Manchester City legend rejected Real Madrid move

Real Madrid are arguably the biggest club in world football and it is a dream of many to join them one day. It is one of the key reasons why they have remained one of the best in Europe despite not even coming close to the figures that many Premier League clubs have splashed out over the years.

That does not mean that players have not turned down the chance to join Real Madrid over the years. In fact, some pretty big names have. One of them is David Silva.

Silva came through the ranks at Valencia and spent quite a few years there, establishing himself as one of the best midfielders in Spain in the process. He was part of the iconic Spanish national team that won the World Cup and two EUROs on the trot.

When Silva did end up leaving Valencia he made the move to Manchester City, when they were not the European juggernauts that they are today. In the long run, it certainly worked out. But at that point in time, many might have confused his decision to pick the Citizens over Real Madrid.

Manchester City legend rejected Real Madrid move

As reported by Sport Witness, when asked why he picked Manchester City over Real Madrid, Silva told AS:

“Firstly because they bet very hard on me. I felt their trust and support from the first call.”

“Then because in those conversations they already told me that the project was going to be what it finally was. The ambition was to become one of the greats of Europe and today it is.”

Silva went on to have a legendary career at Manchester City. He spent 10 years at the club, made more than 400 appearances and won numerous trophies with them.

Perhaps even more importantly, he was part of the team that went from an exciting project to one of the biggest in all of Europe. He did end up returning to Spain in the twilight of his career.

Silva joined Real Sociedad and it was clear that he was a top quality player even in his mid-30s. The Spaniard would spend three seasons at the club before retiring earlier this year.

Caf Awards: Nigeria stars Asisat Oshoala and Chiamaka Nnadozie on final shortlist as Uchenna Kanu is overlooked

Caf Awards: Nigeria stars Asisat Oshoala and Chiamaka Nnadozie on final shortlist as Uchenna Kanu is overlooked

The football ruling body has announced the final names of players up for recognition at the Caf women awards

The Confederation of African football has announced the final shortlists for the women’s categories of the 2023 CAF Awards, with Asisat Oshoala and Chiamaka Nnadozie making the cut.

In the Player of the Year zone, the Barcelona striker will battle with her France-based compatriot, Zambia’s Barbara Babanda, and South Africa’s trio of Andile Dlamini, Hilda Magaia as well as Thembi Kgatlana for the individual accolade.

Others are Cameroon and Inter Milan star Ajara Njoya and the Morocco trio of Anissa Lahmari, Fatima Tagnaout, and Ghizalaine Chebbak who plays professional fooball at AS FAR.

Unfortunately, industrious Uchenna Kanu – who is among the breakout stars in the year under review – will have to wait till another time to fancy her chances of getting decorated as Africa’s best player.

It was a double delight for goalkeeper Nnadozie who headlines the Goalkeeper of the Year group. Although she is outstanding favourites to win, she must negotiate her way past Morocco duo of Imane Abdelahad and Khadija Er-Rmichi and South Africa’s  Andile Dlamini plus Kaylin Swart.

Nigeria have two stars in the Young Player of the Year zone namely: Esther Ajakaye and Deborah Abiodun. Nonetheless, they face a stiff challenge in Ghana’s Comfort Yeboah, Morocco’s Nesryne El Chad and South Africa’s Thubelihle Shamase.

Super Falcons handler to the FIFA Women’s World Cup, Randy Waldrum wll challenge Mehdi El Qaichouri (SC Casablanca),  Reynald Pedros (Morocco), Desiree Ellis (South Africa) and Jerry Tshabalala (Mamelodi Sundowns) for the Coach of the Year accolade.

Elsewhere, Morocco, Nigeria,  Senegal,  South Africa and Zambia will slug it out for the National Team of the Year award.

According to CAF, the winners of each category will be determined after the votes of a panel composed of the CAF Technical Commission, media professionals from Member Associations, head coaches and captains of Member Associations including clubs involved in the group stages interclub competitions.

The awards ceremony will take place on Monday, December 11, 2023, at the Palais des Congres Movenpick, in Morocco.

Pochettino sacked, top four chance - Chelsea end of season outcome predicted

Chelsea news as the Blues come under pressure yet again after a dismal display against Newcastle with the tide turning against Mauricio Pochettino

After taking over a team that finished 12th last season, losing in the first round of both domestic club competitions and scoring just 38 goals in the league, Mauricio Pochettino had the freedom of Cobham and Stamford Bridge to throw the baby out with the bath water. Just over six months on from the announcement that he would be taking over as the third permanent boss under the new ownership group and it hasn't been a smooth start.

In the Premier League Chelsea have won just four of their opening 13 games despite playing six of the bottom half. Although goalscoring is on the up, that has been boosted by eight goals in two games before the international break and on the flipside it is now nine conceded in the past three with the Blues only keeping out Luton, Bournemouth and Fulham.

With the most recent game, a horrific 4-1 defeat at Newcastle full of self-inflicted mistakes and general team-wide underperformance, there has been a return to the backlash that was being piled on during inconsistent runs in mid-October and before. Despite the positive results against Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal it was a 'soft' Chelsea that were rolled over by the Magpies, Pochettino himself said, and it is the boss being criticised.

With a track record of improving players and building at clubs there was an expectation that things would change from last year but trends have stayed the same despite wholesale player and staff movement. In this light he has come under pressure once more with certain sections of the insatiable fanbase growing restless.

Ultimately he has only had 16 games in charge but many will point to Thomas Tuchel last year and say he had even less of an opportunity under the new owners before being axed. To make matters worse there is financial pressure on getting back into Europe, a task that already looks a long way off.

Here, football.london takes a look at what pundits are expecting from Chelsea this season.

Pochettino standing

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has cleared up the landscape around Pochettino's future. "Chelsea want to see improvement - they are not happy with the same disappointing results, the same mistakes and these kind of things," he told CaughtOffside.

"They want to see a better level, like they saw against Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City, but with a young team you have to be patient." In all it doesn't change too much for the manager but does indicate that even with credit in the bank he could soon come under more tangible pressure from the owners if things continue to slide. Now onto the pundits.

Top four

At the start of the season Michael Owen was backing Pochettino to lead Chelsea back into the Champions League spots. "I think they will [finish in the top four next season]," he said before a ball had been kicked. "The most important thing at that club is to get rid of players. You can never, ever have a squad of that much quality and have harmony."

He added: "You’re constantly draining all your energy trying to keep 30 players happy. I think the main thing now is to get rid of half a dozen players, focus on a smaller pool, and I think they will do alright next season.

"It's easier said than done, there's some that will naturally go - whether that be due to age, not being good enough or coming up to the end of their contract."

Gary Neville was also calling for time for Pochettino with improvement to come. "They'll have to give him time. Pochettino has to have time," he said. Only last month he also claimed that the club would be in the mix for the top four/five by the end of the season as well.

"Chelsea I think probably nearer to it (top 4/5) if they could just go on a run because they have got some really talented young players, their age is a lot better than Manchester United's squad." Meanwhile, Jamie Carragher is also behind Pochettino and backing him to come good.

"The best thing about Chelsea right now is Mauricio Pochettino, not the players or the owners," the former Liverpool star said after the club beat Tottenham. "When you talk about them getting back to winning trophies, I'm not sure they could have got a better manager that was available." he added: "I think there's a lot to feel good about at Chelsea: Pochettino right now, his young team, there’s a lot of optimism there because they have a manager who can go up against the best."

He continued: "We're almost a third of the way through the season, and you’re expecting Chelsea to get better under Pochettino. I don't think they get top four, but should they, will they still have a fight for it? Of course! You're not fighting against the best teams in the league if you don't have a say in that conversation and they'll be dropping points as well.

"We've seen this weekend that Newcastle have lost, Tottenham lost, and that'll happen over weekends. People will be dropping points around them but Pochettino as a manager, he's the thing that'd make me believe they have a chance to compete at the top."

Carragher finished: "What Pochettino has done in big games is fantastic. He's a manager who will go up against [Jurgen] Klopp, Guardiola, [Mikel] Arteta and he doesn't quite have the tools that they have - people will argue about the amount of money they've spent and whatever but be honest, look at what they have on paper. It's still short on what a few of the top teams have but what they've managed to do has been fantastic."

Manager for the second half of last season, Frank Lampard, agrees. "I think he will get it [time], and he deserves it," he told Sky Sports.

"He's a man that comes with a big pedigree as a coach, and when I saw the issues that I referenced and he will have his own version of that, we all want to perform the best that we can. The hard bit is now he would have wanted points on the board in this period of games to give that feel in what will be a tougher period of games."

Pressure and sackings

Roy Keane is much less sure of how things will turn around though. "What did we say about Chelsea's project, if he keeps losing football matches he will be under pressure," the Sky pundit said last month.

Earlier in the year when a rocky start and injuries had left the Blues stranded with little hope ESPN's Mark Ogden also didn't see a way out. "He's got a group of players that he needs time to work out his best team and his best squad and I think he's still working on that process but the situation is, when you manage a club like Chelsea with the history they've got, certainly recent history, you don't get time.

"You don't get time to make those decisions and you have to hit the ground running and he's not really done that and had a fairly soft landing in terms of fixtures." He added: "I'd be a little bit concerned if I was Pochettino because Chelsea has become a very difficult club to manage.

"It was difficult under [Roman] Abramovich but Abramovich you felt the managers had the tools they needed to succeed, if they failed then they had been given every chance to succeed. I think at Chelsea now the manager has got almost too many tools and maybe not the right tools."

Former Tottenham striker Darren Bent also wasn't confident that things would end well. He told talkSPORT: "Chelsea I almost feel are stuck in this kind of phase where, are they going to be a team that rebuilds or do they need instant success now?

"Now, [Graham] Potter was supposed to be the one that rebuilt Chelsea but yet it was getting that bad they went, 'No, pull the plug'. I almost feel like with Pochettino, if this doesn’t get better, they can say all they want about, 'Yeah we'll give him time, he's got to rebuild the squad'.

"If Chelsea, come Christmas time, are bottom half of the table and I'm talking like halfway between bottom and top 10, they might have to make a change." After losing to Unai Emery's Aston Villa in September Gabby Agbonlahor joined in the conversation, saying: "I was confident [Aston Villa would beat Chelsea] because you look at their players, you're not scared.

"They've got problems and everyone talks about time, time, time. They're booing Chelsea after the game, fans don't give you time. These fans are like 'you've spent £1billion we should be up there with Manchester City, up there with Arsenal. We're going to be fighting for top four.'"

He continued: "It's erratic from the owners, the spending. The manager has got to do better. Before the last game he looked quite happy after losing points like he thinks he's got time and a this length of a project. We saw it with Frank Lampard and Potter. If this carries on, and they've got some tough games that they're not guaranteed to win now, teams aren't scared to play Chelsea now."

Agbonlahor finished: "Pochettino, I hope he doesn't think he's got the amount of time he thinks he has."

This is a sentiment echoed by former player and assistant manager Boudewijn Zenden: "It's not easy for Pochettino," he told Dutch outlet Soccerness. "I have been at Chelsea as a player and [assistant] manager and know the environment in which he works.

"There have been several great coaches who have died there. I don't expect it to happen anytime soon in his case. The club has gone through an unprecedented transition with new owners and a completely new squad. It is logical that it takes time.

"On the other hand, they have spent an awful lot of money in the last four transfer windows. If you take that thought with you to the match, you watch with pain in your eyes. You don’t see the dominant Chelsea you expect. This is of course also due to the many injuries. That is something that worries me with the difficult schedule they still have.

"If Chelsea don’t get enough points until Boxing Day, things will become very precarious for everyone at the club." When asked if he would be manager come Christmas he said: "I really don’t dare say that.

"I think he is a good coach, but putting together a completely new team takes time. The fact that he cannot play with a fixed eleven means that it takes longer to forge certain automatisms.

"I honestly doubt he will get that time. But let’s not be too pessimistic and assume that things are moving in the right direction little by little, as the latest results show."

Finally, Simon Jordan is unsure on whether Pochettino is the man to bring success but hasn't ruled out the 51-year-old having a good run at things either way. "I don't see him as having that winning gene," he told talkSPORT. "I don't think he will be the person who takes Chelsea to the place that they want to be.

"I think he will be a bit more than the part Eddie Howe will play at Newcastle. But I think he will play a part in making sure Todd Boehly starts to understand what really running a football club involves and what really employing managers who win Leagues involves.

"But Pochettino is one of the best of the rest and there is a very unique gang, a very small gang. We like to use the term world-class for players and spread it around like confetti. There are only a few of those around, but everyone who has a good few games is world-class.

"There are only a few elite managers, Carlo Ancelotti is one of them, Pep Guardiola clearly one of them and Jurgen Klopp.

Edo2024: Shaibu declares for governorship, says ‘Nobody can stop my ambition’

Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu has formally declared his ambition for the 2024 governorship in the state despite facing strong opposition from Governor Godwin Obaseki, who appears to prefer another person as his successor.

Mr Shaibu, who made the declaration in a pre-recorded speech aired on Monday said, he will be contesting under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Channels television reported.

In his speech at Bishop Kelly Centre in Benin City, the venue of the event, Mr Shaibu, who has been at loggerheads with Governor Obaseki over his governorship ambition declared, “Nobody can stop my ambition,” Punch newspaper reported.

“I just want to appreciate all of you. We have started the journey and I decided together with all of us that after the consultation, we needed to make the answer to our consultation known to Edo people and the answer is clear.

“They (Edo people) have asked me to go and run and they said I am the one they see not just as a street boy but the original own boy that can live there.

“I can assure you that by the grace of God, we will deliver practical governance,” Mr Shaibu

Edo State is one of the states in Nigeria where off-cycle election is conducted.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed September 2024 for the governorship election.

Governor Obaseki, who appears to prefer another person as his successor, once described his deputy as being “overambitious.”

Eterno Hotel, Benin City, which was the initial venue for Mr Shaibu’s governorship declaration on Monday (today) was changed hours to the event after the hotel management informed Mr Shaibu that a political group loyal to Mr Obaseki has paid for and is using the venue the same time that Mr Shaibu’s declaration was scheduled for.

A staff of the hotel, who identified himself as “Ezekiel” confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES on the telephone on Monday that the event was billed to be held at the hotel but he only learned of the sudden change this morning. Mr Ezekiel had no idea why the venue was changed.

The relationship between Governor Obaseki and his deputy has so deteriorated that Mr Shaibu had to seek court protection against perceived impeachment plots by lawmakers in the state.

He, however, withdrew the suit after prominent elders in the state mediated between him and Governor Obaseki.

The relationship between the two former political allies further worsened after Mr Obaseki relocated the Deputy Governor’s Office from Government House to another part of Benin City.

Mr Shaibu, despite the feud with Mr Obaseki and his previous apology to the governor, appears unperturbed as he declares to run for the governorship. He said with his years of political experience and having served for two terms as a state lawmaker and later as a federal lawmaker before becoming a deputy governor, he is better experienced to succeed Mr Obaseki in 2024.

“For me, competence and experience should be the watchword. Who is competent, more experienced and who will hit the ground running from day one if he becomes governor?

“Are we going to experiment with a new person again and the person will spend the first four years learning on the job and the next four years trying to embezzle and set up businesses in the name of consolidating on his first term?” Mr Shaibu said on Saturday in Abuja.

Edo 2024: Obaseki’s Deputy, Philip Shaibu Officially Declares To Run For Governor

Shaibu’s governorship ambition has pitted him against his principal, Governor Godwin Obaseki, who is believed to be working to pick someone else to succeed him.

The Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, has formally declared to run for the office of the state governor in the 2024 governorship election.

In a televised announcement on Monday morning, Shaibu said he will contest the ticket of his party, the Peoples Democratic Party in the upcoming party primaries.

It had been earlier reported that the Eterno Hotels in Benin City allegedly cancelled Shaibu’s booking to use the hotel for his formal declaration to run for the office of the governor today.

The hotel, owned by a prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, is located in the Government Reserved Area.

The management of the hotel was said to have contacted the deputy governor and told him that the space was no longer available for his use while his money was refunded.

The hotel management was said to have told the Shaibu group that another group, ‘Obaseki finishing well group,’ had paid for the same venue.

One of Shaibu’s loyalists, who asked not to be named, was quoted to have said, “We found this very preposterous that we were contacted by the hotel management that a group had paid for the same venue for a programme slated for 7 a.m. same date.

“We know where this is coming from. Whatever their plans to frustrate our declaration will definitely fail. They are jittery over Shaibu’s declaration and popularity.”

Shaibu’s governorship ambition has pitted him against his principal, Governor Godwin Obaseki, who is believed to be working to pick someone else to succeed him.

At the height of the crisis, Shaibu dragged Obaseki and the state House of Assembly to court, seeking an order to stop them from impeaching him.

Obaseki, on his part, had openly accused Shaibu of being overambitious.

Though Shaibu later apologised to Obaseki and the latter said he had forgiven him, the Edo State Government relocated Shaibu’s office out of the government house.

Peter Crouch says Arsenal winger ‘didn’t really have a kick’ vs Brentford

Peter Crouch has expressed his disappointment with two Arsenal players for their performances against Brentford.

Arsenal won 1-0 against Brentford away from home in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

So, what did Peter Crouch say about Arsenal duo Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Martinelli? Let’s take a look.

What’s the story?

Well, Arsenal won 1-0 against Brentford in the London derby on Saturday evening. Germany international Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the match in the 89th minute and impressed Granit Xhaka among others.

Although Arsenal got the job done in the end and picked up all three points from the London derby, I have to say that Mikel Arteta’s side were not very convincing, especially in the first half in front of goal.

Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Peter Crouch was following the match for TNT Sports. He noticed that Arsenal attacking midfielder Martin Odegaard and winger Gabriel Martinelli were not very good against the Bees.

Crouch said on TNT Sports (7:56 pm, November 25, 2023): “They (Brentford) kept the big players pretty quiet. I thought Odegaad was quiet. I thought Martinelli didn’t really have a kick.”

In my view, Arsenal winger Gabriel Martinelli had a disappointing match against Brentford. The Brazil international started on the left of a front-three and played for 79 minutes before Kai Havertz replaced him.

Although Martinelli had his moments, the 22-year-old could not really put the Brentford defence under pressure. The Bees kept him quiet and made him quite ineffective.

Like Martinelli, Martin Odegaard also had a quiet game. The Norway international playmaker could not penetrate the Brentford defence and hardly did anything of note in the first half.

Although the former Real Madrid attacking midfielder improved after the break, I believe that it was one of his worst games for Arsenal in recent times.

Tinubu inherited govt almost in a coma, says Ogun governor

The Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, on Sunday, said the country was almost comatose when President Bola Tinubu came into power.

Abiodun disclosed this during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.

He said, “The President Tinubu-led administration has been very bold and audacious.

“They have taken the bull by the horns. They’ve done what no government had done in the history of Nigeria.

“Tinubu inherited an administration that was almost comatose. I believe this government is very bold and taking the bull by the horns.

“President Tinubu has been able to do what no president has ever been able to do in the history of Nigeria.

“President Tinubu deregulated the petroleum industry to save Nigerians.”

The governor, however, urged Nigerians to be patient with the President, saying he is confident in the Tinubu-led administration to tackle the challenges facing the country.

He added, “You know our President, besides being a former governor and a senator, he is also an accountant.

“So, he is someone who is very spot on and all hands are on deck to turn this economy around. We are very hopeful and we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.”

This is coming a few days after the Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, said the administration of Tinubu took over a “dead economy.”

Soludo stated that the Tinubu regime inherited an economy already beyond revival before it assumed office.

“I said it before. This particular government inherited a dead economy from a microeconomic point of view. This government inherited a dead horse that was seen standing but people didn’t know that it was dead. I think it’s important for Nigerians to understand this,” he said on the same programme.

Earlier this month, Tinubu while negotiating an infrastructure loan in Saudi Arabia had also stated his administration took over substantial fiscal and infrastructure deficits.

TEAM NEWS FOR EVERTON V UNITED

Andre Onana trained on Friday and should be available to face Everton on Sunday, according to Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag.

The Cameroon international goalkeeper was injured last week during the Indomitable Lions' 3-0 victory over Mauritius. He left the national squad and missed the subsequent 1-1 draw with Libya in the Africa World Cup qualifying section.

Onana is United's only ever-present this term, having started and completed all 18 matches so far, although the Reds do have Tom Heaton and summer signing Altay Bayindir in reserve.

Ten Hag confirmed that, after the latest session at Carrington, our no.24 is over the problem and ready to face the Toffees.

“Andre is okay. He stepped in during training today, so he is good,” Erik told reporters at his pre-match press conference.

There is further good news, as defender Luke Shaw is also fit enough to be part of the squad on Merseyside.

Shaw featured in our first two encounters this season, against Wolves and Tottenham, but the left-back has been missing for three months due to a muscle problem.

He has been working hard at our training base for the last fortnight and Ten Hag confirmed that he is available to play against Sean Dyche's side.

Rasmus Hojlund took part in the session but it is not yet clear whether he'll be fit, after he pulled out of Denmark's two international fixtures with a muscle strain.

“Rasmus is a close finish, he is training, he is down and outside,” Ten Hag added.

“He is making very good steps and we will have to wait until tomorrow to make a final decision.”

PREVIEW: EVERTON V UNITED Article

Jonny Evans is still sidelined after being injured in our recent defeat to FC Copenhagen, although his return is not far away, while Mason Mount will be assessed prior to the meeting.

"Mason picked up an issue so we have to assess if he’s available for the game or not,” Ten Hag told club media on Friday.

Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Tyrell Malacia and Lisandro Martinez are all out of United's visit to L4.

The Toffees will be extra motivated following last week's news that they have been deducted 10 points by the Premier League for breaching profit and sustainability rules.

Club captain Seamus Coleman is on the road to recovery after completing 90 minutes for Everton's Under-21s in midweek, his first full match since suffering a knee injury in May 2023. Ben Godfrey and former Red Michael Keane also received valuable game time in that clash, with Athletic Club of Spain.

Sunday's fixture comes too early for Dele Alli, who is yet to feature for the Merseysiders this season due to a groin issue.

Midfielder Andre Gomes is back on the grass after overcoming a calf problem, but Sean Dyche has ruled out Amadou Onana, who picked up a calf injury with Belgium.

“Dele needs time, he’s just feeling his way back in so it’d be really pleasing if he can get himself back fit,” Dyche said on Friday.

“Andre is back on the grass with us, he’s had a very frustrating season. He needs time, he needs games but he’s back around it.

“Ama’s calf I don’t think will be right. It’s still sore.”

Arteta sets a new managerial record at Arsenal after Brentford win

Mikel Arteta, regarded as one of the best managers in England, has achieved a new milestone in the Premier League with Arsenal.

The Spanish manager has consistently performed well since taking over the helm at Arsenal and has now set a new record. The recent victory against Brentford marked his 116th win as the Gunners manager in 200 games.

This accomplishment makes him the Arsenal manager with the most wins after 200 games, surpassing the records of Arsene Wenger (111) and George Graham (106), as revealed by Coaches Voice on Twitter.

Despite facing initial scepticism from critics when appointed for his first senior managerial role, Arteta has proven himself. Arsenal’s hierarchy, who never doubted his suitability for the position, deserves credit for sticking with him.

What a remarkable achievement and testament to Arteta’s managerial prowess.

Just Arsenal Opinion

Arteta has had a good time on our bench and we now expect him to win some trophies in the next few seasons.

The Spaniard knows this and we can tell that he is pushing to end this campaign as the champions of England.

For now, the boys must maintain the standard they have created in some important wins this term.

If we can secure wins even when we are not in our best form, we can be sure that we will win enough games to bring success to the Emirates, possibly even in Europe.

President Tinubu Meets Ondo Deputy Governor, Lawmakers, Others, Asks Them To Embrace Peace

The development came after about six hours of deliberations between Tinubu, Ondo State Government officials, the All Progressives Congress (APC), members and other stakeholders.

Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu, has mediated in the political crisis lingering between Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, and his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

The development came after about six hours of deliberations between Tinubu, Ondo State Government officials, the All Progressives Congress (APC), members and other stakeholders.

The parties converged on Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja, on President Tinubu’s invitation Friday.

Meanwhile, 11 out of 26 members of the state’s House of Assembly were said to be planning to declare Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu “incapacitated” and proclaim the embattled Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa as acting Governor, following the inability of the governor to resume office, due to ill-health.

However, after about six hours of deliberations between President Bola Tinubu, Ondo state officials, the All Progressives Congress, APC, members and other stakeholders, the political logjam in Ondo seemed to have been resolved.

The Deputy Governor, Aiyedatiwa, pledged to carry all commissioners and officials along in handling the state’s affairs, while he pledged to maintain the status quo and unite all the warring factions.

According to PUNCH, he said, “I want to say that I pledge to all of you that I embrace every one of you. I put behind all that has happened before now. I’ve let go and also let God, just as the President has advised us.

“And I want to say that no offence, no guile in my mind whatsoever. All that has happened is politics. Impeachment is part of politics. If you survive it, it is also politics. It has come. I’ve survived it and every other thing in his past.

“It is one big family and our father has intervened to bring all the children together to remain under the same family. With the position that I occupy, I will carry every one of you along in every decision that needs to be taken.

“And everything that we do we will work together. The executive and the legislature will work together to ensure that governance is on the right track.”

He pleaded with all members of the State Executive Council to cooperate with the governor and himself to “bring the dividend of democracy” to the people of Ondo State.

The Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Oladiji Olamide, on his part also resolved to halt all impeachment moves against Aiyedatiwa.

He said: “Our resolution is that one, we shall embrace peace. Secondly, there would be no more dissolution of the cabinet and the Deputy Governor would maintain status quo as far as the House of Assembly leadership is concerned.”

“We will maintain status quo as far as the party leadership in the state is concerned and maintain status quo as far as the leadership of the State House of Assembly is concerned. Thank you, Mr. President,” he added.

Meanwhile, President Tinubu had ordered the police to withdraw from the premises of the Ondo State House of Assembly in Akure.

BREAKING: Nigerian Law School Places Five-Year Ban On Faculty Of Law At Datti Ahmed’s Baze University, Abuja For Violating Quota Of Admission

The imposition of the moratorium was sequel to the findings of the Council of Legal Education which showed that the university’s Law Faculty was currently having a backlog of over 347 law students waiting to be admitted into the Nigerian Law School.

The Nigerian Law School has banned Baze University in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, from admitting students into its Law Faculty for consistently violating its admission quota of 50 students per session as approved by the Council of Legal Education (CLE).

Baze University was founded by Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the running mate to the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi.

The imposition of the moratorium was sequel to the findings of the Council of Legal Education which showed that the university’s Law Faculty was currently having a backlog of over 347 law students waiting to be admitted into the Nigerian Law School.

The Acting Secretary and Director of Administration of the Nigerian Law School, Ms Aderonke Osho, made this known in a statement made available to journalists on Friday.

Osho stated that “At its Quarterly Meeting held on November 23, 2023, the Council of Legal Education (CLE) presided over by its Chairman, Chief Emeka Ngige, SAN, OFR considered the report of the Accreditation panel to the Faculty of Law, Baze University, Abuja.

“It emerged from the findings by the Panel led by the Director-General, Nigerian Law School, Prof Isa Hayatu Chiroma, SAN, that: Baze University consistently and most flagrantly had contravened its admission quota of 50 students per session as approved by the Council of Legal Education with the result that the Faculty is currently having a backlog of over 347 law students waiting to be admitted into the Nigerian Law School.

“Since 2017 the Council of Legal Education had  grappled with the excesses of Baze University by admitting over 750 law students which ordinarily would have taken about 15 years of admission based on the quota allotted to the University.

“Baze University runs a three (3)-year LL.B programme for some UTME candidates without the approval of National Universities Commission (NUC),  Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB and Council of Legal Education.”

The statement further noted that “Under the NUC Minimum Benchmark Academic Standard (BMAS) for law degree programme in Nigerian Universities, Law is a five (5)-year programme for UTME candidates and four (4)-year for Direct Entry students.

“The Council of Legal Education after thorough consideration of these infractions resolved as follows: The imposition of a moratorium on admission of law students to the Faculty of Law, Baze University, Abuja,  with immediate effect;

“The moratorium will last in the first instance for a period of 5 years and may be renewed if no satisfactory action is taken to remedy the situation.

“The Council in the interest of the innocent students, parents and guardians   will use the 5 year period to find ways to deal with the backlog of law students admitted by Baze University in excess of its admission quota.

“Follow-up visits will be paid to the University to ascertain the extent of the measures it has taken to remedy the anomalies observed during the accreditation visit.

“The National Universities Commission (NUC), Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Parents, guardians, prospective applicants and members of the public are hereby put on notice on the status of Baze University Abuja and its faculty of Law.”

Gary Lineker makes prediction on where Arsenal will finish in the Premier League

Arsenal have been told that they’re still ‘right in’ the Premier League title race by England legend Gary Lineker.

The Premier League season is nearing its busiest period and Arsenal are once again right in amongst those racing to lift the Premier League trophy this season.

The Gunners are just one point behind the league leaders Manchester City and will hope the Citizens drop points against Liverpool on Saturday.

This season however sees the top five all separated by just three points which could leave neutrals in store for one of the most hotly contested title races in recent memory.

A title race, which the Emirates side will be hoping sees a more successful end than last season. Now they’ve been predicted to do just that by Gary Lineker.

Lineker has joined Gary Neville in naming Arsenal as title favourites for the 2023/24 season.

Lineker tips Arsenal for success

Arsenal have a rich history filled with Silverware, something Mikel Arteta will be keen to add to. Speaking on The Rest is Football podcast, Lineker has tipped the Gunners to see out the intense competition to win their first league title in 20 years.

“I will say they’re still up there, they’re still right in it, I’m going to stick with it, not with a great deal of confidence but I never had that in the first place.

“I do think they’ve got the makings of something, I think they’re fairly close to it so I’m going to stay with my initial prediction of the fact that they will win the league.”

Lineker didn’t sound completely assured in his prediction, which resonates with the feeling many have, given how City tend to flip a switch and become a super team after Christmas.

When did Arsenal last win the Premier League?

Arsenal haven’t won a Premier League trophy since the 2003/04 season under Arsene Wenger. This title was their 13th and came with the legendary and history making label of ‘The Invincibles’ for remaining undefeated all season.

Three of their 13 league titles have come in the Premier League era but we know that Arteta and the squad are desperate to add to this tally.

The Spanish boss has already tasted silverware at the Emirates following an FA Cup triumph in his first season at the club which was the club’s 14th.

"I get crazy": Elton John now suggests he was unhappy about how Manchester City treated 21-year-old

Elton John has now sent a message to Manchester City and Pep Guardiola about Cole Palmer.

The 76-year-old spoke to Gary Lineker for BBC Sport.

So, what did Elton John say about Cole Palmer? Let’s take a look…

What’s the story?

Well, the singer was critical of Manchester City for not playing the England international.

John did not actually name Guardiola or Manchester City, although given the fact Chelsea are currently giving Palmer plenty of game time, it would seem his frustrations can only be aimed one way.

The honorary life president of Watford said: “I get crazy when players get left out of clubs. I’m so glad Cole Palmer is in the England squad. This boy, he’s only going to learn by playing with the better players.

That is exactly why Palmer wanted to leave Manchester City – by the sounds of it.

Guardiola told the Wythenshawe-born maestro that he would get chances following the departure of Riyad Mahrez to Saudi Arabia.

However, Palmer was keen to step out from the shadows and become a key cog elsewhere, something he has quickly found under Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea.

The 21-year-old has already become a talismanic figure for the west Londoners, stepping up to take some high pressure penalties, including a late equaliser in the 4-4 draw against Manchester City.

Manchester City cannot be blamed for Cole Palmer exit

Many sections of the media have been critical of Manchester City for letting Palmer leave – including Sam Allardyce and Anton Ferdinand.

However, Guardiola is blessed with many brilliant attacking options, so it was always going to be tough to guarantee playing time.

At Chelsea, Pochettino had more of a blank slate, and effectively built a new frontline this summer in the arrivals of Nicolas Jackson, Christopher Nkunku and Palmer, which ensured the Argentine was able to promise the City Football Academy graduate a leading role.

As such, Manchester City cannot really be blamed for letting him go.

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry sets historically-bad record after 'horrible' night

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry had an incredibly successful playing career, but this is yet to translate to management, and he suffered last night with the France under-21 side.

The former striker took the job with the French youth side in August, but saw his team falter during this international break, and set a new disastrous historical record.

His side lost 2-0 in their recent EURO qualifier against Austria, before then losing 3-0 to South Korea in a friendly.

Theirry Henry sets new France record

The back-to-back defeats, with France failing to score a single goal, was the first time France had suffered consecutive goalless defeats this century.

To put that into context, Henry was yet to win a Premier League title as a player the last time the France under-21 had encountered such a bad run of form.

Henry was not happy after the game, fuming at his players for the lacklustre performances they put in.

“The result is horrible,” Henry stated.

“I told the guys that we were taught a lesson in fighting spirit against Austria, and here we have received a lesson in realism. We can’t allow us to defend like that.”

Thierry Henry’s career in management

Arsenal v Manchester United - Premier League

Henry has not had much luck in management so far. After years as Roberto Martinez’s assistant with the Belgium National Team, before taking the head coach role at his former side Monaco.

This was an ill-fated decision, and was sacked after just four wins in 20 games, during which time he signed former Arsenal teammate Cesc Fabregas in the January transfer window.

He since had another unsuccessful spell as head coach, this time with MLS side Montreal Impact, before returning to his previous job as Belgium assistant.

Martinez, and subsequently Henry, were dismissed from their roles with Belgium after a disastrous World Cup campaign last year, and the former striker found himself at a crossroads.

He since took the France under-21 role, in the hope that the experience would prepare him better for a senior role, but so far it has not been plain sailing.

It is early days for Henry in his current role, but success as a player does not always equate to success in coaching, and questions may be raised about whether he is simply not destined to be a manager should this spell also end badly for him.

Arsenal have a number of ex-players in significant roles at the club, in Mikel Arteta, Edu Gaspar, Per Mertesacker and Jack Wilshere, but it remains to be seen whether Henry will ever be considered for a similar role.

The overall winner received in educational grant a total of N5 million to study the course of her choice in any tertiary institution in Africa. She was also presented with a laptop, a plaque and a trophy.

The first runner-up in the competition, Khadijah Abdulhameed of Sweet Haven High School, Kano, Kano State, received in educational grant a total of N3 million to study in tertiary institution on the continent, while Naomi Chukwuma-Okoh of Queens College, Yaba, Lagos, who came third, received N2.5 million in educational grant.

The two runners-up also received laptops, award plaques and branded bags filled with educational materials such as books, writing tools, among others.

12,000 entries

The representative of the panel of judges, Asabe Kabir, a professor of African Literature at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS), said since its launch 13 years ago, the 2023 edition received the highest number of entries of almost 12,000.

The renowned scholar also commended the spread of the entries, saying candidates from various parts of the country sent in their entries, and that the judges were impressed that a large percentage of participants complied with the set instructions.

She said the candidates wrote on the topic: “Will Artificial Intelligence(AI) Take Over Human Intelligence? What Should Students Do to Ensure AI Doesn’t Override But Enhance Their Ability to Learn through Research?”

However, the shortlisted 12 finalists, comprising three males and seven females, assembled in Lagos on Sunday, 19 November, to write on a new topic: “Ethnic Diversity and National Unity: Implications for Our Political Problems and Possible Solutions”.

Assessment

According to the professor, the scripts were “thoroughly evaluated resulting in coming up with the shortlist of 12 best essays,” adding that the judges were guided by the “approved guidelines for the distribution of marks for composition in line with the benchmark set by NECO and WAEC.”

She said “content” carried 40 marks, while “expression” carried 30 marks, noting that “organisation” and “mechanical accuracy” carried 15 marks each, making up a total of 100 marks.

She said: “Under the content, the focus is usually on the subject matter, with special emphasis placed on the relevance of the idea of the topic, appropriateness of the language and its relevance to the central theme and its development. Above all, originality in the candidate’s approach and ability to addressing the topic carries weight. Any alteration from the topic is unacceptable.

“Expression which carries 30 marks focuses on the candidate’s ability to express himself or herself which includes choice of vocabularies and their relevance to the topic, sentence structure, judicious and imaginative use of figurative language, candidate’s control over the vocabularies, and descriptive words to create vivid pictures.

“Under organisation, the candidate’s organisation of points which include the correct use of former features such as good paragraphing, suitable opening, adequate development of paragraphs, proper links between paragraphs, balance, unity, coherence, suitable conclusion as well as appropriate use of emphasis, and arrangement of ideas are the basis for scoring.”

She said the mechanical accuracy guideline concerned “mainly the candidate’s ability to use the mechanics of English Language, especially as they relate with the correct use of grammar, punctuation and spelling.”

Observation

Speaking on the observations by the judges, Mrs Kabir said many of the candidates were found guilty of plagiarism.

She said such students used “untidy sources” to generate their answers, including websites and applications such as “Ask AI,” “Tutor.com,” “Readout Loud,” “Study Gig,” “Study Bay,” “Assignment Maker,” among many others.

UBA Essay Winner 3. Atta, Naomi, Khadeejah, Adaeze, and Alawuba

UBA Essay Winner 3. Atta, Naomi, Khadeejah, Adaeze, and Alawuba

“We detected all these plagiarisms when we noticed similar sentence patterns in the writing structures, recycling of information without changing the language gotten from the internet, copy and paste process of research. In fact, about 70 per cent of the evaluated essays were outright plagiarisms which we detected through checkers like ‘Turn it in’ ‘Copy Leaks’, and many others,” the professor said.

She, however commended many of the candidates for their beautiful entries, saying she was surprised to know that there were students of Senior School 1 classes among the 12 finalists.

Ecstatic mother

The mother of the the overall winner of the competition, Veronica Onaro, a fashion entrepreneur, who was visibly overjoyed, said she had known all along that her daughter would lift the trophy.

She said: “Adaeze has always been very exceptional in whatever she does. When she got to SS1 she started developing special interest in essay writing. Anytime there is an opportunity, you would see her preparing to participate and I have always encouraged her. Even if I didn’t want to, whenever she needed my phone, I would always want to know what she wanted to use it for.”

She noted that even if she claimed she didn’t have time to check her write-ups, her daughter would still read it to her, “and I would definitely show interest and correct appropriately.”

Mrs Onaro said her daughter is willing to study Economics for her degree, saying her interest is to contribute to economic development of Nigeria through promotion of sound policies.

Alawuba, Atta speak

The Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of UBA, Oliver Alawuba, applauded the finalists for their excellence, saying the bank is committed to grooming future leaders for Africa through the competition and other initiatives.

Mr Alawuba said the financial institution’s commitment to reclaiming Africa’s lost glory is undoubted, adding that through quality education the continent will rise.

He said: “The focus of the national essay competition is the African youth. The objective is to improve the critical thinking ability and reading skills of African youth and position them for leadership on the continent.”

For her part, the Chief Executive Officer of UBA Foundation, the bank’s corporate social responsibility arm in charge of the competition, Bola Atta, said the initiative has been recording improvement every year since its launch 13 years ago.

“The quality of entries that we received this year was amazing. And the quality of the winners is even more amazing. They are just excellent, fast-paced with ability and talent,” Mrs Atta said.

Kevin Campbell says £27m Arsenal player is going to be dropped soon

Arsenal have been forced to field a slightly weakened team in recent weeks.

The Gunners have been struggling through a minor injury crisis at the Emirates as the likes of Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Jesus and Thomas Partey have struggled for fitness, but, luckily, most of the north London club’s key players should be back soon.

One man who is very much on the road to recovery is Gabriel Jesus. The striker has been on Brazil duty over the past week and all signs indicate he’s back at something close to full fitness.

The 26-year-old’s return to form leaves Mikel Arteta with something of a selection headache as Leandro Trossard has been playing very well as of late. However, according to Kevin Campbell, speaking on the Highbury Squad YouTube channel, Jesus will come straight back in and Trossard will be dropped once the main man is back ready to start up front.

Trossard will be dropped for Jesus

Campbell gave his verdict on this situation.

“Jesus comes back in, sorry Trossard. I think Trossard is a top player, but he’s not Jesus. Jesus gives us another dimension. I was hoping when Jesus went down that Trossard would have grabbed a few games a bit more, but he shared the load with Eddie a bit more. Jesus is the top man, he is the top man,” Campbell said.

Not done enough

Trossard has been very good for Arsenal lately, but you have to do something truly special if you are to displace a player like Jesus.

The £27m man has done himself no disservice as Arsenal’s starting striker, but Jesus is one of the best in the world at what he does, and Arsenal are a different team without him.

Trossard will get more chances. After all, he’s incredibly talented and incredibly versatile, but a spell on the bench may be on the horizon for the Belgian once Jesus is back.

Tinubu’s govt attracting huge investments to Nigeria – Foreign Affairs Minister

Tinubu’s govt attracting huge investments to Nigeria – Foreign Affairs Minister

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar said President Bola Tinubu’s government is attracting huge investments to Nigeria.

Tuggar stated this in an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today on Tuesday.

The minister’s comment comes on the heels of the G20 Compact with Africa (CWA) Conference President Tinubu is attending in Berlin, Germany.

He said, “Today there was a signing of a $500m agreement between Union Bank and a Germany group GWX for the financing of a green energy project.

“There was another agreement between a Nigerian group and a German group. You know Germany is in need of energy due to the shortage of energy supply since the Ukraine-Russian war began.

“These are very few of the things that have been happening. You have also looked at what is going on in other places with the Nigerian private sector because of the confidence that has been reinstilled in the private sector activities by the Tinubu administration.

“Within the last two weeks Aliko Dangote signed a $500m contract with an investment firm. BUA signed another $500m contract with IFC. Then you have the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority signed a $500m agreement with IFC.

“Within the last two weeks you can easily say $2 billion. Nigeria is witnessing huge investments under the Tinubu administration,” he said.

Bank Pensioners In Abuja Seek Pension Review, Ask Nigerian Government, Human Rights Bodies To Prevail On Management

The UBA Pensioners, which belong to the Federal Parastatals and Private Sector Pensioners Association of Nigeria (FEPPPAN), said that the bank management should carry out the review as many pensioners had been sent to their early graves as a result of the meager pensions.

The national leadership of the United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc Pensioners’ Welfare Association, known as UBA Pensioners, has asked the Nigerian government to prevail on the bank management to carry out an “immediate review of our monthly Pension in line with all Pension increases approved by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) since 1995.”

The UBA Pensioners, which belong to the Federal Parastatals and Private Sector Pensioners Association of Nigeria (FEPPPAN), said that the bank management should carry out the review as many pensioners had been sent to their early graves as a result of the meager pensions.

The pensioners therefore, called on the Nigerian government, the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), the National Human Rights Commission, International Human Rights Organisations, and Civil Society Organisations to come to their aid.

In a statement signed by their National Chairman and General Secretary, Fidelis O. Fapohunda and Franklin O. Erinle, respectively, and delivered at a press conference in Abuja, the pensioners alleged that despite countless promises and plea for patience, the bank has delayed the implementation of the constitutionally backed pension increments and other entitlements of pensioners.

The statement demands “Immediate review of our monthly Pension in line with all Pension increases approved in Nigeria by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) since 1995. Implementation of other entitlements due to our members” Responding to questions from journalists, Erinle explained; “The matter was reported to the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), Abuja. The Commission reaffirmed that Section 173 (3) of the Constitution of this great country needed to be obeyed by UBA Plc.

“The pensioners, ranging from retired Executive Directors to Messengers numbering more than 3,000, have been so dehumanised with the least paid getting N1,763.27 per month as pension after many years of faithful services to the bank.

“It’s conspicuously clear that the management is insensitive to the plight of its retired workers and their deplorable conditions, but we have resolved that we shall no longer continue to suffer in silence.”

Some of the pensioners who spoke to journalists at the sideline of press conference expressed sadness and displeasure, saying the bank dehumanises them horribly.

Alhaji Adetimehin, a 74-year old pensioner said; “For clarity, we quote Section 173 (3) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria thus; “Pensions shall be reviewed every five years or together with any Federal Civil Service salary reviews, whichever is earlier”. But from 1995 to 2005, pensions in UBA Plc were never reviewed.”

Mr Sopitan, 82-year old pensioner of UBA Plc also said; “Just as previously done by the old management of the UBA Plc from 1995 to 2005, even from the post-merger year in 2005 to date, there has been no review of pensions in UBA Plc as provided for in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The management of the bank had always argued that pensions in UBA Plc are not subject to reviews. The pensioners continued to display maturity and patience in persuading the Bank to do the right thing but to no avail. We are calling on everyone to come help us.”

When contacted, the UBA spokesperson, Ramon Nasir, stated that he would get back with the official reaction later on Tuesday.

“Good afternoon. Kindly avail some time to get the response of our Bank’s responsible officer on the subject. I will respond before close of business tomorrow. Thank you.”

Tinubu seeks German investment in vital sectors

By Matthew Atungwu

President Bola Tinubu has asked for German investment in vital Nigerian economic areas, including electricity and rail transport.

According to a statement released by the president’s spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu made the request at a meeting with German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz on Monday in Berlin, outside the G20 Compact with Africa Economic Conference.

According to the President, important growth-enabling businesses in transportation, energy, and the generation, transmission, and distribution of electric power require German investment.

The President said that there should be a renewed urgency to the uneven and sporadic implementation of the Presidential Power Initiative, which is backed by Siemens.

“For me, I am very much committed to pursuing all aspects of the Siemens power project and the skill development opportunities that will emerge from that project for our talented youths who can participate in sustaining the industry,” Tinubu said.

He added that Siemens can contribute to Nigeria’s rail network by supplying cutting-edge trains and railroads, just as it is doing in Egypt, where it is building a 2,000 km ultra-high-speed rail network spanning 60 towns.

The German Chancellor, Mr Olaf Scholz said that he was prepared for this but that in order to move forward, financial and administrative obstacles resulting from the sector’s governance issues needed to be addressed.

Tinubu brought up the issue of value-added processing in Nigeria’s solid minerals, agriculture, automotive industry, and other job-generating sectors to the German leader’s notice.

Sir Alex Ferguson perfectly summed up the Cristiano Ronaldo vs Lionel Messi debate

By Jake Polden

The Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo debate is as old as time.

Nine times out of 10, it sees someone with a connection to either Manchester United, Real Madrid or Juventus - and now Saudi side Al Nassr - naming Ronaldo. On the other hand, someone with a connection to Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain or Inter Miami would likely name Messi.

Former Barcelona stars Gary Lineker and Ronaldinho, for example, are very much in the Messi camp, and have previously sang the the World Cup winner's praises in the press. "He's just phenomenal," Lineker told talkSPORT. "He's 31 now and he's still going strong. He plays the game in a way the rest of us are not familiar with.

"I watch a lot of football, and people pine on this whole Messi vs Ronaldo debate; there's no comparison for me. Messi is on a different level to everybody else, it's as simple as that.

"People say to me what about Ronaldo's goalscoring record and so forth? But I say to them have you seen Messi pass a football? Have you seen him dribble towards goal?"

Ronaldinho, meanwhile, said, via Goal: "Messi. I would have loved to continue playing alongside him. I didn't get enough time with him, he was very young. I'd love to take to the pitch with him one more time."

La Liga president Javier Tebas has also previously heaped praise on the Argentine, telling Omnisport: "Messi is part of Barcelona and he will stay there. We consider him part of La Liga and he transcends what a normal player is.

Get involved! Who's the greatest - Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi? Give us your pick in the comments section.

"For us he is a La Liga icon, the most important footballer at a global level who has played in our competition, he's above everyone. I'm a Real Madrid fan but not recognising Messi is going to be the best player in history is not knowing football."

Ex-Chelsea midfielder and manager Frank Lampard, who has no connection to either player, was initially a Messi fan but told The Overlap in 2021: "I actually think for Ronaldo's output and actual numbers, and goals in big finals and semi-finals like we've seen, I think I maybe give him the edge. That's going to start a load of hate, now!"

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are now on the tail end of their careers

Those who also consider Ronaldo to be the better player include his former Real Madrid team-mate Mesut Ozil, who revealed his stance on Twitter a few years ago. Former Manchester United stars Roy Keane and Michael Owen have also picked Ronaldo over Messi in the past, with the latter declaring on BT Sport: "Goalscoring is the hardest art in football and [Ronaldo] makes it look so easy - head, left foot, right foot.

"Messi is a decent header of a ball but if you're looking at all-round players, you go head-to-head with Messi and Ronaldo, you'd say Ronaldo has a lot more different attributes let's say. He's probably always been quicker, right foot, left foot and header of a ball. I think Messi is outstanding in certain attributes but as an all-round physique, Ronaldo is such an all-round player."

Sir Alex Ferguson obviously has a strong link to Ronaldo, given that he was arguably the greatest player to ply his trade under the Scot. But when the legendary United boss, who guided the Portuguese to his first of five Ballon d'Or wins, was asked by 1991 world snooker champion John Parrott to pick between the duo back in 2015, he provided the perfect response.

"People say who is the best player in the world? And plenty of people quite rightly say Messi - you can't dispute that opinion," explained Ferguson. "But Ronaldo could play for Millwall, Queens Park Rangers, Doncaster Rovers… Anyone, and score a hat-trick in a game.

"I'm not sure Messi could do it. Ronaldo's got two feet, he's quick, great in the air, he's brave - Messi's brave, of course. I think Messi's a Barcelona player."
