Nigerians to continue to support the army and other security agencies with information that will assist them in tackling security challenges in the country.

The Chief of Army Staff, Taoreed Lagbaja, has commended the troops for their commitment to securing the lives and properties of Nigerians,   Nwachukwu said.

agencies to provide security for all Nigerians.

Gundogan talks Xavi, Lewandowski, Guardiola, Pedri, Silva, Busquets at Barcelona presentation

Ilkay Gundogan is perhaps Barcelona’s most awaited signing of the summer. The treble-winning former Manchester City captain moved to Catalonia on a free transfer earlier this summer, and the club officially unveiled him as a Blaugrana today.

Gundogan will join Xavi Hernandez in pre-season training on Tuesday and will travel to the United States with the squad to take part in the friendlies.

Monday’s events began with a private signing of his contract as a player of FC Barcelona at the offices of Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper. The 32-year-old then spoke on the field and began with an account of his early associations with the club as a fan.

“Well, my first impressions are extremely positive. I am very excited and grateful to be part of this club. I remember when I was a kid watching Barça every game, on weekdays, on weekends. From Rijkaard, Pep of course.”

The veteran went on to highlight how many of his idols were players of the Catalan institution and the honour he felt donning the garnet-and-blue stripes.

“I had many players here as an idol, who are now legends. So I am very proud to be here in front of all of you in this magnificent club.”

Gundogan then formally thanked Joan Laporta, Mateu Alemany, and Jordi Cruyff for their relentless work to make the signing possible saying,

“I want to thank you President, the whole board, Mateu Alemany, Jordi Cruyff who was a part of me being here. It’s amazing to be here, and as I said, it’s a pleasure and a pride to be here and I can’t wait for the first game. I want to win, I want to keep winning here.”

He wound up his on-field comments with a brief mention of the quality of Barcelona’s squad and the rise of a special team in the years to come.

“I think there is great potential in this team, last season was very good and I will do everything possible and all the best to be able to help the team. The next few years will surely be better and more special. Visca El Barça.”

In the press conference that followed, Gundogan showed more gratitude to the president and sporting director, and Xavi, amongst others, for making the move possible.

“Thanks to the president and all the staff for making this possible. Especially Xavi, when I talked to him I knew he was on the right track. It’s an opportunity to show who I am, new team, new country, new city and even though I’m an age, I still have a lot to show.”

The German also spoke about how his experience would blend well with the Catalans’ young core, saying: “In these years I have been able to gain a lot of experience and with this very young team combined with experience, we can do great things.”

In his farewell letter to Manchester City, the midfielder revealed that Barcelona was the only club he would leave for. He highlighted his clarity of thought over the same, saying:

“Being able to be a player of this club makes me feel very proud. Wearing this shirt was a dream, on a couple of occasions I was able to get closer but it wasn’t the time. Luckily the time was today and I am very proud to be able to be a Barça player.”

On Robert Lewandowski, with whom he has already shared the dressing room for years, he said:

“I talked to him before the holidays. He told me about the club, the lifestyle, the city, and what it feels likes to be part of Barça. His words were very powerful. Ter Stegen also wrote to me. Their words did not influence me much but they helped, because I already had made the decision.”

Quizzed about the process of adaptation he would have to undergo at his new club, the UCL-winning captain expressed his confidence in coming out on the right side.

“I think I have the ability to adapt. The team has already won La Liga, we want to have more potential in the Champions League and I think we can have the confidence to do it. It’s a very big responsibility to be a Barça player, but I’m sure we will do it.”

Leaving the UCL-winning Manchester City was not an easy decision for the midfielder. He spoke about how "Xavi influenced his decision to leave and convinced him of the Blaugrana project.

“First of all, he made his ideas very clear. It looks a lot like what I’ve done with Manchester City. His directness, his character, made me reflect on him, also how he played. From the first moment, we had a very good connection.”

Commenting about Pep Guardiola’s reaction to his decision to join Barcelona, he said: “For me, it was important that he was the first to know. I expressed my gratitude to him, in a way I consider that he was happy and that when I needed anything about the club and about the city I would ask him for advice.”

The next question thrown at him was about the possibility of Kylian Mbappe joining Real Madrid and whether it would spice up the clash between the two giants. Gundogan modestly answered saying,

“It doesn’t matter who plays in Madrid, we want to beat Madrid with or without Mbappe, we have to win by looking at us not at the rivals.”

Bernardo Silva has been strongly linked with a move to Barcelona in recent days, and Gundogan was unsurprisingly quizzed about the same.

“He is an incredible player, I think he has many qualities to be a high-level player but he has a contract with City, so I can say little,” he said about his former teammate.

The German joins a team with some of the world’s best young talents. He acknowledged the same in his presser and spoke on what he would add to the squad.

“They are incredible, Gavi, Pedri, de Jong. I have experience, my life and my career have not been a bed of roses. I think my experience in recent years can help, both offensively and defensively. They are very talented young people who do better things than me. If I can give you 1%, I’ll be happy.”

He then commented on his ability to cover multiple positions and the possibility of playing in place of Sergio Busquets.

“I am ready, in recent years I think I have shown that I am able to show that I can play in different roles and I think I will be able to help where they need me.”

The veteran was then posed with a tricky question as to what Barcelona were lacking in the UCL. With all his years of experience, he gave a fitting reply, saying,

“Well, the Champions League is a very difficult and very competitive trophy. It’s so difficult, I say it from experience, for many years we were favorites with the City. Small details can make a difference. From the experience of having won the Champions League, I believe and I know that I can contribute something to get it.”

When asked if Xavi had spoken to him about a specific position he would have to cover at Barcelona, the 32-year-old revealed,

Xavi values that I am a versatile player. He hasn’t told me about a specific position, but I think I can combine with the different players and in different positions.”

Gundogan then went on to talk about his idols from Barcelona over the years, including players from various generations on his list.

“I remember Ronaldinho, although he is very different from me. I also admire Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets. Of this type of players, I like Busquets, silent. I consider that I am a very similar player. I want the team to win games, even if sometimes you are in the background.”

Finally, he set it straight that his decision to leave Manchester City had nothing to do with Guardiola or the English team’s management but was a personal choice and a chance to challenge himself.

“It’s not so much that Pep lacked. I’ve known him well, for 7 years, but I like challenges and constantly surpassing myself. All that the coach and the club have done to convince me, is that my desire to sign for the club has grown a lot.”

Laporta, Alemany welcome Gundogan to Barcelona

President Joan Laporta welcomed Gundogan to the club and elaborated on the long-drawn saga of his transfer.

“Welcome to Barcelona, Ilkay. An experienced and successful player who will help us a lot. Everyone is excited for your arrival, the fans, the staff, and the members of the club. I know that you made a massive effort to sign, and we would like to thank you.

“Ilkay, I know that you chose Barça over other higher offers because of our history and style. Due to your time at Manchester City, you understand our style of play better than most players. Thank you for choosing us. I know we’ll be successful with your help.”

The president then went on to acknowledge the contribution of various forces to ensure the success of the German’s move, saying,

“He is a player who has spoken for Xavi and you were the first player who asked us. I want to congratulate Mateu Alemany and his entire team. It has been a signing that has been simmered. Jordi Cruyff and Deco have also had their merit. Also Rafa Yuste.”

He then went on to highlight the strength of the squad with Gundogan’s incorporations and his aspirations of seeing the team win the UEFA Champions League and other competitions.

“I also like the tune that you and Xavi have. We are all very excited, we are seeing how the team is getting stronger and stronger. Now we want more, we want to compete for the Champions League.”

“We have a very powerful midfield. We are very excited, you come with experience and you have all the culés very excited. Now we are going on tour and you will have the opportunity to put yourself in the dynamics of the first team.”

Mateu Alemany was the next presence to grace the stage as he revealed how the idea of signing Gundogan was on the cards for a long time.

“The first day we talked about Gündogan was Christensen’s signing day. That day we commented that Ilkay should be the next one. We want to thank you for your decision, for choosing us in spite of other much higher economic offer
