Conor Gallagher ignores Mauricio Pochettino instruction in Chelsea vs Brighton clash

Connor Gallagher has had a good Premier League season with Chelsea but was sent off against Brighton at Stamford Bridge.

Connor Gallagher ignored Mauricio Pochettino’s instruction as he was sent off in Chelsea’s Premier League clash with Brighton.

Chelsea took a 2-0 lead with goals from Enzo Fernandes and Levi Colwill. However, shortly after the Seagulls pulled a goal back, Gallagher was given his marching orders after a clumsy tackle on Billy Gilmour.

Just last week, Pochettino was left frustrated as Reece James was shown a red card after seeing two yellow cards. The Blues went on to lose that match against Newcastle United 4-1.

As reported by football.london at the time, Pochettino said: “Look, this type of thing happens in football. Of course, (I am) disappointed because we should finish with a player but it happens and we need to accept.”

It was a rash piece of play from Gallagher - a player who had become a key cog in Mauricio Pochettino’s team. He will now miss the match in midweek against Manchester United after starting all 13 Premier League games up until this point.

However, there is hope for the 23-year-old, as Pochettino was forgiving towards James later in the week. The Blues boss had some words of encouragement for his captain.

"He feels sorry about the situation because it was tough for him and it was tough for the team, but it is always good when the player takes responsibility. He is doing really well.

"It's a thing that can happen in football. It's good when you realise because then you can learn for the future."

Given that Chelsea were able to see off their opponents, Pochettino may be able to offer similar words of calm to Gallagher. He will be expected to return to the starting XI against Everton next weekend.
