Chelsea news as revelations over Todd Boehly's search for a new manager last summer emerge before Mauricio Pochettino appointment

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly faced one of his biggest decisions in his short time at the club over the summer as he appointed his second permanent manager.

Thomas Tuchel lasted less than two months into the 2022/23 season and Graham Potter was sacked only seven months after replacing the German. Frank Lampard's second stint as manager, albeit until the end of the season, was a disaster as Chelsea recorded their joint-worst finish in the Premier League.

In the summer, an array of elite managers were linked with vacancy at Stamford Bridge. Zinedine Zidane, Luis Enrique and Jose Mourinho were all mentioned but it was Mauricio Pochettino who was handed the job - signing a two-year contract with an option for a further year.

The Argentine has won eight of his opening 17 games in charge at Chelsea. His appointment has continued to cause split opinion with the Blues sitting in tenth place in the Premier League table heading into Christmas.

A handful of results have placed doubts over his long-term future at the club, but it's understood that the former Tottenham head coach has the backing from the ownership. However, things could have been very different.

According to Dutch outlet AD, Boehly attempted to bring Feyenoord head coach Arne Slot to the Premier League before appointing Pochettino. Slot had also been on Daniel Levy's list to replace Antonio Conte at Tottenham prior to Ange Postecoglou's arrival.
